GoG.com has announced a big half-off sale on a bunch of older Interplay titles, allowing you to pick up some titles of serious quality for just a couple bucks apiece. There are some real gems in there, including the Descent games, the classic Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics, and the great Sacrifice, all for just $2.99 each.
We'd be remiss as well if we didn't point out that the much-loved space combat game Freespace is also on sale, along with its sequel, for the same ludicrously low prices. Three bucks for a bunch of must-play titles from video gaming's days of yore? Deals don't get much better than that, people.

I just started playing the original Independence War - and wow it's cutting edge stuff, it mostly just made me want to play Freespace 2 and its various mods.

Umm... did you even play Freespace? Even a little? No, didn't think so. Maybe wikipedia it? No? Hrm... It shows.
From wikipedia: "In the single-player mode, the player flies through a series of missions in a campaign."
It's a space combat simulator a la Wing Commander, X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Starlancer. It is most certainly NOT a "space trading and exploration game."

I think the bigger story here is you can have the three original Fallout titles, DRM free, for under a ten spot. Fallout is still relevant, after all.

i got the bloody mess perk in every single fallout for that very reason. it's just so satisfying when you shred a raider in half with an smg and you see his rib cage and all that shit.

Aww and I bought my dad the Fallout Trilogy from Target just the other day. Oh well. Roughly the same price, I suppose.

Definitely buy Freespace 2. I got it from GOG a while back at their full price and it was worth it times ten.

You can play Freespace 1 through the Freespace 2 SCP with enhanced graphics and missions. I recently went through it, it was awesome to relieve the original's campaign but in HD with the new engine.

@Matrixxxx Go here http://www.fsoinstaller.com/ and get the Freespace Open Installer. Run it after you've installed Freespace 2, and select everything. It will download many gigs of data, and then you will have HD graphics, Freespace 1 missions, as well as a dozen or so other mission packs.

I loved Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Are Fallout 1 and 2 recommended? I'm not a huge fan of old-school turn-based RPGs, but I do love the Fallout universe. For this price, I am very tempted, but not 100% sure yet. Thoughts?

@ajbrown141 I'm not sure what you think of "turn-based RPGs" or what you're using as a basis. If, for example, you're using systems that generally devolve into "Attack>Basic Attack>End Turn> Opponent's Turn>Attack>Basic Attack" ad nauseum, it's not that. The games are on a hex grid, and it plays a lot more like a tactical strategy game.

@Rather Dashing Thanks, I hadn't realised that. I thought the combat was more like Final Fantasy, which generally bores me. I enjoy tactical strategy games, so think I'll pick this up.

That's a steal for both Freespace games, although they are not "exploration and trading" games. They are combat sims, through and through. And they are wonderful.
For those who download these, you'll have some graphical glitches on newer PCs. They can be fixed with some *very* simple registry edits as found here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/fs1-technical.html

Argh. I'd grab Freespace 2 in a heartbeat, based on a friend's recommendation, but they don't accept American Express. and those are the only gift cards I have right now

Isn't Freespace 1 and 2 freeware now along with the HD mods that some group made?

oh snap, Freespace 1 & 2. I can get on board with that. Fantastic games they were

Seeing this just makes me wonder where is an HD Freespace update at? Or heaven forbid a Freespace 3?!
If graphic adventure games and fighting games can make a comeback why can't space-combat games? (Goes to pout in a corner)

I know it maybe sacrilegious but I kinda meant a release/reboot for consoles since that's where I do the majority of my gaming now. I've played all the space combat games for 360 and they are "lacking" to put it nicely. Although I would go out and buy a joystick for the PC if the right game came around...
