why? why do we or they need this isn't it bad enough I have to star at beef jerky and Nike ads on the dashboard to find new content and what not why the hell would anyone want to interact with them

Are you sure you wouldn't like interacting with the women in AXE commercials? Throwing chopped wood with the woodchucks from GEICO? Or even "rollin' dirty" with hamsters in a KIA ad?

Sarcasm aside, this is starting to remind me of that FUTURAMA episode("A Fishful of Dollars")with the ads placed in society's dreams, in addition to every day life.
"Of course, but never in our dreams. We had it on milk cartons, magazines, TV, shoes, buses, benches, in the sky, on buildings, on planes... But *never* in our dreams!" -Fry

All the seasons (besides the new one being aired on Comedy Central) are on Netflix for Instant Watch. Every time I sit down to eat I watch a couple episdoes. Depending on how much I eat. And I eat a lot.

Or, you know, how about I'm a gold subscriber and they just take all of that stupid shit off the dashboard period because I'm already paying for their premium service?

@nembutals Get over it. Ads are a part of life and you're never going to get rid of them. You pay for cable and it has ads. You pay for games and they have ads. Your taxes pay for roads and they have billboards all over the place.

Actually, I agree with his OPINION. It's obnoxious to pay for a premium service to then be inundated with ads - much less, inundated with ads that listen and watch us. I don't like this at all.

Yeah, but many of us see the Nintendo system as being pretty weak on a lot of other points. Fanboys need to find their arguments to try to win the "console war" though...I guess.

Don't even try to use logic with people that just want to bitch about something they have no power over.

They could always stop watching TV, movies, and games with ads in them (which is most of that content) out of protest but some how I think they won't.

I do have power over it, I sold my 360 ages ago. You want me to pay for a service then inundate that service with ads, then I stop paying for that service. Simple and effective.

while i agree with your point of view to an extent (not too fond of ads), but that just goes to show how lazy we are. is it so hard to just, you know, scroll through the ads? maybe they are annoying, but it's not like you ever have to click on them to get to where you're trying to get to on the 360.

still, it would be great it they took them off the dashboard, at LEAST for us gold members who dole out $50 year after year for an online service to play games like rainbow six that have in-game billboards with real advertisements. then again, it is microsoft. they're in the business of making money, and business is still pretty damn good.

Yeah I can see it now..

Kinect: I see that your daughter is 13 years old. Have you considered buying her condoms in case she's gets busy?
Father: Excuse me? My daughter is an angel.
Kinect: Perhaps you should view these photos that I took last night while you were out with your wife
Kinect:
Father: WTF?
Daughter: Daddy, it's not what you think!
Kinect: Can I also interest you in a good divorce lawyer as I have some other photos of your wife....

Hmmm Kinect can come out with a program called "Eye Spy!" and parents can install it on the HDD and have it named something lame like "Classic Solitare" so the kids don't load it up.

Are you hearing this Microsoft? Of course you are, because you are watching me right now....

If by "Kinect functionality" they mean "use a swiping gesture to move those ads off my Goddamned screen", then by all means yes!

I just want to play my games, Microsoft. I know you're not a charity and that you have strategic partnerships with other companies and yadda yadda but sometimes I just want to turn my system on and not be bombarded by Doritos commercials. Is that so wrong?

Buy a Nintendo.

It's like someone that bought an iPhone and saying "I just want to make phone calls".

Nintendo = Gaming console
Xbox = Media hub

#1) I'm glad I don't use twitter.

#2) I can see the potential dangers of someone being misquoted, which could set off a lot of legal red flags against Microsoft. Possibly even libel suits.

#3) I hate advertisers. we know what your products are. If we want to buy your stuff, we'll just go to the store. any more intervention is overkill.

No not really. Just because a soda maker stops advertising doesnt mean you stop drinking soda. Cigarettes are still a billion dollar industry despite being relegated to billboards and the back of magazines. If you need or want something you're still going to end up getting it whether big brother tells you to get it or not.

yes, of course. but remember that video games--and their news sites--were alive and well before joystiq and before the online advertisers bombarding us with ads. So I don't believe in any dependency on the "overkill" of ads for video games. Personally, I think it's the contrary.

but such is today's world...

What are you even talking about? He's saying that this website that you are staring at right now - JOYSTIQ - would probably not be here because it NEEDS advertisements in order to sustain the costs that come with a staff and site management.

I think he was referring to a product's ability to withstand profitable existence.

For example... In the case of cigarettes & other tobacco products, it *was* in all kinds of advertising until the recent decades. So, technically, it's an established product that is only seeing(slight)decline lately due to loss of mainstream media advertising.

If it was a newer product, especially that of electronics, advertising on TV and print is huge for initial sales.

I must have missed the terrifying part. What's so bad about this again? I've watched the video demonstration, and you only interact with the ads, if you opt to. It's kinda like internet ads, you know, click on an ad to find out more, or hover over it to see the video, etc.

@ansalon929 The ads on 360 aren't bad, and aren't anything like the types of ads you can get surfing the web. They're easy to ignore. IF ads on the net were setup the same way, I'm guessing alot of people now wouldn't even bother to install ad-blockers.

Now if MS starts pulling the same kind of ad shit that alot of websites do, then I'd get pissed but this story doesn't indicate they're moving in that direction.

I don't see how the ads are NOT intrusive. If I were to start my 360 right now, the first thing I will see is an ad. Not my game, not my profile, not the ability to START the game... an ad.
This is despite my disabling the welcome screen, setting my account to auto-login and auto-start the disc. Doesn't matter, it will always be an ad.

@Peffse Yes, the first place you end up on, in the dash, is the Spotlight section, but if I remember correctly, the first tile has never been an ad. It's usually some dlc, or something like that. It's not had to push up once to get My Xbox section and the play disc tile.

Now I don't have the auto-run disc option enabled, but I believe if you had a game in the console, the game will launch and not the dash, during start up.

Also, if you guys have taken a look at the video demonstration, they're using the newer dash. The Home screen, has the play game/disc icon right there. So, if this new dash is a replacement for the current dash and Kinect Hub, you won't even have to push up to play the game in your drive.
