LA Noire arriving on PC this fall, with 3D support and improved graphics
74
After Red Dead Redemption failed to make an appearance on PCs, computerologists may have worried that Rockstar had abandoned the platform entirely, in favor of totally wimpy consoles. But the publisher just announced that Team Bondi's L.A. Noire "will be arriving this fall for the PC" with porting being handled by Grand Theft Auto Stories-developer Rockstar Leeds.
Okay, so Rockstar hasn't abandoned the platform, but what about the performance issues that plagued the initial PC release of Grand Theft Auto IV? The press release promises that not only will the PC release feature 3D support and "improved graphical enhancements" but it will "run on a wide range of PCs" – naturally, we'll wait until its release, when PC gamers will inevitably assault the game with every hardware permutation imaginable while clinically taking frame rate readings every 15 seconds.
L.A. Noire will find its way to PCs this fall, in both retail and digital formats.

Is there any indication that the Playstation 3 might get a 3D Update?

@Dravize a game as big as LA Noire may not be able to get a simple 3D patch like Super Stardust HD did....I imagine it would be a rather large patch....

Technically they dont have to "add" 3d support as all PC games can already be played in 3d via the driver. It would be more difficult to do for a console game. I dont know why they think they have to tell people it supports 3d on PC, the people who use 3d on PC already know that every game can be played in 3d with or without official support.

3D cuts the framerate in half, would you want to play the game at 15 frames per second?

Cool. The more people that get to play this great game the better. It'll be interesting to see what the modding community is capable of doing with this game.

The only thing that really needs to be improved is the NPC driving AI. Making a simple left hand turn at an intersection is an adventure every time.
Maybe a bit more clarification in the questioning too.
"Ok, this guy was clearly in the area of the crime, he must have heard something, and is holding back"
*chooses lie*
Cole "Know what? I'm thinking you for this crime. Give it up! Where's the knife?"
"FFFFFFFFFF"
Other than that, great game.

Of course I had been waiting to see if LA Noire was going to get a PC version before I bought it.
After seeing the Red Dead Redemption rumors come and go though, I decided last week that Rockstar didn't care any more so I'd go ahead and get the PS3 version.
And now this.
Crap.

@MEGATOOL It is. Consoles suck, they're based on ancient hardware, and they have proprietary standards for accessories that mean an incredible dearth of choice and horrendous pricing for simple things like controllers and headsets. Consoles suck.

Um, PS3 hardware won't be getting any better either.
Recently I built a £400 PC for a friend, just £150 more than a PS3. But it's already slightly more powerful than a PS3. It's futureproof as much as a PS3 in that it runs games at 720-1080p on medium graphics and future titles will also look the same on it, they'll just have much higher max setting options.
£150 would be made back very quickly through lower game costs, no online fees at all (other than M.M.O.), plus if my friend decides on monetizing his PC he easily could with no problems.
I like consoles but I find the reasons that people use to compare PC and consoles to be quite stupid.

Every game? That's true. You'll get a few hundred games on that PS3 in its whole life time.
In that PC's lifetime you'll get countless. Literally uncountable figures of free, paid, indie, AAA, browser, social games. But for a PS3 you get 5-8 years of being able to play games on locked hardware with absolutely no guarantee at all that your game investments will play when Sony do decide to upgrade their hardware.
Again. Some people have such stupid reasons for loving consoles.
And I've never had to mess around with drivers either. Windows and Mac updaters takes care of everything automatically, haven't you heard? Well... Windows does with a 3rd party app. Since 2005 I haven't manually installed any driver, or if I have it was so easy and painless that I can't remember it.

The thing I find most annoying about PC gamers is that they seem to think that graphics > gameplay. I find that baffling. The fact that they boast about having higher tech & things of that nature when in the end, we're still playing the same damn game. I don't see why spending $150+ for better graphics & a faster frame rate is something to boast about. I can play games on a 25 inch dinosaur with composite cables & I'm pretty sure I'll still be playing the same game as you.
The way I see it PC gamers care more about how the game looks than how it plays.

"Try building a gaming PC that can match the graphics of a PS3 for the same price and can be futureproof to even match the graphics of the PS3 three years from now.
Operating System, Case, Optical Drives, keyboard and mouse must be new and included in the $299 budget. No reused or recycled parts."
Sure, as soon as you show me a PS3 that will surf the web properly, run office, rip and encode video and music files in a format of my choice, runs Photoshop, lets me output higher than 1080p, lets me upgrade the CPU and graphics power, supports keyboards and mice in games, supports a simple USB wireless headset (no red-white stereo cables), can scan, print, email, encrypt my data, turn into a home media server, etc.
Apples to oranges, friend.
My gaming PC actually cost me less than my consoles over the same period of time once you include the price of games and accessories.
Not to mention the freedom of an unlocked architecture.
Cheers,
ST

Yeah right, thats why nintendo had to create a console that had BETTER GRAPHICS, because those are not necessary right??? and that´s why the next Xbox is going to have 3,000 times better graphics than the 360, because people doesn´t care for visuals .......sure, if that were real we´d still be playing with the atari 2600........pure gameplay, only squares.

Uhh why does the operating system, keyboard and hard drive have to be new?
I can see the argument for having a new hard drive if you don't have one already, but why pay $100 for a new operating system and $20 for a new keyboard? I mean the one you are typing this on should suffice no?

By doing that, however, you're purposefully taking out one of the PC's inherent advantages: Hardware can be tweaked, exchanged and recycled at will. Why say "oh, that doesn't count?" Just because it makes your argument easier?
What you're essentially saying is "A Ferrarri is the same as a Ford Focus. Just take out the Ferrarri's engine and replace it with one comparable to that of the Focus's for simplicity. You will see they are the same". Yes, you're technically correct but you're providing a flawed argument in doing so.

excuse me?? you enjoyed a game with BAD FRAME RATE??? i think that´s the ONLY thing that you can´t enjoy, i played and enjoyed half life 1 it was awesome even though it´s not a graphic fest anymore, i loved san andreas even though the game is no longer top notch, but i always had good frame rates with both games ( excelent frame rates to be honest as both are pretty easy to run for a modern p.c.). A game that coughs and shakes during gameplay can´t be enjoyed buddy, that´s impossible, that´s one of the FIRST things that any company is always getting better, frame rates...... and not to mention that´s also another reason why we keep seeing brand new consoles, because the next one is going to move soooooo smooth that you can hear barry white singing on the background..... at least that´s what they are going to say......

You're right, but it seems you forget graphics is not the only reason a company releases a new console. Gameplay is also favored with new consoles, because they bring new controllers (there're always accesories that can do that, too, but they don't make it as good).

Even though i agree with you 100% that a stor line is the MUST important thing on a game it´s impossible to think that something as technical and as important as a framerate that can create or break a game is not important. i think that´s the must important thing on a game, a bad frame rate can make a game completely unplayable, just look at what rockstar did with GTAIV when it was released for the p.c. with a terrible framerate.

But you see here's where you get it twisted. You keep talking about the actual games themselves while I'm talking about your PC setup. The developers make the game as it is & it can be played on a console or PC. What I'm saying is that PC gamers keep boasting that PC is better than consoles because of the higher resolution textures that can be seen on the PC & not on consoles. I never said pushing the graphical bar was bad but when comparing a console game to PC that's all there really is to compare. Besides the trivial arguments of the community & the difference between mouse + keyboard & a controller.
If I buy BF3 for the console & you buy it for PC, you're only getting better & smoother graphics. It's not like DICE is going to shit all over the console version because that would be bad business. You don't seem to understand that boast about better graphics is just as silly as boasting about a new 3D TV. Sure it looks nice but really, it's about the content you get & not the coat of paint it has.

Not a fan of pc gamers Chris? Most of us play game consoles too you know :P.
Glad to hear that this will be getting a pc release. I for one will be purchasing it near day one just to show support. I used to love my 360 but with all the intrusive ads and social this and that, netflix and a plethora of other services I won't use being the focus of the console, I have switched to primarily pc.
If you know what you're doing and don't mind "fiddling" with settings, pc is generally a better experience IMO. I will be playing this game with a 360 pad on my tv so it will pretty much be the same as console anyways. Can't wait!

They're porting this and not RDR because it sold less well and they want to make more of their investment back. RDR sold so well they don't care about PC.
I want RDR, I couldn't give a damn about LA Noire. I've seen the videos of the facial animation and was impressed, I don't need to see it in real time. If you removed the facial animation (notwithstanding how it is used in interogations) then you are left with half the experience. Shiny new graphics and technology absolutely DO impact on review scores. I also don't really enjoy point and click adventures where instead of pointing and clicking, you clumsily manoeuvre an avatar, or drive from one sterile and non-interactive environment to another.

Agreed. PC already has lots of C.S.I. type games that have similar gameplay. Maybe they are trying to get on that bandwagon because they must sell because there are a lot of them.

I also hate that movies have to now pander to the 3D making sure to have lots of shots of things moving in and out of the screen.. Reminds me of this..
