Skyrim pre-orders include a 'premium quality' map [update]

Bethesda is preparing a Skyrim pre-order bonus that will remind fans of the PC role-playing roots of the Elder Scrolls series. If you pre-order the game, you'll get ... a "feelie!" Specifically, a "premium quality world map" will be "automatically" included with your copy.

We're just going to assume that "premium quality" means "cloth." It just wouldn't be right to fully nerd out over an old-school RPG without the thrill of unfurling a limited-edition cloth map. It's getting pinned to our wall in either case, we're thoroughly ashamed to admit.

Update: Possibly in response to a certain material-obsessed blog post, Bethesda updated its own post to note that the pre-order map is "a high-grade material that has a feel similar to burlap, and will be available in North America and Europe."

I miss cloth maps, this used to be a requirement for RPGs back in the day.

Just so you guys know, Bethesda has since stated that "[t]he map is a high-grade material that has a feel similar to burlap, and will be available in North America and Europe. There will be a regular paper map included in all copies of the game, but if you want to get the premium map, we recommend pre-ordering the game."

So maps for everyone, and cloth maps with preorders. Sounds like a good deal. Luckily I already preordered my copy, cause let me tell you this: the ladies sure do like a man with a cloth map!

I've still got the creased up paper map from Oblivion on my wall, so I'd welcome a non-creased cloth map for Skyrim to go along side it. Without creases, it may even be worth framing.

Oblivion came with what looks like the same map in every copy. I have like 5 of those maps. This better be cloth. :P

@ovoon - That map is just of Skyrim. The one that came with Oblivion was of Cyrodiil. Slightly different, but still the same general area.

The site updated to say that the map will feel "like burlap". I guess that means it is probably silk cloth or something?

@BananaBoat Well yea, I know Tamriel like the back of my hand. I meant that this map looks like the same quality as the Cyrodiil map, but instead of pre ordering that one you got it with every copy. This time however it looks like your right with cloth, so its all good.

@BananaBoat no burlap isn't like silk...quite the opposite actually. ever do any potato sack races as a kid? that was a burlap bag, commonly used for animal feed such as cracked corn, ground mash and pellets. I'm hoping it will be a finer weave than a feed bag.

@WarriorDyke - I know what burlap is. I just don't know of any companies that actually print on material like that. Well, I guess I have bought bags of rice in burlap sacks with printed logos on them, but I digress.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if it actually is a material like burlap.

@kentuckyfried - If burlap-esque material cost 1 cent a piece, something like silk cloth would cost half a cent.

I digress though. It wouldn't be much of a pre-order bonus if they used the cheapest material they could find, I guess.

Cloth would be better. I only looked at the paper map my Oblivion came with maybe once or twice. So does this mean no super duper special collectors edition?

I'll only get it if it reveals a secret code when you dunk it in water.

Nope, but it DOES reveal the secrets of the Dragonborn when held dangerously close to fire.

That's ok, I'm fine with hitting a button to see the map.

Same here. This will probably go with the rest of the tat I have now that's cluttering up my desk. Fun for about a minute and then never used again.

Roll out a big map over your keyboard or just hit the M key so you can fast travel to map locations? Hmmmm?

I'd rather have digital pre-order bonuses that are gameplay related.

Still waiting on word of a Collector's Edition.

I really hate that we live in a time where physical pre-order bonuses are a big thing.Seems like thats the selling point of most "premium" editions of games now and the standard priced versions just get some form of DLC which the company can include at little cost to them.

I still have my box with my old physical pre-order stuff in it and it still feels pretty cool to open it from time to time and remember the excitement of picking up that game i had been looking forward to forever.

So we got a free map with Morrowind, a free map with Oblivion and now we have to get the pre-order to get one? What next it only comes in the collectors edition?

If there is not something special about this map it seems very odd.

I'll be pre-ordering anyway but not liking the way this is going.

@KillerC - According to the linked site, every copy will have a paper map. To get the cloth map, you'll have to pre-order though.

The last time I moved, I think I finally lost my Ultima Online map, which is a shame, as it was awesome! I miss all the stuff that regular PC games used to come with.

Dear Bethesda, could I please have two cloth maps? I need two because I will surely drool all over the first one I get my grubby little paws on.

Kind of a boring bonus. I have a Ferelden map myself, but for it to be the bonus sounds...cheap. Cmon, we can't get a plastic shield? Little dragon? I like dazzling bonuses. It makes the wait easier.

Considering every single primary Elder Scrolls game came with a map (and all the Morrowind Expansions), this really isn't surprising but it totally is entirely welcome!

I will not jerk off or have sex until this game is released. On release date, my whole neighborhood will be swimming in a sea of cum. I will use this cloth map to wipe their tears away.
