The only winning move is not to remake.

@Gibbeynator Unfortunately I agree. It would be nice if it was possible to make a great remake though.

@pandaSmore

The middle part of the story will have to change a lot since computers and the internet have gotten a lot more complicated since that movie.

This would be interesting, but not if it turns into a comedy.

remakes, wether in game form or movie form are a cheap way of not having an orignal idea... that... or they they simply wanna get some quick $$$ with the nostalgia factor.

@PR0F3TA

Some remakes (or TV adaptations) are due to the fact that the kids/teens who watched the original movies are now in charge of green lighting a remake. They loved them so much growing up that they want to update them for their own kids.

And it's not that there aren't original ideas in Hollywood. There are (in script form). It's just near impossible to get them made because the execs are afraid to take a chance. A bomb could cost them their job. They go with what's safe. If the audiences stop seeing remakes and sequels, then Hollywood will make more original material.

It was difficult to get "Inception" off the ground and this was from a proven director. It was only after the success of Batman that allowed Christopher Nolan the ability to make it. Most execs didn't even understand the script (even though I think Nolan dumbed it down quite a bit for a wider audience).

@Meekermoloko

you spoke alot of truth there. but one line i can't agree on...

"They loved them so much growing up that they want to update them for their own kids."

or maybe i just have a hard time understanding that as logical.

@PR0F3TA, Obviously you've never seen Fanfiction then...these people just have the money to do something with it.

@Meekermoloko, I'd have to disagree with you in saying that Hollywood doesn't want to take risks. Hollywood does lack any creative ability, further more they are willing to shell out hundreds of millions of dollars on projects that could flop, ($300 budget on Green Lantern, you can't tell me that isn't a massive risk).

Meanwhile you do have Indie movies that are released (so many of them limited sadly) that are willing to take risks in creating a well crafted film for a fraction of the cost, which if properly advertised could easily rack in massive profits due to low budget. As an example I'll use the trailer for the upcoming movie Another Earth. The concept behind the movie is relatively simple, but it's not something you would ever see Hollywood trying to attempt.

I do think that remakes do have a viable, if limited, place. There are plenty of examples of poor/decent movies with a good idea being made into a great movie many years later. Two that come to mind where I find the remake far more enjoyable are The Thing and Ocean's Eleven.

That said, I agree in general that most remakes are bad ideas.

Unless they manage to make it a period film, no thanks. A contemporary reboot set in the present day or near future would be boring. A lot of what makes the original so fun is the technology of the day and the cold war tensions.

@Epoque At the same time.. The Cold War means nothing to us non US.. and possibly the younger generation of US & Russians..

....It would probably be Korea, Iran & Pakistan to be the modern day equivilent..

Speak for yourself. I'm a 'non US' and the Cold War was still a big part of my growing up, not in the least because of cinema.

The semi-sequel direct to DVD, War Games 2: The Dead Code, wasn't half bad ... I was expecting it to be a lot worse. So, if this remake is better than that, I'll go see it.

What made the original so fantastic wasn't just WOPR, or the geekdom of the hack, or even seeing an arcade in it's prime. Seeing this kid WORK to hack was the best part. The hours he spent researching, hunting, and finally beating the system with period technology is what always makes for the best entertainment for me.

WTF would he do today? iPhone --> Google --> Forum Posts --> Hack.

Wasn't there already a remake just a few years ago?
It had laptops and cell phones and everything. Maybe it was a sequel, because Joshua was an antique. I can't remember.

Anyhow, to add to the list of old-school movies about computer games... "Cloak and Dagger" with Dabney Coleman and the ET kid.
I'm sure it probably sucks now, but nostalgia makes everything better!

The thing that made the original so charming (having first seen it in the 00s) is that the technology wasn't extremely fictional, or sci-fi like a load of hacker films which make computers that you wouldn't find anywhere (or at least only very high tech places), and it hasn't any of the charm.

War Games is a guy with an ordinary home PC of the time who manages to accidentally create chaos. Not sure how they could pull off the same simple charm nowadays as there are too many things available to do online, and too many firewalls over government servers, that you can't accidentally create global thermonuclear warfare.

@mrmobius

I agree with your comment, and I am not disputing anything you say, but did want to point out, when it came out WOPR was very fictional.

The computer it's based on, the BRGR (yes, they changed the name, and used another burger name) actually existed, but it did not have the ability or control that's shown in the movie. Analyze things, create strategy? Yes. Have AI, and take direct control of missles? No.

When I first saw the headline I though OMG Peter Jackson is going to make WarGames... that's crazy! Sadly it wasn't that crazy.

This could either end really great or horribly. WarGames is a classic and those are tough to mess with. Above all the story would need to remain intelligent first and all tech wizbangy second.

If you want to draw inspiration from Wargames, and make a movie exploring some of the themes in a different way, go for it. But that's just not a movie that needs a "remake" or a "reboot."

N. O.

WarGames 2: The Dead Code was bad enough.

WarGames still holds the record of "most times I ever saw a single movie in a theater"

IMO, this would be the equivalent of Uwe Boll remaking the Godfather Trilogy.
