One example features a Toyota commercial which prompts users to say "Xbox near me" for directions to the nearest dealership (powered by Bing maps, of course). Our question: What happens when a PlayStation ad pops up?
Kinect-enabled TV ads demonstrated on video

Remember the terrifying future we imagined when Microsoft explained its dream of Kinect-enabled advertising? There's no need to imagine anymore, as Microsoft's demonstration has been caught on video. The footage showcases functions like television scheduling and finding local retailers, all of which is tied to responding vocally to television commercials.
One example features a Toyota commercial which prompts users to say "Xbox near me" for directions to the nearest dealership (powered by Bing maps, of course). Our question: What happens when a PlayStation ad pops up?

When a playstation ad comes on the 360 become enraged and kill all life on earth.... Or it won't do anything. It's one of those two options.

Asking too much of motion controls, aren't we?

@Lnds500 you know those "Better with Kinect" games...it occurred to me that Rock Band would be better with Kinect, not to use it to play exactly, but to speak the artist/song name that I want to play. It may sound weird to some, but even using the built in shortcuts can take a while to navigate through the songs I've accumulated. Wouldn't it be great to say, play "Seven Nation Army" and jump right to it?

@Fullmetal Salchemist I don't remember the name of the shooter they showcased at E3. It was very impressive, but who's gonna crouch closing and reopening his palm like a nutcase for hours??? Shooters could take advantage of voice capabilities or gestures in stealth missions. Who in here has not started shouting at the screen at some point something like "cover me you idiot!!" to one of out AI teammates. Now that would be cool! And in stealth operations, we could signal towards the direction we would like are teammates to go. Is that so hard to implement?

And yet, it's still simpler to push a button for all of this, instead of some short and annoying motion controlled quick-time event.
But seriously, Kinect-ads only work on Xbox. And who the hell use their Xbox to watch ads? Are they giving us a whole new section on the dashboard for ads? "Watch the new time-exclusive Kinect-enabled ad for Toyota only on Xbox 360, this summer!"

@Digital Viking "This is the new trailer for Toy Story 5! Say "Xbox 150 dollars" loud to get directions to the cinema, because you have no clue where it is!"
The next trailer you watch say "You still don't know! Call my name, bitch!"

@Digital Viking is it less simple to use voice? Like the example? Or are you too lazy to open your mouth?

No it's because people like him don't want to see technology develop & would rather be in the stone age than hear about a feature that would only be relevant to him if 1) he has a Kinect & 2) he even decides to get the TV service that the 360 will have. Because it's more fun to complain about different options right?

I'm looking foward to the day when I don't like digging for the remote when I want to control the TV. This is particularly annoying if muliple people use the same TV, the remote never stays put.
Anyway, I welcome my future TV with voice control because I choose the laziness of using my voice only over the laziness of finding then aiming a plastic IR blaster. Moving my eyes down to look at the remote buttons wears me out...

So in the near future we will be able to conntect with a Kinect-enabled toaster. All we would have to do is say to it "Xbox buy more bread" and wha-la we'd be reminded to buy more bread while fixing breakfast.

Actually, if I could say "Toaster, give me toast!" to a toaster, and it would respond correctly by giving me a toast right after, then I would not complain.
It wouldn't need camera though, just any old non-revolutionary microphone would do.
Would still be easier to just push a button though, but toast is toast! I bet Kinect would be cooler and more useful if it gave me food I could eat, not only the ads for it.

Well see when I ask for toast from my Toaster, it asked me for bread in return. Sorta an even trade.
But damn dude that is a pretty sweet toaster you have if it can give you toast out right. Where you get it from?

Anyone else find it ironic that Microsoft is demoing an Xbox360 technology on a Sony TV..?
Posted: Jun 28th 2011 4:25AM (Unverified) said
@Dehnus Oh sure, but they couldn't at least go out and buy a Samsung? An LG? At the very least a VIZIO? ;) If I were in the marketing or 'corporate watchdog' group at MS, I'd be pretty unhappy if one of their groups was demoing tech with a competitor's equipment. ;)

They could have used a different TV brand, like Samsung, LG, Panasonic, etc. Sony is their arch rival, and there are plenty of alternative TVs.

It's about as ironic as developers making Sony Playstation games on Microsoft Windows.
Or Sony using Windows as the OS for the laptops they sell.
They don't fight in every corner.

@tendoboy1984 Christ, Sony and Microsoft aren't like Harry Potter and Voldemort you know, they're just competitors in a specific business.
You guys must have went mental when Sony started producing laptops with Microsoft OS way back.

Is whole different scenario.
SOE games are not ADVERTISED(read: showing to the public) that they are running on a Windows PC, like double-clicking on the game icon to lunch the game or something similar. Is implicit, but never is shown or advertised among Windows.
The same goes for Vaio Laptops. They are never shown promoting Windows, neither they are shown navigating through any Windows OS in their advertisements. By default, we know they run Windows OS, but they never explicitly show that You got it?
In this ad, they explicitly show a Sony TV, when they could grab another brand like Samsung or Toshiba. They EXPLICITLY are showing a competitor's brand in an advertisement for a product rivaling with another Sony product (Playstation, Playstation Move).

Um, Sony's computer division and Microsoft are famous for getting along. If you go to Sony's website, go to the VAIO laptop section, for instance, you'll see clearly in the upper-right corner "Sony recommends Windows 7".
Sony sells Microsoft software and Microsoft sells Sony computers (at the Microsoft store.) Although Sony and Microsoft compete very visibly in the game console market, for these very big corporations business is business.
Unlike fanboys, Sony and Microsoft don't give a darn that it uses each other's equipment and software in selling their (non-console) products.

This feature would not blanket ALL ads on your TV,. Brands/ad agencies would have to purchase this add-on before releasing their ad. The Microsoft partner would most probably not allow a Playstation ad to be tagged in this way. Not only that, but Sony would not want potential Playstaion buyers to utilize one of the key Xbox features as a way to sell something the Playstation does not offer (yet?).
