Deadly Premonition director wants to make a new game, just can't afford it
50
Swery65, the director of last year's Deadly Premonition, has taken to the Internet in a new blog posting asking for support for a brand new title. He says that his team at Access Games is itching to start a new project, but game design takes more than just dreams and ideas -- apparently it takes time and money as well. And since time is money, he basically just needs money.
"I want to make a new game," he wrote. "As much as I want, but that alone is not enough to start the process. Would anyone be ready to invest in us?" Swery doesn't say anything about what kind of game he plans to make, but does promise that he'll "work until it kills me," and that the team will definitely "make something good."
Any big-time investors out there willing to call his bluff? It seems like, despite the mixed reception for Deadly Premonition around the world, Swery shouldn't have too much trouble finding a publisher sooner or later. Even if not, there's always Kickstarter, right?

If the sequel to Alan Wake ever comes out ; I want it to follow the same design of the open world and the style of the great characters and story DP had..without the bad graphics and tedious controls of course ... If anyone played DP and AW he would understand what I mean ...DP was a great concept but very very rough around the edges but I've enjoyed it because of the very good story

omg yes!!!! thats exactly what i thought when i was playing alan wake and deadly premenition, i loved dp more than alan wake simply because it was open world and u could do more things and reminded me of la noire :D

@thekinslayer Right ..... don't get me wrong I love AW, but I wanted more from it , especially regarding interactions with other characters and side quests ... an open world will work like a charm in it

@solidsnake8282 Alan Wake was originally designed to be an open world game, but it was scrapped late in the dev process because players might ruin story pacing by doing things out of character. Might be true but hey, I'm gonna pick up this game now based on the buzz here. I loved Alan Wake and there doesn't seem to be too muck like it out there.

-i was playing this up until LA Noire released, now i'm playing Shadows of the Damned, I will come back to this game, Despite it's flaws, which mind you, there are Many!, It could have been a great game, but I think these guys did not have the proper funding/time to create the game this could have been!, there is alot of great ideas going on in the game, but when your on a budget, i guess they had to make do with what they had.

i would love for them to make a new game, i love deadly premonition, i hope they can make the new game,i know a lot of people might of not liked it by the graphics and all but i think to have a great game isnt about the graphics but the gameplay and the storyline ,for $20 dollars, is a great price for a game like that :D my luck goes to the company i hope u can make a new game!! ^-^

DLC games or iphone games. Try those first. I hate that people with a dream and passion are made subservient to steep "next gen" dev costs. Publishers and Console manufacturers need to look at new ways to stimulate growth in industry.

These guys, with the proper funding and support, could make make something really big. There's a ton of great ideas on Deadly Premonition that just come short in execution... most likely because of budget limitations.

They should try and get something for XBLA and PSN, it'd take a fair amount less production cost and in theory they could take more of the cut when selling the games.

I bought Deadly Premonition the day that it came out. It was $20 brand new and I have to say that it would have been worth buying at twice the price. That game had more heart than just about any other game released this generation. Granted, the controls were a little stiff, the driving bits were horrendous, and the graphics were very dated, but the story, atmosphere, characters, and music more than made up for those flaws. On top of that, the game was only $20 when it came out! That's unheard, even for other games in the super-niche category. Every time I tried to tell people about it, they would just brush it off by saying it wasn't "Next-Gen" and instead go for Halo, Gears of War, or Call of Duty. It's a damn shame that that game never got better exposure. Here's hoping he gets his new game off the ground, that the publisher actually takes the time to market the game properly, and that people are a little more open minded about it.

Congratulations, you can play this on the PS3! It was released in Asia on the PS3, but no publisher was interested in a PS3 release in other territories. The PS3 release is *mostly* in English (including voice acting), but some menues and in game text are in Japanese. I've heard that with a FAQ it's pretty easy to negotiate the parts that aren't English.
If a developer has made a multiplatform game, like DP, they rarely have any control on whether it actually gets released on all platforms worldwide.
So now that your sole objection has been nullified, you can gleefully give money to him and his publishers!

@Courtney so it is playable but with a FAQ, and nowadays you will find the game quadruple it's price i mean 90 dollars is more than what you would pay for a "budget" game. and it's very hard to find because it was only released in asian territories. i don't like to appear pessimistic but i love horror games but this is just so hard to obtain. i dont mind the graphics and technical issues but at the expense of what?

i was under the impression that the game exceeded sales expectations. why is he so broke.
Destructoid was the only review that understood the game. This is the type of game that was a reviewer darling after the fans decided it was good. One reason reviewers are a pathetic lot.
See God Hand for references.

I'm glad to see that so many people here like Deadly Premonition, unfortunately I got it at release and am STILL on the fence about it. I have it but never made it that far due to the godawful controls and camera. I seriously tried, three times now, but I just can't bring myself to keep playing it when I already have so many more competently designed games staring down at me from the shelf. I had the same issues with both No More Heroes games (also relative critical darlings,) and Heavy Rain.
I guess the root problem is that even though these games may have very interesting visions, gaming remains an interactive medium. When there's so many technical issues with the interactivity portion of this interactive medium (DP seriously looks and plays like a launch PS2 game,) I'd personally rather jump ship for another title that maybe has a less interesting story isn't so...busted(?) and go read some comics or something when I'm done with that.
Still, I hope this guy keeps trying.

Can we please stop calling developers by silly names like Suda51 and Swery65? If games are meant to be taken seriously, let's all be grown ups and call them by their adult names. You don't see movies being directed by "JJAbs22" or "DelToro666"

I wonder how I get in touch with him directly.....

It felt outdated, because it was in development forever, and the controls and graphics were definitely the weakest elements to the game, but the story, characters, the interaction, the atmosphere, the majority of the soundtrack, etc., was all pretty top notch. If you can get past the outdated and somewhat mediocre aspects, this is a great value at $20.

I love the parts of the game where you can just explore town and talk to people and experience the wackiness, but when the 'survival horror' action parts kick in, they just stretch on for far too long and are very repetitive with awful shooting and aiming mechanics.
Also, it would help if the game had more than like 5 songs. All of them are catchy and get suck in your head.
it's an endearing game if you stick around and let it grow on you but yeah....weird ass game.

@iceveiled 5 or 6 songs was consistent with the theme of TP, which is basically what this game was homage to.
Uniformity gives a feeling of theme and purpose and I felt it was used here as much as it was whenever the lovely Audrey Horne enters a room.

Ok, so just set up a Paypal account. I'll toss in $40 bucks. Why $40? Because Deadly Premonition only cost $20 but was way better than most other $60 games out there, so I figure I at least owe them the difference
If a bunch of other gamers with disposable income chip in like this, I think he'll have a good start.
