Most North American players haven't even seen one mission of Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten yet, as it's set to come out in the States this September. But the game came out in Japan last February, and now Nippon Ichi has announced two different downloadable scenarios coming this August and October. The first is called "The Tyrant Valdorez," and will follow that character (along with his new playable moves) through a story with follower Fenrich. And the second is "Fuuka & Desco's Chapter Begins," focusing on the side story of those two characters.
Fuuka and Desco's story will also be available either in add-on disc form, along with a collectible Desco figurine, in a special edition Disgaea 4 collection with the full game, or simply as a downloadable content pack. Note that both of these DLC packs are only announced for Japan at this point -- it's unknown whether they'll see the light of day here in the US yet.

If there is one thing NISA loves, its DLC.
They'll come here eventually.

Imagine FF Tactics style gameplay (combat wise). Then add in the ability to power up ALL items (even potions and chewing gum!!) by going "into" the item and beating random boards.
Add in a little flavor text on every single item (my favorite flavor text was on the sword called the "Bezerker"... the flavor text was "My love for you is like a truck". A Clerks reference in a JRPG? MADDNESS!
So many things to do in that game, its often hard for newcomers to wrap their brain around it in less than 100 hours. You can also steal a pirate ship from INSIDE AN ITEM and use that to pirate the item dwellers and steal more treasure.
...or you can play the regular campaign. LOL
In order of awesomeness: Disgaea 1, 3, then 2 (IMO). Rent or pick up Disgaea 1 and you'll know what this series is all about.

Also, just adding to that list.
Disgaea 3:
You can also delve straight into your own characters bodies through the help of a Prinny with an Afro, in which all the enemies are based on that characters levels, and you even have chances to fight copies of said character (which opens up the chance to duplicate items legitimately, stats and all).
And, adding to the Item World Pirates of early games, you fight them, you beat them, and then you steal their ship! This lets you raid the items Item World for booty and pillage some rare-type NPC inhabitants. That is called Reverse Pirating.
And of course, you have the Prinnies.

Explosive when even tossed about slightly, and have a penchant to punctuate their sentences with "Dood!". It may sound like they are annoying, but they are pretty much the mascot for the series, enough so they have two spin-offs which are actually pretty decent.

I always refer to the series as "stat porn". There are stats to determine the stats of your stats. Literally.
Disgaea, or pretty much any NIS game, is custom built for a limited audience, but that's why they have such rabid fan support. I don't know that any other dev today making retail, disc-based games is as unrepentant in their catering to a small niche. They're uncompromising in their adherence to number-obsessed, grind-demanding, crushingly dense anime SRPGs.
