I wonder how killstreaks will work.

Does someone get a barrel of paint dumped on them?

I thought it was another 2x XP event, not a BlizCon Style thing. I was thinking about how they are going to get any proceeds from that aha!

Clever! I see what you did there!

Actually, 100% of the proceeds (not profits!) go to the Call of Duty Endowment, which helps returning vets find work.

For the record, Chris, I 100% agree with you. I had a ton of jokes lined up about what happens when you get 6,000 of these people together in an enclosed space, but I'm tossing them out. Activision is raising close to $1M for a very important charity, and that trumps everything.

That being said, there's a pretty creepy, consistent pattern emerging. The only thing that compels you to post again and again and again in the same topic is to defend Activision from criticism.

In the last month, we have the current topic (4 posts as of now),

and this one:

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/activision-publishing-ceo-eric-hirshberg-on-true-crime-bizarre/

and this one:

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/call-of-duty-elite-preview/

The pattern is every bit as noticeable and predictable as some of the more prominent fanboy posters on this site.

What exactly happened between you and Bobby Kotick at his hotel that evening, while sharing "a glass of water"?

Something about the Activision hate really rubs me the wrong way. It's so knee-jerk and uninformed, and it's so CONSISTENT. ANY STORY ABOUT ACTIVISION gets these responses. It's gross.

It seems that the Joystiq community, (as much as I love them) can find an ideology that works for two are three cases (hating on a certain company), and try to stick with it and apply it to every other instance where the party (Activision) is mentioned.

For example, in regard the court case between West and Zampella and Activision, anytime someone mentions the possibility of the two former studio heads doing anything wrong, they're downvoted and ridiculed. Sure we can all root for West and Zampella, but we can't rule out the possibility that they may have done some rather shady things.

It's prepping non-boot strappy population of kids who instead of toiling away in video games wasting away tax money , will be preparing them as world security for the problems oil fields will be facing within the next century.

Why can't they just donate the money to charity?

I know, for the cost of putting the event + ticket sales they could have just straight up donated to the vets themselves. God knows they need all the help we can give them!!!

That's like saying, "Why do people bother with these stupid marathons for sick kids – just give the money to the kids!"

Sure, it's a great idea but people usually want something in return for their money. As is, Activision is holding a neat event for 6000+ people and, if you think of it this way, forcing them to donate $150 to charity to attend.

that doesn't make any sense. If Activision pays $1,000,000 for this thing, and only gets $600,000 in sales, then why put on the event at all? they could then donate the extra $400,000 they paid to put the event on, so the charities get $1,000,000 instead of just $600,000.

so yes, it's about promoting Activision. they get way more news with this than if they just straight donated.

@chrisgrant Because apparently I am ridiculously cynical first thing in the morning. It would appear that I wake up, look on the Internet, sneer at acts of goodwill, then forget all about it.

Although, were I in an argumentative mood, I'd point out that if Activision really gave a crap about veterans, they'd have partnered with an existing charity rather than form their own branded copy, thus freeing up the administration costs related with running such an organisation but naturally foregoing the opportunity to place 'Call of Duty' and Activision branding on all their good works...

This whole thing reminds me of that episode of Southpark where Stan's dad was trying to beat Bono out for the "World's Biggest Turd" record. Sure, theyre doing something good overall, but they parade around trumpeting about all their good will and such that it just makes them look like even bigger douchebags.

Blizzcon operates at a loss and they consider it a marketing expense, so i suppose this will be the same. The ticket revenue would likely not have covered the event, so might as well donate it to charity to get some goodwill.

Dev+Pub; hey lets gauge morons for money with this service.
Smart person; but uh oh, if we do that people will not like us except the hardcore fan who is a moron and won't see that we're ripping them off.

Very smart person; then lets donate some of the proceeds to charity! Then we can do anything and get away with it!

All; huzzah!
