Sony has revealed the PSP Engine, a middleware technology that bridges games from PlayStation Portable to the PlayStation 3 -- specifically, the titles related to Sony's "PSP Remaster" series. The company announced the technology during a session of the Games Tools & Middleware Forum 2011 this week, reports Famitsu (via Andriasang).
According to the report, PSP Engine offers some major boons in PSP-to-PS3 HD porting, including high-resolution rendering, stereoscopic 3D output, and wireless controller support for the DualShock 3. No other "Remaster" titles were announced at the event, though it seems even more likely now that we'll see other games get the same treatment as Monster Hunter Portable 3rd.
Though the PSP Remaster banner has only been announced for Japan so far, it hasn't stopped other publishers from rolling out remastered versions of other PSP games. Sony itself confirmed the God of War Origins collection during E3 this year.

I'd rather have a PS2 remaster of P3 FES and Persona 4. They had to cut a lot of the 3D gameplay and cutscenes out to cram it on a UMD....
Still, any Persona is good :D

I'm cool with having less reasons to buy PSP games.

Not sure there is much of a market for PSP games on PS3. I guess some of the JRPGs. I love my PSP but all my favorite PSP games have similar HD versions. The only exception is Killzone Liberation. That game is very unique and hasn't been done elsewhere. My only disappointment with Vita having dual sticks is that Killzone Vita will probably be a standard FPS instead of the unique game Liberation is.

How about a PS2 Engine? The fact that you STILL cannot download Playstation 2 games off the PSN, and play them on your Playstation 3 is absolutely ridiculous. Do Sony and 3rd party publishers hate making money or something? I guess they would rather people buy their games used from GameStop or eBay.

We know how you're always on the lookout for major boons, Joystiq...

I want some kind of Jeanne D'Arc extended edition. I would literally kill for that game in HD on PS3 with additional features.

I hope that happens, because from the sounds of it, Level-5 is only interested in making cell phone games aimed at children now.

I hope they do this with the Vita so I can avoid buying another handheld.

I must be the minority here. I really don't have any urge to repurchase any of the PSP games that I own. I would much rather see options for right analog stick mapping for those of use who Sync a Dual Shock 3 controller to the PSP, and the ability to Sync a Dual Shock 3 controller add-on for the PSP models that currently do not support it.

you mean there's a common platform that makes those Metal Gear Solid games look like total crap? great, now I can just look for the "PSP engine" logo and know to skip the purchase.
srsly, those games need major texture re-authoring and some basic model re-authoring if they expect people to not riot once they see it on a 50" HDTV. this is assuming they'll be using HD video and audio assets for cutscenes and music; if they don't even have that, I don't know what the point is.

does this mean we will actually get to move and look around in Monster Hunter at the same time?!

Hmm... The PSP is still relevant? Here in the US, stores barely have any games on shelves. They are just a tiny section that is overshadowed by DS, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 games.
For a system that sold 60 million units, the PSP sure gets treated like crap. The PS3 and Xbox 360 sold less, and they get more support. Logic? I thought developers wanted to male games for high-selling systems? That way they have a potentially bigger market.
Walmart hardly has any PSP games, neither does GameStop or Best Buy. Sony hardly advertises it anymore.

Really? I see lots of PSP games at my local GameStops and on gamestop.com. I recently bought Trails in the Sky, and before that Ogre Battle, Blazing Souls, Dissidia 012 and the Third Birthday. Currently playing through Ys I/II/7/Ark of Napishtim. ;-)
But as much as I like UMDs, if a PSP game is out on PSN you might as well buy it there instead of on disc, so it will transfer to the Vita.
The PSP has a great library - you should definitely check out some of the games you might have missed.

No kidding. I suppose that the "PS2 Engine" is waiting in the wings, perhaps until Sony stops selling the PS2 hardware.
On the up side, my launch model PS3 - with real hardware backward compatibility - is a continued source of happiness. ;-)
The PS3 slim still works great for PS1 games though.
