EA's posted an interview with Battlefield 3 Lead Multiplayer Designer Lars Gustavsson on the official game blog, and the key with multiplayer in the new game, he says, is that Dice wants you to have it your way. "The mindset at Dice during the development of Battlefield 2 was pretty much: 'Play the game our way, or play something else.'" he says frankly. "Now, we have made a conscious effort to reverse that mentality."
That means more modes in general, including the return of Team Deathmatch, an Infantry-only mode, and the Conquest and Rush modes that were so popular in the last iteration. Gustavsson also says that the game will incorporate "Battlelog," a social hub that's presumably similar to EA's very popular "Autolog" from the Need for Speed series.
Sounds good to us. We'll take our Deathmatch with no tomato, please.

Hey cod, noticed how their battlelog is goin to be free? Ya know, the opposite of what your elite service will do. Battlefield 3 is a day 1 buy, cod can just keeep circling the drain. Says alot when your competition wants to play your game.

@US 447 Just for the sake of say, facts, every feature announced so far (in handy list form all over the internet) for COD Elite will be free. Paid features are 100% optional and have also not been announced yet (as they will tie directly into MW3 and competitions/tournaments). Just fyi. Nice rant, though.

@Levi Yeah, they have a major inferiority complex. How about just play the games you like and quit being a dick about things you don't like? Guess that's too hard for some.

The stat-tracking features of Battlefield 3's "Battlelog" will most likely be comparable to the free version of Call of Duty's "Elite". The monthly charge is for extra features they haven't really expanded on, like clans, tournaments, daily challenges, etc.
Anyway, looking forward to Battlefield 3 and MW3. Just weird that I have to hear about BOTH of them in every post. Each game should be good on its own merits, not in comparison to the other.

@Xcrucio Its popular because its easy to play, Its something you can play for 5 minutes, or you can spend your life playing it and unlock loads of stuff. Thats what attracts poeple to it, Its what games non gamers in to it. But non gamers thinking thats what gaming is ruins other games.

Not entirely true. The original video for Elite stated at the end that "some of the features in this video will be part of the premium service" or whatever. They confirmed stat tracking and group forming will be free, that's it. Nothing about clans, theater, etc. have been confirmed to be free by Activision.

Understood, but DICE is known for this. When I got BF2 it took a good while for them to patch up all the bugs, same thing with most Battlefield games if not all. BF:BC2 was the first time that DICE introduced a community manager, someone who would listen to and pass on community complaints to the developers and also pass information from developers to the community. This was not instant but very important. Anyone who played BF:BC2 in the beginning knows of the game breaking lag and bugs I am talking about. This game looks so sweat I dream DICE will release it with minimal bugs and at least no game breaking lag.

Technically, this makes DICE the multiplayer version of Bethesda (Fallout 3 - NV). Insanely unique games with lots of steps forward... and a frickton of bugs to go along with it. Only, DICE does multiplayer, Bethesda does single player.

Gotta admit, I've been a COD fan for a while *Shields face from rotten tomatoes*. But I think I've heard enough to convince me that Battlefield 3 is the way forward, I'll still get both, but I see this becoming my primary online shooter.

How about Free For All and a "Horde" Mode? Those are the types of modes I want to see, but both seem very "not Battlefield", but if I could have it my way...

Play the game how I want to play it? Will there be mod support? Black Ops has it.

You mean Black Ops over half a year after release (soon to be 8 months), and only after the next Call of Duty is due for release, not considering the game-breaking stuttering in BO. Not saying that this game will be any better, since I'm expecting "Trusted Servers", IE, the death of the server market, and no mod tools, so they can get you to buy their next game/DLC as quick as possible.

1: Black Ops came out on November 9, 2010. It is now July 4th, 2011. The mod tools are currently in the "beta" stage, so it's almost a year now.
2: Modern Warfare 3 has been announced, hyped, has a trailer, and all the DLC for BO has been released.
3: BO has the worst optimization that I have ever seen, especially on PC. It stutters, chugs, spits, and dies. Don't even try to play Hanoi. You will blue screen.
4: Trusted Server Hosts, IE, those that pay EA the right to host servers for their games. True Dedicated Servers lets anyone with a server host, with "Trusted Servers", you can only get hosting from people EA allows. This led to several people dumping those games on their arse (BO, BF:BC2), and sent them running back to games like TF2, which had it's own self-regulated, open server market.

have they mentioned if you can team up with 8 of your friends instead of just 3 others? this is the ONLY thing that's annoyed me about battlefield. other than that it's a better game than the others all around. IMO

This. Squads are fine, I don't mind just 4 people in one, but I stopped using my headset a long time ago in BF:BC2.

Why is it everytime there is a Battlefield post, everyone has to justify not buying CoD. On topic, im deciding to pass on this game, because of how lackluster Battlefield 2 was.

For the record I am very outspoken against the Call of Duty franchise within my circle of friends, and I am in fact a big fan of Battlefield. However I do not hate the Call of Duty games or the devs/fans thereof. Nor do I feel superior to any of you because of my FPS franchise of choice. Just thought I would share my thoughts with all the hate flying between CoD and Battlefield fans. Can't we just all be one big happy FPS family?
