130? No. come on guys its a video game. 60 is great for that, but no matter how many extras you pile on, you shouldnt more than double the cost.

@Cavall At that price you'd think they'd include some or all the movies.

I'm getting confused who the hell has all this space for these towering CE's and the expendable cash to keep reaping them at day-one release.

And wow...SIX different incentives. Wait 2 months for all of it to be standard DLC (minute the tandable items unless the signed poster is just a stamp by an intern). Wait another month for the CE to go 75% off.

Heh, that's a gutsy decision on their part. I was under the impression the market for LotR games was fairly tepid at this point in time, much less for overpriced collector's edition crap.

@freaparn

Well with the Hobbit filming and all, LotR buzz is spinning around again. Plus the Blu-Ray extended editions just came out this year.

Also if you haven't noticed, its like 70 years old at this point. It's not like it's getting any less known as time goes on.

@Punkrawk Bbob

The longevity of the books has very little to do with a licensed game's ability to perform on the market. Moreover, the 2009-2010 releases of LotR games averaged around a 50-60% metascore and performed poorly at retail, aside from the expansion pack for the MMO (which went F2P some time ago so you can't really say it's a huge commercial success story either).

The IP isn't getting any less known, but the brand has certainly been diluted by the last decade of shoddy game cash-ins on the franchise.

Another game with exclusive pre-order content; another game I won't be getting until there's a compilation edition, if ever.

I cancelled my Catherine special edition and switched to the normal because I didn't want a useless pizza box hanging around the office/game room. I can't imagine someone would get excited about this when the realize its not a real quiver.

Of all the CEs I've seen, that quiver is the dumbest thing ever.

What can you use it for? As a target for ridicule when wearing it?

I always feel a mix of amusement and sadness when a 6.0 game gets an expensive collector's edition.

From what I've seen of this game, it looks like an utterly forgettable waste of the Lord of the Rings license. There's more to Middle-Earth than decapitating orcs. I wish Bethesda or Bioware could get their hands on the license and add some actual plot and exploration. At least there's Lord of the Rings Online.

Well said. Personally i don't feel LotR Online does the license any justice either but what you mentioned sounds like the way for it to go, by way of Bethesda or Bioware. Hey, we can dream can't we?

I want to be wrong. But I really have no faith that a LOTR game will be worth $60, let alone $130. No thank you.
Make WotN really really good, then we'll talk about a CE sequel.

OMG for real now cmon people let the series rest. Its been released on DVD about 7 times now and 2 times on Blu-Ray, there are at least what now 8 games? sheesh the last one wasnt even out 6 months before they pulled support for it.

@ChaseHammerJ

It's been on DVD twice and Blu-Ray twice. Your math is horrible. Theatrical and extended editions for each format. Also movies =/= games (aside from Heavy Rain).

All the games play entirely different. You have the original Fellowship which was a snoozer, based on books. RPG'ish. Then you have Two Towers/Return of the King based on the films which were fun co-op action games. Then an RTS series, then a shooter series (the Battlefront clone). You have an MMO. If you've played hack and slash games (tons of people do), you'd know there hasn't been a single solid entry in this generation of games. There was Untold Legends, and Too Human. Daggerdale sucked on XBLA when that just came out, and Torchlight has no multiplayer. I haven't tried Hunted yet, but this War in the North is by the team that made the highly addictive Champions of Norrath series on PS2, arguably the best hack and slash games of last generation.

So LotR property or not, this game will be fun and can't wait. The $130 CE is ignorant at best, as is the retail specific bonuses - but whatever.

Snagged Bioshock 2's $100 special edition for $18 at Target. Gotta love these oversized collector's editions. Also Halo 3's spartan helmet for $30 at Best Buy.

I don't understand why CEs often include items of no use whatsoever. I mean WTH do I need that quiver for, or the night vision goggles from the MW CE, or that bust of master chief's head that came with the Halo CE? How about giving us something more mundane but actually something that people might use, and that won't require such ridiculous prices. For my money a nice bookmark, or a mouse pad is infinitely more useful than a freaking bust (I mean come on!). Put it all in a sturdy and well styled box and I won't mind paying an extra 15-20 bucks for it. You'll cell more of these kinds of CEs than ones more akin to that ridiculous one above.

@2late2die I think you kinda answered your own questions. CE = Collector's Edition, emphasis on the COLLECTORS part. Most of what people collect is worthless to just about everyone except the person collecting it. And most of it is useless, because if you use it the perceived value decreases. This stuff is meant to sit on someone's shelf on display or tucked away in storage in the hopes that in 20 years or so it will be worth a whole lot more than what you paid for it.

It seems like they'd want to put the money into making sure it's a good game and marketing it well, and then use the profits to make a CE for a sequel.
