Direct2Drive offering new deals all month
35
While Steam users gorge themselves on a two-week-long carnival of deals and specially-created achievements, Direct2Drive is going full-on bacchanal with a full month of savings, changing both daily and weekly.
Today, for example, you can pick up Fallout 3: GOTY Edition for $9.85 and Empire: Total War for just $7.95. Sorry to be crass, but if we have to gobble up deals like this for a whole month, we're gonna need a feather and one heck of a vomitorium.

When I look at things like this and wonder to myself "can I register this on Steam?" I think they've already lost the battle.

@twocows Unfortunately most of the d2d games can't be registered on Steam.

Yes lol..OFC I want one.
Why would I want 2. Please tell me the benefits of having 2 different ones.
Imagine you had 2 Steams.
Steam 1 had half of your games and Steam 2 had the other half and there was no way to put them all on the same platform.
Now imagine that all your friends you got while playing games from Steam 1 were stuck on being in Steam 1 Friends list and the same goes with Steam 2.
Split games, split friends and the deals will never be as good as Steam.
It's a terrible idea.

@Slomoshun If there's only one store, what's to keep them from jacking their prices up? With no competition, they can have the worst quality ever. They don't have to compete, so they can milk you as much as they want. Having two stores doesn't mean you have to use both, but it gives you options. The stores compete for your business, and so prices are lower and quality is higher.

Yet...STEAM is the ONLY DRM that cuts prices like crazy...everyone else keeps them the same price.
This is why Steam should be the only one. OH and BTW...the publishers of the games are the ones that allow the price drops and sales on games..not the DRM(Steam).

Are you really claiming that Steam is the only service to drastically cut prices in an article about huge price slashes on D2D?
Not to mention that the reason that a service like D2D is cutting their prices like this is more than likely to try and stay competitive with steam. More competition = better prices and services for consumers.

FYI, D2D's version of Fallout 3 is incompatible with user created mods. That's not to say that there isn't a way around that, but their DRM is keeping you from legally enjoying the entire experience.

Elaborate please? I'd totally jump on that deal but I'm holding off because I've heard mods that require a custom .exe file don't work with it.

@PointlessPuppies I suppose there might be one or two here and there, but I've been able to run every mod I've downloaded off the FO Nexus without any trouble thanks to their mod manager.

@PointlessPuppies It doesn't look like there's a simple answer here. According to the sites I've been reading, more simple mods will run without a problem. The issue comes in when you find a mod that needs FOSE (Fallout Script Extender), which is pretty much required for the more complicated mods.
I'd be wary, because it seems like there are a lot of conflicting answers with what D2D Fallout 3 can run, and what it can't.

Perhaps I was too generic in my post. I should have said that almost all of the mods I would want to run will not work with D2D's version. The fact remains though that this version is not compatible with all the mods. Perhaps some people wouldn't mind going to the falloutnexus first and making sure all the mods they think they might want to install would work before buying, but I imagine most people would rather buy a version that works with everything. Either way, now they know and can make an informed decision for themselves. But thanks for your helpful reply, you have succeeded in chastising me for sharing information that I thought others might benefit from knowing - especially since that information is not shared on the product's page on D2D's site.
And yes, Pugnaciousturtle is right, it's due to FOSE not being compatible so most of the mods that make a significant change (require extended scripting) to the game will not work.
But before I'm called a liar again, here's the proof:

@maisp I have been running the D2D version of Fallout 3 GOTY for nearly a year now and have it HEAVILY modified with some of the most extreme FOSE compatible mods including FWE.
While it is true that the D2D version USED to be incompatible, that has not been the case for a very long time. Before you call me a liar, http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/216639-fose-in-direct2drive/.
So if you are thinking about buying this amazing game off D2D, you WILL be able to mod it without a doubt, I am living proof.

@Talutha Thanks for that info, it's the first like it I've seen anywhere. Two people in a 12 thread post who got it to run is certainly obscure, but I have no reason to doubt it - especially since you're specifically running the GOTY edition and can verify you're using FOSE dependent mods. I do find it strange that the official FOSE page still lists the latest version as incompatible with D2D, I assume D2D must have quietly updated their .exe sometime since it was released.
Anyway, sorry for any confusion I might have caused. D2D still has the same problem with Obvilion, but at least warns buyers. There never was a warning for Fallout 3, as plenty of people initially got screwed, so the bad feelings and information stay out there. I'm glad it's no longer the case though, especially since I recommended this sale to a friend despite the issue. It certainly is a great game and anyone on the fence shouldn't hesitate to jump on this offer now that the mod issue is cleared up. Of course, if that somehow turns out to not be the case, jump down Talutha's throat, not mine :)

@maisp We didn't say you were lying, we said you were wrong. Learn the difference before getting butthurt, please. In any case buying a game just because of mods is really the wrong reason to buy the game.

@Faceless Troll The only reason why I was "butthurt", as you so eloquently put it, is because your response wasn't helpful. This was a known problem as you can see from the responses you got. Talutha did it right by explaining why I was wrong, and in the process I learned that he was likely right and I can now use this new-found knowledge to help others. But let's agree to disagree, this thread is unnecessary now and might as well be down-voted to Oblivion.
The real reason I was drawn into responding one last time is that I disagree with the idea that the mod issue was irrelevant. I agree that Fallout 3 stands quite nicely on its own, it's certainly not like Oblivion which I wouldn't play without mods, but there are some great mods that really shouldn't be missed if you love this game and want to spend even more time in its world. I easily got an additional 40 hours of gameplay out of Fallout 3 due to mods and I'd recommend anyone who's interested to check out the Fallout Nexus. You can sort them by popularity if you don't know where to start, or search for something specific - if you can think of it, it's probably been done. Would I avoid a game that didn't have mods? Of course not. But if it was available on one platform with mods and one without, I would always choose the former.

Its such a shame MS and Sony have their heads too far up their exhaust that they probably won't even consider sales like this on PSN/XBLA.
Just ask Gabe Newell how lucrative these events are!

Nice to have competition against the almighty steam! :D I bought 1 or 2 games here and there from d2d before. I think it was Kings bounty: the legend for $2.50 back b4 scii came out. So I can vouch that they have some good deals and either no drm or unobtrusive drm like steam.
