El Shaddai will be 'divisive' in America, says Ignition
44
During last weekend's Anime Expo 2011, Ignition Entertainment showed off the PSN/XBLA demo of El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron to an anime-hungry crowd of convention-goers and cosplayers. Shane Bettenhausen, Ignition's Director of Business and Marketing, told Gamer Gaia that Ignition "always knew [El Shaddai] was going to be divisive, because the graphics are so abstract." He went on to say that Anime Expo's reaction was more receptive than the mixed bag of emotions he encountered at this year's E3, claiming that anime fans are "more willing to take more of a chance on things that are a little different and refreshing."
Bettenhausen doesn't think, however, that the title's Judeo-Christian origins will cause similar problems: "We actually wanted to take this text and treat it in a new way, to give it to a team in Japan that doesn't have any connection to that. They're not religious in that way, so they could treat it as just mythology and create a new graphical style and a new gameplay style." He hopes El Shaddai will avoid the negative connotation usually given to other biblically themed games, which he feels were created "just to try and sell" religion.

The Market these days is so oversaturated with generic games that follow a predictable mild within the genre they fall into that it makes it very hard for games trying to do somethin new to break through.
Not saying that this will be a good or bad game, but from example, games like Okami, viewtiful Joe, killer 7 and such failed in what seems to matter the most, sales.
I loved everyone of them but I was saddened that their futures were cut short (to an extent) due to share holders being scared of investing in new IPs, especially ones that are trying to break free from commercially tested ideas.
I wish this game all the luck and not because I'm a fan boy (played the demo a few months back and thought it was ok), but because I want developers to have the courage to push the medium into new grounds before we all sink into a haze of clones, tedium and mediocre games.
To innovation!

played the demo and loved it I'm just waiting for the reviews to see how long it is.

@GTThaAceman I can confirm there's around 12-13 hours of gameplay in your first playthrough on Normal, and you unlock two more modes after that.
Here's Eurogamer's review (they gave it a 9/10): http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-01-el-shaddai-ascension-of-the-metatron-review

I didn't have any problem with the abstract graphics, but the gameplay felt a bit lacking from my 10 minutes with the demo.

Indeed, the graphics were the best part of it. I really want to support this game, but It wasn't particularly *fun*, and the controls were a bit unwieldy.

Yeah, the combat and platforming left a bit to be desired in the demo.
As great as the imagery is for the most part, I thought it looked a bit bland and generic when you entered a combat arena though.
I dunno, I was really excited for this when I saw bits of it a couple years ago, but the demo has certainly tempered my expectations somewhat. Will definitely be waiting on reviews before purchasing.

I thought the controls felt wrong the first time I played it too. Then I read that you are actually supposed to press the attack button every half-second to do combos. Once I tried it again, it was like a different game! I still didn't find it incredible or anything, but much more satisfying than the first time I played it.

I, too, loved the graphics and art style in general, based on the demo. My two problems (again, based on demo):
1) difficult to gauge perspective when jumping in 3rd person; should've done a better job of showing your characters shadow underneath
2) parts were in 3rd perspective and parts were pure side scrolling; adds variety to gameplay, but I think they should've picked one and stuck with it

I love the game from what I've played but at 60 dollars I am worried about value. Who knows though I might take a risk.

I really can't recall the last game I played that was worth its full asking price. Some have come close and there are others that I have skipped over for personal reasons that probably would have well been worth it.
I guess the short answer is wait and see. You don't need to go buy it on day one unless you are really really sold on the game.
Of course having said that I feel I must also say there are probable a half dozen games on the horizon that are on my day 1 purchase list. Its just all highly subjective.

The gameplay in the demo wasn't exactly mind-blowing, but it was gorgeous, so I will definitely play it, either as a cheap new purchase (thanks to Amazon's occasional craziness) or a rental, but I won't miss out.

Honestly, I didn't like the demo at all. Didn't like the graphics or gameplay, nor thought it was anything revolutionary. I believe Amaterasu did all this better some years ago.

Played the demo... the graphical style and biblical themes didn't drive me away, but simply the gameplay. The game looks interesting, unique even, and the story seemed to hold my interest from what was revealed... but the controls were irritating and combat was just boring.
It seemed very much like a downloadable title in the neighborhood of $9.99 (goes and buys Outland after saying that).
So, Ignition... don't worry about the biblical themes driving away people... just the gameplay.

I love the visuals and the setting but I hate the gameplay. Why does it have to be a tiresome fighting game instead of a more varied action adventure game (something like beyond good and evil or okami) where you're doing a wide variety of different things instead of just mashing an attack button?
Posted: Jul 10th 2011 1:56PM djblewis said
@Jovrick In terms of gameplay, it's hard to think of a more varied game than El Shaddai. Every level in the retail version is very different from the last, and there's a great mix of 2D action & platforming, 3D fighting & platforming, and even driving later in the game.
Also (even though it isn't very clear in the demo), button-mashing is the wrong way to approach the combat. It's rhythm-based, so try attacking, pausing, then attacking again for armor breakers.. mix it up with launchers, air combos, power attacks, etc. You can find plenty of YouTube videos that show how insanely deep the combat system really is.

Well I'll see. I'm sure every level of El Saddai LOOKS very different but It seems like they don't play different. There are only 3 weapons, and the platforming appears to consist of jumping over a gap every now and then.
I just don't like beat em up gameplay in general, no matter how deep they are. Everything in this generation is either a shooter or a hack n' slash beat em up thing and I get sick of non stop combat. I desperately want more 3d platformers but if the game doesn't actually create interesting spaces to navigate rather than simply tossing the same 2 obstacles (the gap and the moving platform) at you every now and then the platforming is bad.
I also get tired of games throwing all their platforming into sidescrolling sections with this lazy, old man, defeatist notion that 3d platforming is bad by nature.

The demo was certainly aesthetically refreshing, but I'm in that crowd of people who felt that the combat was a little boring and leaves much to be desired. Based on the demo I know that this isn't a title I'm willing to pay $60 for (in my opinion), but I'll likely bite when it comes down in price to around $40.

Also: since when are anime fans known for taking chances on refreshing new ideas? I mean, the genre's more than little bit insular - I'm sure they'd be receptive to new things, but all they get are riffs on a few basic premises, poor guys.

Have to agree with the sentiment that the gameplay in the demo simply wasn't very good. It's too bad, because I really was interested in this game because of the visuals and subject matter.

I so wish this game launched at $39. It is obvious they are skeptic about sales in the US. Earth Defense Force just launched at $39 and I bought it day one. Apparently a lot of people did since my local Gamestop said they could not keep it in stock. My brother and his friend said it was the same in their area. Devs/Pubs are locked into this notion that a game needs to be $60 to make money, but how does that work when sales are low. At $39 it becomes an impulse buy and it has been proven to work over the years. I'm glad the EDF guys knew that...I just wish Ignition did as well.

i'm all for different and weird, but the time i spent with this demo just didn't do much for me. the combat was uninteresting and i'm split on the graphics. some of the side scrolling, like the riding of wave type things, was interesting and beautiful, but other parts just had ugly or even confusing ("oh, i guess those are supposed to be pits?") visuals. It being at a 60 dollar price point tips it over to a complete miss for me

I was in love with the graphics and strange storyline...
What killed in the demo me were the awkward camera angles and repetitive battles.
I'll probably buy the game, but at a reduced cost. There's no way I can justify $60 for something like this... Especially since It'll likely be a slightly flawed, one time experience. Much like Child of Eden, I really don't care if it's the most amazing five hour long game ever. You won't get my $60 with that (or $40 in Eden's case).
