Lorenzo di Bonaventura and
Gigi Pritzker, two producers who, collectively, are responsible for both The Wedding Planner and all three Transformers films, have secured the rights to produce a movie based on Taito's classic
Space Invaders. When asked why movie rights for Space Invaders would even exist, the entire human population of Earth crumbled into exasperated, bewildered piles of dust.
We first caught wind of a potential Space Invaders adaptation in a report by the L.A. Times last year, however it's unclear whether or not di Bonaventura's Space Invaders and Warner Bros.'s Space Invaders are one-in-the-same.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pair have begun the process of finding a writer to pen the script, which we can only assume will have very little to do with space/invaders, and everything to do with Shia LaBeouf.

@liquidsoap89 At least it was an idea. "Let's put snakes on a plane" is more original than "Remember that thing? Let's do that again."

Asteroids was also optioned. That seems like an even worse idea than this.

@Outrager At least with Asteroids you're out in space, flying around, destroying asteroids. Maybe you enter hyper space.
I think Space Invaders is less of a concept... you're on the ground in a laser cannon, and have three huge destructable barriers protecting you in the sky, while aliens in formation of five neatly packed rows come down towards you, while maintaining formation, and firing upon you. You can fire back, but you have to wait until your single bullet extends beyond the sky, where a mystery ship sometimes flys. If you destroy all the aliens, they simply come back in formation again and again until you're dead. Oh wait, maybe I ruined the movie for everyone....

I was going to say that.
At least with Space Invaders you could do a story. Asteroids is what, flying around and shooting asteroids? You could literally frame any movie around that and call it Asteroids.
And there was a Spaced Invaders movie already. I wonder how many people remember it?

Thank god for google.
The movie is also just as good as I remember it!

@Outrager Asteroids already has a director, and it's Roland Emmerich and the plot is some nonsense about humans being attacked by the aliens that destroyed earth. What does one add to that?

You know, if they get inspired and make something kind of like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, I could actually see this being kind of awesome.
Like... set it in the 80s, focus on some kid who plays games a lot and has to save the world once some wacky, reality-bending twist makes the Space Invaders enemies come out into the real world. Crazy special effects, lots of self-referential humor, and a smart script could make it really cool.

You know the truth. Game movies need to have a sense of humor. Instead, they come out thinking they can take down Schindler's List.
Sadly, I see lots of wire-jumping action in this one.

Will Shia crack the mystery of why the invaders from space came all this way to begin a very slow and rhythmic decent using a very linear pattern into Earth's atmosphere?
I've been DYING to know all my life.
Second question. Who will handle Space Invaders: The Movie: The Game?

At least they didn't option Joust...oh wait
Posted: Jul 10th 2011 7:05PM Epoque said
Joust could actually be really cool though. They could go animated, with a minimalist script. Throw in artwork from Jean Giraud and you'd have a brilliant piece of cinema.
Most unfortunately, it isn't 1979, and such a film would never get greenlit today ... though the success of L'Illusionniste is a glimmer of hope.

@Epoque - What's wrong with Python Anghelo's artwork?
He was the original artist who did the concept sketches and promotional art for Joust, and he once worked for Disney...

Absolutely nothing, I loved his artwork for Joust. I love it so much that it has always reminded me of Moebius, among my absolute favourite artists, and his much beloved Arzach. Anghelo is a commercial artist though, and I personally couldn't imagine him creating an entire feature length film's worth of concepts and designs. Giraud already has plenty of feature film work under his belt.

Out of ideas? They really shouldn't be.
Years ago a friend and I penned a screenplay that was bought up by one of the film studios. When we arrived we were placed in a room full of other writers. Apparently it's common to have these people stock up on scripts and stories 'just cuz. Most of them aren't made into anything but the content is there. I can't say much for our script but some of the things the other guys wrote... they were fantastic.
Ps. They pay very well.

And anyone who knows anything about writing knows that there are very very few stories, period, and almost everything you think is original really isn't. Change a name, a place, a plot device, they can still be boiled down to the same basic formulas in different combinations.

Gawd, Scott Pilgrim was so amazing, but I understand why it failed commercially. It's basically got the makings of a cult classic.
But anyways, I would say Hollywood is dry. It's up to the indie filmmakers now. Luckily, I just found someone to fund my script.

Soon we can finally have a film adaptation of the tired and true classic game Pong.
The plot, the tension, the excitement of the game wrapped up into a 2 hour star studded film.
Block boinks left, block boinks right, one false move and the game will be over!!!
Coming to theaters summer 2012

but really the block moving back and forth is a metaphor for how people have come to depend on the ever evolving technology too much, and the chain that holds them to life is beginning to sway in the wrong direction.

It could just be a mature psychological drama about the exasberated minds and isolated lives of those weird people that sit too close to you on the bus and waiting rooms.
