"mapMonkeys are a community of gamers who have become infatuated with discovering and sharing glitches, exploits, tricks, and strategies found in the video games they play." And now, that very same community is putting its prodigious abilities to use ... at Infinity Ward? "Four members of mapMonkeys are being flown out to California on Sunday, July 10th, to test Modern Warfare 3," founder Rezzo wrote on the mapMonkeys forum.
"The mapMonkeys are correct," Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling told CVG. "They're out at the studio to help us run Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer through its paces." While the 'Monkeys had previously lent their talents to World at War and Modern Warfare 2 -- two Call of Duty games that still suffered from a fair amount of glitches and 'sploits -- this time is different. Rezzo said, "We've been flown out to test other games in the past [...] but we only had 2 or 3 days to test the game and find glitches, which wasn't nearly enough time." This go-round, they'll have an entire week to ... un-glitch and, uh ... de-exploit the game.
While we love seeing this kind of preemptive planning, the cynics in us have already preemptively stopped playing Modern Warfare 3 because of all the future-glitches and neo-hacks! Can the mapMonkeys do the impossible, reach directly into our shared futures and de-hack the game? And if so, think they'd pick us up an iPhone 5 while they're over there?

Can we please stop rewarding these people?

Does it? They did the same thing for previous games and those games ended up being glitchy as all hell.
So this time they get a few extra days. Big deal. A week isn't enough time for 2-3 people to find any decent amount of glitches and even if they do, what are the chances that they report all of them rather than stick some in their pocket so they can be even more internet famous when the game comes out?
A public beta would find 100x the amount of glitches that a couple dudes in an office for a few days are going to find, and it would do so without sending a message of "if you cheat and glitch in our game and make our online community a living hell we will reward you with cool perks".

This has got me thinking, what could Joystiq possibly summon us cynical smartass commenters to do? What greater good could we come together for?

LOL you assume way too much of what public beta applicants will do. 80% of people who are invited to a beta take it as a chance to play the game early. They don't even attempt to report bugs. I can tell you in the first 2-3 days of playing SWtOR I wrote 4 pages of notes. So a full week fully dedicated to testing a game is plenty of time. I have been testing SW in my own time after working hours and stuff you give me a whole week with a game and tell me to do nothing but dedicate myself to finding all the issues. And you're going to be given a whole lot of information. Probably not in an FPS though... cause I'm not to creative with them I'd just be like oh check it out the guns work! The random exploits and stuff that ppl uncover is impressive but it's just not the thought process I have.

Sorry, should have been...
That beta that came out 1 month before the games release?
We all know this was just to get people hooked on the game.

What in the wide world of sports are you talking about? Since when did you invent the idea that I hate MW3? To the contrary, I run one of the largest Call of Duty forums on the web.
Why in the world would that mean that I can't think it's stupid for companies to continue rewarding glitchers/hackers with cool jobs/perks? It's sending the complete wrong message to every wannabee hacker/glitcher asshole out there, and in this case it's doing it without really helping much either.

I don't need to know that some lucky bastards are gonna be lucky playing something in advance of a game that at the end of the day, I will not spend money on.

You are just showing a blind disregard for Modern Warfare 3 because you don't much about this game.
That's ignorant. Spend just 60 seconds at this site, and I completely guarantee it will change your perspective.

MW2 was full of glitches, good to see they're trying to avoid a repeat of their last mistakes.

You might wanna try reading the article before trolling.
It says that while they did do this for MW2, "we only had 2 or 3 days to test the game and find glitches, which wasn't nearly enough time." This time, they will have a whole week. Do I think this will prevent all glitches? No. But, The Cole Trains comment is correct, IW is trying.

I covered that in a comment up above. A week is just as futile as 2-3 days.
It takes the ENTIRE ONLINE COMMUNITY weeks upon weeks to figure out most of the really annoying glitches, yet a couple of guys are going to do it in a fraction of the time?
Not a chance, and a few extra days won't make a damned bit of difference.

@SirUrza They still only have certain devs like Treyarch/Infinity Ward work on one at a time, so the developers really get 2 years if they start working on the next game as soon as they ship. Although their probably worried about fixing the game, and making DLC instead of starting their next game. They should have a public beta(even tho they won't) they'd find way more glitches, and could worry more about DLC/starting their next game after MW3 is released.
Instead they reward glitchers. They'll find a few bugs, but I'm sure I remember this interview correctly 402 was talking about MW2 glitches and how there's no way they could of found the stuff the community found in the first few weeks because there's so many of us. Yet they don't have a public beta...doesn't make any sense!

Yeah I knew about that, that's what I was referring to in the mistakes part, as they only had them for a few days last time, and keeping them for a longer time this time around will bound to improve the game.

Of course my question here is, does IW really trust known glitchers and exploiters to actually report glitches and exploits, rather than just hoard them for themselves to exploit when the game releases?
Oh yeah, and echoing other comments, shouldn't we be banning these jerks' asses from online play, not rewarding them?

@CnEY Ding ding. What possible reason does a community predicated on exploiting glitches have to make sure a game ships glitch-free?

Just one week? Seems futile. We all already know glitchers will find a way to rip this game to shreds on day one regardless.

The only reason they don't release a public beta is that they know everybody will end up bored of the mp and nobody will buy it when it comes out

This is a great idea but like you said, a week with less than a handful of guys isn't going to change much. Just give them a month or so. Unless these guys are pros at finding methods of "producing" these exploits. World at war was good after it was patched to close all the holes in the maps. Mw2 had only one that was ever an issue to me and that was the rock in fuel, I can't ever do these glitches but that one I could do and that's bad. I just hung out by the rock and killed the snipers. Killing someone in their gulley(spelling?) suit made me a happy camper. The game might not suck if they take quick scoping and drag scoping out. But still won't be as good as battlefield 3

Finally someone understands.
Actually its sort of like McDonalds. Just because its popular, doesnt mean its any good. Yeah sure, i will have it once in a while, but i wouldnt eat it everyday.
My biggest problem with COD is that the maps are too contrived and the whole experience is very "arcade-y"

I wouldnt say this is a reward, have you ever tried to find a glitch, its a really tediuos procees that in my opinion is really boring. Yes they get to see the game early but no they are not "playing" it they are "working".
