This will do little to ease the blow of the recent doubling of the streaming + 1 DVD plan.

Not that it affects me as a streaming only person, but still.

@R Planteer

Yeah, I just dropped my Blu-ray by mail subscription. There are four Redboxes within two minutes of my house, so I'll go rent me a movie for $1.50. I don't rent as much (I tend to buy a lot of Blu-rays).

This announcement is what I've been waiting for. Finally I can take Netflix with me anywhere!

bro when i got that email i had to read it TWICE to make sure i was correct. 5 dollars may not seem like alot but this shows that no price is ever really permanent. As a person who had Streaming + 1 DVD, i'm gonna have to do the Streaming only for now.

I read that there will be 3D movies available too shortly, on Netflix I think, but the article was unclear. This article doesn't even mention 3D movies at all though. :|

Hmmm... This is tempting me to switch to streaming-only rather than dumping my Netflix subscription.

That price change was kind of insulting, I think. Unless it was made to keep the company afloat, which I very much doubt.

They probably want to encourage more people to do streaming only.

@Gooblechev That's probably exactly what it was. There's no way $2 can keep paying for all of those content licenses. Every single thing Netflix has available for streaming comes with a licensing cost. I doubt that was ever going to be a sustainable business model and their big mistake was making it so cheap in the first place.

This was my assumption as well. They must see more profit from streaming than from mailing discs.

I may not be necessary to "keep them afloat," but costs were certainly rising - both the cost of postage and the bandwidth usage had increased significantly since they last changed prices.

@Gooblechev well if they are going to up their rates like that then they need to make sure they make their streaming library compatible with what you could get on a dvd and also not to mention how long it takes new releases to come out on netflix streaming.

Bummer. Just cancelled Netflix yesterday. There is no reasonable explanation for a 60% price increase. It should have been coming sooner, in smaller amounts, or later in the same format.

Pretty much any movie, unless it's like one of the Lord of the Rings extended editions or something. And do you really want to watch that kind of movie on a 3DS screen? Makes more sense, if anything, for TV shows imo...

I guess watching movies on 3DS makes very slightly more sense than watching them on a phone - only because if your phone battery dies before you get to your destination, that's kind of more important...

I'll check this out tomorrow, but I'll probably cancel my netflix account after that. The lack of streaming content was okay when I could get a dvd when I needed it, but things have just been getting worse. They've been making deals so they can stream back-catalogs, but pushing dvd releases out a month after they should be. It ends up being a lot of content, but not the stuff I necessarily want to watch. And not worth $16 A month.

At this point redbox is probably the best option.

Is this coming out in Canada as well? Netflix doesn't exactly have the best collection up here but even so... If it IS coming to Canada i will seriously have to consider a 3DS purchase in the near future.

Just like someone else said, Netflix is trying to faze out dvd rentals and move to a streaming only service. The price hike is probably to encourage people to drop the dvd service and move to the streaming only service. Thats my guess at least.

We switched to the streaming only pack several months ago. We had 2 dvds out for at least 6 months and hadnt watched them and the movies that came before those we had for a long time as well.

If we want to watch anything we either stream it or download it in this house.

I heard that the reason why they decided to divide streaming and dvd was because in a couple of years from now keeping that contract to stream you movie or show will cost a hell of a lot more.

This is COOL (amazing, even) but doesn't this mean we always need to be near an wifi location? How great would it be to just go into Netflix, download a movie, and then take with you on the go. I'm not acquainted with Netflix and it's services, so I don't know if they already do this.

I liked netflix better when it was DVDs only and you could get 2 out at a time for $8. I was able to get new releases easily and I could get any movie from their library.

such a shame. it went up a dollar every year for the last 4 or 5 years. at this price I may as well just stream new movies from PSN or VUDU when they are on sale.

Some people don't haul their tablet/laptop to work everyday and can't afford to drain battery on their smartphone because it's reserved for.... you know productivity type tasks.

Where I work confidentiality agreements keep us from bringing in laptops/tablets as a matter of fact.

Great. We'll never have Netflix over here. I'd be surprised if New Zealand and Australia get ANY video service. I know New Zealand has one for the PS3. A very crappy one that is free and much better quality on my computer. We may be classed as Europe for region but it still doesn't make us even.
