It seems like nowadays, unless you've got a video game starring your band, you're less a band and more a bunch of broke people hanging out -- Linkin Park proved that. Now, hot on its heels, Incubus has debuted its own Flash game: Incubattle.
Incubattle is a beat-'em-up that takes heavy inspiration from last year's retro-inspired licensed title Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Picking one of the band's five members, you'll take to the streets and combat a whole platoon of pirates aiming to steal the band's latest album. We imagine that's an everyday occurrence when you're in a band people know.
[Thanks, Lewis]

yeah, that game will surely turn those pirates into paying customers
funny: there are artist, who don't have that problem. just get rid of those outdated music labels, and start with "pay what you want".
worked like a charm for many artists...be your own boss and stuff

Everyone knows piracy doesn't occur when you self-publish, and that being signed to Sony Music is generally considered being a failure.
Please stop thinking leacher manifesto is legitimate social commentary. The rest of the world is too busy taking the economy seriously to argue with you.

Piracy aside, there are decent independent artists turning down record deals, releasing their albums for free or "pick your own price", and doing quite well off touring and merchandise. Just because you don't like them or they haven't entered your limited scope of awareness doesn't mean it's not a legitimate or profitable road to take.

"being signed to Sony Music is generally considered being a failure"
no, it's just stupid (unless your fanbase has no access to the internet, you are broke and in some serious need for a fixed income, or you don't care about creative freedom)
a quote from an recent joystiq article (Epic's Mike Gamble blames studio closures on 'stupid acquisitions'):
"There's a sea change in the European industry," said Gamble. "People are not looking to create companies where they're going to buy Ferraris. They're looking to create companies where they're having a great time and making nice money, but really doing the cool stuff."
having a great time and doing cool stuff, thats what art is about...not your stupid economy which is going to shit the last few years anyway, even though "The rest of the world is too busy taking the economy seriously to argue with you."
and yes, there are people who pirate music even though it's pay what you want in the first place, but those people are just so used to pirating, because it's what they did for such a long time. why else would they pirate an album, that you can get officially for free?
"F**K ARTISTIC FREEDOM, it's all about money! i want money! and if you give your music away for free, you don't make any money!" i hear you say
well...
first there is this thing called creating consciousness. if you offer something for free, people will come to visit you.
they will see your page = get to know you better
you are giving them something for "free" = they like you more as a person & artist (even if it's just on an subconscious level)
they don't get the music from some "faceless" source like torrents/usenet/... = they appreciate your work way more
if you add all those points, you get an user, who cares about the artist and his craft, and is willing to pay for his/her music. not everyone is going to pay the 10-20€ that a cd normally costs (in austria. the last incubus one is between 12€ and 17€), but they don't have to. no label means, the money goes (more or less) straight to the artist (there are some costs you have to cover this way, but your share is still way bigger than under a label) and 17 customers who pay ~3.50€/$ for my album + 3 freeloaders are better than 18 pirates and 2 customers who pay 15€/$
even ayn rand couldn't argue with that.

No, it's "know." I haven't heard anything about Incubus in probably 5 years. I liked their first (or first two) major-label album(s); I'm not a mega-fan, I hadn't heard of them before they got signed, and then I hadn't heard anything from them between like 2000 and 2007 or something when I heard they were breaking up, and I'd just assumed since then that they weren't a band anymore.
Oh, here it is: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/incubus_to_take_a_break.html
I guess it wasn't a break-up, it was just a break... but I stand by "know."

I'm sorry I offended you so badly by saying Incubus isn't popular that you've devolved to profanities in less than two dozen words. Maybe you should reserve this kind of anger for the defense of bands who actually make good music or something.

Well I guess he did, but personally I don't know who they are... I came into this comments thread just to see if the last sentence of the article was sarcastic (i.e. they're a band nobody's heard of) or serious (they're well-known in the US). I guess it was the latter, which is a little disappointing. :( I'll live.

You guys take this to the heart too fast. Of course, being that I tipped this in, you are all going to think "here comes the biased fan". Well, it's not really like that. I sent this in knowing how this look is well inspired by older games yet it's not meant to be taken as serious as you all think of it as. It's just a short little web game promoting the album that happened to leak out months ago. It's all in good fun, it's not to make a statement or proclaim itself as the next Uncharted (Man, I love me some Uncharted). Even the bands bassist admitted it: "It's all in the name of fun, not some elaborate message about downloading. "
If you don't like it, don't check it out. If you wanna kill some time and rack up some punches and points by all means go ahead.

Actually, announcing that you tipped it is what let us know you're the biased fan, nobody knew or really cared. And if this is some throwaway game meant to kill time as you stated and not and actual good game like uncharted (your example), then all you're getting is their bullshit anti-piracy record company propaganda. Hey Incubus, why don't you use the time you wasted on that shitty game towards music and make something people might actually WANT to buy. Instead, you'll probably throw out a shitty game and another shitty album this year.

Would rather play a game featuring "D-D-DON'T COPY THAT FLOPPY!" dude as a platformer. Now that'd be AWESOME.
