Mega Man Legends 3 Project canceled

Here's an aspect of the 3DS Mega Man Legends 3 Project for which Capcom didn't consult fan input: the publisher has ceased development of both the game and the downloadable "Prototype Version." This marks the second (and third) Mega Man game to be canceled in 2011, following the death of Mega Man Universe in March.

In a FAQ on Capcom-Unity, Capcom denied that Keiji Inafune's departure had anything to do with the cessation of his pet project. "Unfortunately it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria" to go into full production, and thus the plug was pulled. Our guess is that Capcom is backing off from the 3DS after it didn't achieve stratospheric sales immediately.

This news comes immediately after the start of a fan campaign in support of the continued development of Mega Man Legends 3. Combine that with the already beleaguered nature of Mega Man Legends fans who had to wait over ten years for news of a sequel, and, well, there's going to be a giant Servbot-shaped shadow cast over any announcements Capcom makes at Comic-Con this week.

Indeed. We get 4 different versions of the same Street Fighter game, and yet we can't have a single Mega Man title? Here's hoping Capcom drowns in it's own stupidity.

@JnRx Look, I'm not trying to sound like i'm standing up for Capcom (I'm not) but frankly, the combined "monies" of the MML fanbase will never please Capcom, as they (and pretty much most/all other large publishers) will not pursue games that do not market towards the current, largest, mainstream, audience. Sadly, the videogame industry has become the movie industry. 90% of everything is designed to sell towards the largest audience, and any "niche" ideas (which I generally will put MML into IMO) being ignored or handled by indie studios.

Even though I hope Capcom dies a slow painful death, I'm not and will never be on board with the slander towards DMC. The game is shaping up nicely from what has been seen so far(Not much may I add).

Anyway On a more related note. This was one of my most anticipated games. Screw Capcom. They don't seem to give a damn about their fans anymore. Just keep shoving RE games down our throats.

Please don't let Mega Man die. :(

Yeah, it probably won't bring the game back... But if nothing else, if it gets big it's bad PR for Capcom, and I think we all can agree at this point they deserve a swift to kick in the corporate balls.

Seeing Capcom's recent 3DS efforts, I wouldn't be surprised. It honestly doesn't look like Capcom really gives a crap about the 3DS at all.

On the other hand, while this is a true rain on MegaMan Legends fans parade, just keep in mind the whole "charging for a demo, or else we won't do this project" stunt. Capcom was going to pull crap stunts like that all through the project's development, culminating most likely in another "save file is permanent" stunt as well.

In short, given Capcom's halfhearted efforts on the 3DS as of late, it doesn't look like they were going to actually put effort in this anyway.

They DID warn that the project was never greenlit every chance they got. That was probably the most blatant red flag of them all.

You still don't hurt your fans like this even if you think you can get money from different fans.

Case Zero was a demo, from what little I played of it and from general gamer consensus it was a pretty well polished stand alone mini title.
I have no doubt in my mind the demo and the full game for MML3 would have been great.

Man, I hope this 3DS I bought actually gets good games eventually.

Lots of people are angry over this. I think fan reaction may play an important role here.

WOW. I am totally shocked they canceled this game. I loved the original back on the PS one.

Capcom was really starting to dissapoint me with the crappy Battle Network game, finally they released worthy Rock Man games until these last few years; Megaman 9 and 10.

Inafune leaving Capcom could definitely be the cause but it should have been carefully figured to cancel it..

Capcom has been going downhill as of late. It's really sad to see.:/

This is a sad, sad day. I don't own a 3ds and I never played the first two games but I was looking to get onto this one and jump on the 3ds train, guess that will have to wait, price drop Nintendo?

I didn't really care about Megaman Universe (It looked lame as crap) and I WOULD care about Megaman Legends 3, if it weren't for the 3DS. I'm not buying that thing.

Now... if Legends 3 were for the 2 main consoles, that'd be a completely different story. I loved the PS1 originals.
