With that said im pleased to hear that Bob Ross lives on thanks to Techlands remarkably garbage; Chrome Engine 5, adding happy little trees here and there.

Well, joystiq reviews usually work the other way around, they said the same of duke and surprise.. the game was a hit and it was funny no mater what they said...so maybe tis one is another one on the long list of "bad" games ......

I was convinced that I'd pick up DN:F no matter what any review said. Then I played the demo...

Just because the game sells well doesn't mean it's a good game.

@Hunter141072 That's an extremely bad example to bring up, since Duke Nukem Forever was an unforgiveable piece of garbage, which only sold so many copies by intentionally raping people's sense of nostalgia. Only half-monkeys living in caves could find that game remotely funny. I wasn't even able to finish the short demo because I couldn't stop throwing up in my mouth. My esteem of Gearbox fell through the floor after they had served up that particular turd to me. They did to that "software" what an unscrupulous used car salesman would do to a rotted out car - buy the corpse and fix it up with tape and dabs of paint, then peddle it off as a sportscar.

"This is interesting in online co-op but beyond simple in single-player, where you just have to wait for your partners to get hung up on level geometry."

Nice.

"Trees in the game's opening wooded level were rendered so slowly and with such egregious pop-in that the effect was a little like watching Bob Ross methodically create a picturesque forest landscape. (Ironically, The Joy of Painting had better shooting mechanics and driving controls.)"

Love it, although for some reason it made me a little sleepy.

"QBasic called, it wants its font ba-- oh, sorry, it called again and said to keep it."

Beautiful.

Reviews for bad games tend to be the best reviews. At least there's a way for them to provide some entertainment.

I couldn't agree more and Justin McElroy has the best Ebert-esque game reviews. You can't help but either smile, cry or Rage (for some), as he can turn a cardboard box full of kittens and puppies into plastic bag full of feces and cigar ashes...tastefully.

@DokiDokiBawanga Red Dead Redemption pretty much was THE Western game they knew they couldn't compete with that.

@DokiDokiBawanga It's perplexing, especially since they could have piggybacked on the success of RDR or movies like True Grit.

@Fire Walk With Me

When will we start to see those next 50 western games? Two years after Red Dead Redemption? 3?

Does Gunstringer count?

Seriously, Red Dead doesn't hold a monopoly. Does anyone think this had half a chance of competing with Call of Duty, or any other quality modern shooter franchise in existence?

Everyone's always competing with someone. Fear of competition is just admission of failure before the fact.

Damn while not interested in purchasing the game. It is surprising to see it fail at this degree.

As though it's trying some new modern style of dance to appear flashy and fresh. Only to trip on its leg and slam its face flat on the floor.

@GaryOldmanRulez Actually no. Having an opinion != having being biased. I'd hope people try to go into a game with an as open mind as possible, and then form their opinion. In particular for this game, I'd like to see a review of the PC version (which was delayed for a few months) independent of the mess that this game is.

A good example is Duke Nukem: If you play it on the PC, you have an OK game, depending on taste probably in the 4-7/10 region. But as it was a game that is "OK" to hate, a lot of people shit on it far beyond what was necessary.

The worst part is that a lot of reviewers that usually stick to their "7+ range" let all the hate that built up because they didn't dare to rate games outside of that range fly free for the few games that no publisher will get behind. IMHO that just shows the lack of actual independent opinions among game reviewers.

My sense is that this is a non-AAA title that tried too hard to look and act like a AAA. Maybe these mid-market titles should stick to just one thing -- the single player campaign, for example -- and do that really well.

And I agree that they were stupid to ditch the old west setting. RDR was great, but it didn't flood the zone. There is still plenty of room for a solid old west shooter.

That's a shame. The first one was good, the second one was great, so I had hope for this one, even though the both subject matter and era are quite different. However, I do believe that most of the Call of Juarez team was put on Dead Island when it received so much attention, so this probably didn't get the TLC that it deserved.

I'll still buy it when it's

Not to sure what to think of this review. You keep bashing the first COJ game, yet I found that to be one of my all time favorite games, and also thought it was better than the 2nd game by quite a bit, although I did enjoy both of them. But one of the reasons I really liked them is due to it being one of the very few wild western themed games out there.

I had no hope to begin with on this game since they ditched the western theme for some dumb reason. I really hope they do make another, but go back to the old western theme.
