Certain Affinity is currently discussing Crimson Alliance pricing options with Microsoft to offer more flexibility when the game arrives on September 7. An ad for the Summer of Arcade on the Xbox dashboard states that those who purchase all five games in the promotion will receive "Crimson Alliance and all three characters as a gift." The line is oddly specific, separating the game from the characters, so we followed up with Certain Affinity.
"When Crimson Alliance launches, the full game -- all the content and characters -- will be priced at 1200 points," the rep told Joystiq. "We've discussed other pricing options with Microsoft that gives players more flexibility. We expect that to be finalized and a formal announcement closer to launch."
Crimson Alliance was a standout XBLA title at E3, where the developers alluded that the game might not follow the standard pricing model. With the "full game" costing 1200 MSP ($15), which is the standard price for most original XBLA titles now, it'll be interesting to see what alternatives are provided to those not seeking full membership in Crimson Alliance.

That's not the worst idea I've ever heard, to be honest. I know it sets a weird precedent for XBLA games but honestly, I'd probably only play through this one time, with one character, so why *not* give me a cheaper option? With the plethora of free-to-play and XBLA/PSN/Steam and app-store games out there these days, why not use that competition to drive the prices down a little here and there? The dollar's in the dumpster these days and I'd certainly rather shop smarter than play fewer games.

I'm personally sick and tired of all these casual one play experiences who came up with the idiotic idea that we want our games to be a snickers bar that we eat then its just gone... I remember when games lasted over a year in terms of replay, dont waste your money on this drivel hold out against this diluting of the game industry and force them to develop quality gaming experiences in order to turn a profit.

when you remember games that lasted a year, were you a kid?
I remember playing Sonic 1 and 2 forever, but give them to me now and I'll blow through them in a couple of days. I mean, sonic generations and sonic 4 are Downloadable games now.
Also if you are looking for more engaging games there are more options then ever coming soon. la noire, mass effect, skyrim, uncharted 3...

I guess I know what you mean; we're paying good money to play games, especially full priced ones, so the basic idea is that one would want as many play hours as possible for your dollar. But I'd rather have a few fantastic hours than a dozen mediocre ones. There's already not enough time in the day to play all the great games coming out. Mass Effect, which I'm sure is fantastic, has deterred me for years just because I've heard it can be a 60 hour game.
This seems like a really solid idea to me. Like baby sea tuna said, I'm probably just gonna play through it one time.

It's not the games, it's us and how things have changed for us in life.
We used to be 12 year old kids with $5/week in allowance to spend on games, but tons of free time. You only got 2-3 new games a year because you pretty much only had christmas and your birthday to get them. As such, we had to stretch those games out much longer.
Now, we're all growed up and things have completely flipped. We now have plenty of money to spend on games, but our limitation is time. Even worse (or better) is that there are now even more really good games than ever before. Playing a game for a year means that you miss out on two dozen other really good games that you have no problem affording.
Now that I can afford it, I'd rather play 10 different, great games than play one of them 10 times. I can't invest 100+ hours into a game any more because I can't play 100+ hours of games in a month any more. If I spend 150 hours into a game, that's probably the only game I'll play all year.
I played MK64 for freaking ever during that generation. If that game had come out today instead, I'll be damned if I'm going to miss out on Uncharted 3 and ME3 and Gears 3 and AC:R and Batman AC and a bunch of other really good titles because I'm playing through my 175th flower cup instead.

You see, what you said has been in the back of my mind for a long time now, but I've never been able to put it in words as effectively as you have. It sure takes away the "guilt" I feel for finishing only two or three games this year - the last one being Might and Magic Clash of Heroes, which took me a month!
Boy, I remember playing through Final Fantasy VIII FOUR times (where every "final save" was clocked about 80 hours or so). I also spent a lot of time playing MK64 and GoldenEye. But now I don't even have time to consider playing a game twice and my videogame backlog just keeps growing.
Ahh, those were the days...

I approve of different pricing structures. If you end up loving the game, pay more to unlock other characters. Better than pay full price and have new characters available on release day.
Which is basically what all japanese developers and kiddie game developers are trying to do now.

Somehow your comment made me thing of a recent purchase: Hard Corps Uprising at 1200MSP. Even though the intro cutscene feature four characters, the full game is a rip-off, you have only 2 characters available and the other 2 (plus one more) are available as separate DLC at 200MSP each. Pretty unfair, don't you think?

Are they really going to charge extra for characters?

Scratch that, I misunderstood the article at first. But it sounds like a great pricing plan.

My guess would be 800 points for the game with 1 character or 1200 for all 3.

If you're playing with friends, I don't see a problem with only having one character for 800 or so points. If you're going to play alone, I think you might want to buy them all. I think this is an interesting concept, although it won't work with all games.
We shall see, and I look forward to trying this game.

Well, this year will definitely get Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet (glad it's finally out). Maybe Bastion and From Dust. As for the other two, meh. So, no free game for me.
I'm still bummed that Radiant Silvergun didn't make it to Summer Arcade.

They would have to show some really good titles for this to happen, I usually pick up one game from each summer arcade.. maybe once there was a second
