I could be dead wrong, but didn't Brazil just get their PS2 launch in around 2009?

@Shadowbender The vast majority of Brazilian gamers play on imported systems. The officially released consoles don't sell as well as Brazilian taxes usually make them much more expensive than the imported ones. I recall the official PS2 costing twice as much an imported system at launch. That's way too much to pay for warranty and support the local industry. It's a bother when consoles suffer malfunction but after a couple of decades we're used to that.

To be honest I've never seen a Brazilian PS2, I only saw those at our Sony Style online store. So many of us, like me, use american PSN accounts. Since we can't migrate I will still use mine though maybe I'll create a third account just to support their decision to release games here.

@nerdydesi1 Haha, same minute. You still present a good question with your last sentence though.

@HaroldoNVU Thanks for the info. Interesting you guys rely on imports so much. But with the PS Store now in your country, it has to only get better from here on out. :)

I'm a bit confused, didn't the PS2 just officially launch there last year? So did Sony launch the PS3 before the PS2 in that country?

@nerdydesi1 2009 actually: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/19/sony-finally-launches-ps2-in-brazil-or-welcome-to-2000/

It was kind of a joke here too. I commented further in my reply to Shadowbender's comment.

@SpaceFox
Yup. Specially being able to buy games without having to import PSN cards. I'm thinking of creating a Brazilian account just to buy PSN games, even though I'm keeping my main American one because of trophies and It's already the master account on my PSP.

@LEONLEONLEON

There are Brazilian PSN accounts before the incident, but that only allowed online play. What is launching today is the PSN *Store* ;)

I stand by what I said, They aren't being welcomed back to the store if they haven't had it before. ;)

I'm brazilian and it's really nice to finally have the psn store... but there's one problem: stuff is waaay overpriced in the brazilian store comparing to the north american. Assassin's Creed 2, for example, is R$79,99, around U$50! In the north american store, it's U$19!
It's even more sad that this is the price we normally pay for retail games. Taxes here are just absurd. Having to pay the same price for digital copies is quite ridiculous, especially because I read somewhere that there aren't taxes for digital content, so there are no excuses for this.
(on a side note, there aren't that much content in the store now, but this will probably get fixed soon)

@Hirun and the same overpricing thing occurs in the brazilian version of Xbox Live. Being a gamer is tough.

I don't know why you're complaining, it's still way cheaper than the usual R$150 - R$ 250 price range.

Do you think the 2014 world cup might be one of the reasons (It's in Brazil)

@byaboy Honestly? No. I think it's more related with the fact that Brazil is about to reach 5th place on "GDP Leaderboard" and companies are trying to tap into a new market. The problem is that now there is a hardcore piracy culture here, after decades of being abandoned by game publishers and hardware manufacturers added to taxes that makes games, consoles and PC parts cost between 250% to 320% what they cost in the US (our main games exporter). It's gonna take some time and some investment to change that.

Finaly! Thank you sony... Although the majority of brazilians have US accounts. I mean by the time I created my account 3 years ago, we didn't even had the option to choose Brazil as a country, so we selected either the US or some country in Europe.
