I find the long hair a little bit unrealistic. If the men shave their heads to prevent the enemy from pulling their hair back, exposing their throat, why not women?

That's what came to my mind too. Why do they decide to change the default Female Shepard, but not the male Shepard? Both defaults looked great in the first two games, and I'd prefer if Bioware just stuck with what they already made, in regards to FemShep.

she wasnt a true unique character that was made from scratch like default male shepard is, she was just a combination of reusable textures like what you got for the custom shepards.

They're doing this because they wanted to finally make an "iconic" look for FemShep, but wanted the fans to have some say in how she looks because she's kind of the fandom darling. The original default FemShep didn't even have a unique face model, so I think it's pretty cool that they're allowing for fan input.
I do wish, though, that one of the available options actually resembled original default Jane Shepard. She's got a fair number of fans.

@Irem - I agree with the last part. They could have just prettied default femshep up a bit, and called it a day.
I hope it will import the look of my femshep from 2, because I don't want to try to recreate her in the character editor.
