After it launched earlier today, we couldn't help but take Avatar Kinect for a spin. Using two clips recorded within Avatar Kinect and a little movie editing magic (on a Mac, somewhat ironically), we managed to create a simple talk show explaining the ins and outs of the app. Check out our talk show, featuring Joystiq's own Richard Mitchell and Chris Grant, in the video above.

like everything i've seen with kinect, its interesting but obviously needs improvement. i really do hope that the next system comes out within the next 2 years and includes an updated kinect sensor/software (backwards compatible of course) that is able to track all of these things much more accurately.
Thats not to say i dont like kinect, i have a few games that are a blast to play, and there are a few more around the corner that im looking forward to. but its more gimmick than it should be.

This kind of stuff (complete with Joystiq show theme and editing) is what I would have expected at the very least from Kinect back when the basics of it was first announced. For this to be its newest and greatest draw (minus the computer editing at that!) is just disappointing. Sad.

Waitaminute... 12 comments & only one is slightly anti-Kinect. What's going on here?!
ON topic, this looks neat but I really only see it really being used for pod casts etc overall. Still a necessary edition of course, but I can see most peoples first time using it with a friend being right along the same lines as this video - check out what we can do, with the X/Check/Audience etc, then just go back to standard video chat.

wondering why they didnt just publish the video and repost it on viddler. is that possible or am i uninformed?

@Red Son Rising
Unfortunately, you can't change "sets" during recordings. So, to do a "monologue" and a "guest" segment, it takes two videos. I downloaded each from Kinect Share and stitched them together with iMovie.

I would love to say I've tried this but ever since the update for that sizzler or whatever it's called photo magic thing in the fun labs that portion of the dash won't load for me. I've contacted support who claims their "looking into it". Meanwhile I can't help but imagine what this must be like since I can't use it and they don't seem too interested in solving the issue.

@Doomedlion Mine said available when I first signed on, but I played Googly Eyes with my kids (my 1-year-old actually asks for it by name), and when I was done, it went back to "coming soon".

I was able to DL this yesterday around 18:30EDT, but it seems like Microsoft may have limited access from little-to-none after 20:15. Even the download link on the KINECT HUB/FUN LABS had switched from being available to "Coming Soon".
I did get to try out the monologue and various scenes/panels, but I agree with Joystiq -- the audio was definitely something that required a LOT of tweaking. Then the KINECT itself had difficulty recognizing me, which was awkward in itself. Good concept, but it might have been sent out of the gate a bit too soon.
