Right, because the words: "we want to take away all the money we can and swallow everything in the process, no mater who falls, or if we are going to force people to do it OUR way" doesn´t sound as nice as a 3 point plan.

Read: Leveraging their IP to fight a ridiculous war with the largest download service around, resulting in an artificially inflated market share so they can begin re-implementing frustratingly draconian DRM again with little recourse.

You do realize EA has already come out and stated that it was not there choice to remove some games from VALVE. Its Valve trying to start the war not EA. All the games that were removed from STEAM are still on every other digital download service and site.

If Battlefield 3 is not on Steam, I'm blaming EA no matter whose fault it actually is.

@dragonfliet They really need to fix Origin. Bad. I tried preordering the digital version of Star Wars: Old Republic, and ran into these issues:

1. I could not preorder through the App. I had to pre-order through the webpage, and then later I'd have to download through the app.
2. I got an order confirmation email, and then an ERROR email that requested I go to a special URL and reenter all my payment information again. So I did.
3. Then it happened AGAIN.
4. At the end of each attempt to submit my order, I got the message, and I'm quoting exactly: "Based on our estimates, you ARE likely to receive your pre-order."

...Yeah, so I don't think I'll be pre-ordering SWOR now, since Origin is my only option. Keep up the good work, EA. Thanks for reminding us why Steam owns this entire market, hands down.

@Azev There are plenty of games on Steam that allow for non-steam purchases (such as GFWL games like Fallout and, you know, all of the other Bioware games). Since Steam is the largest digital distribution service, I can't help but see them as doing everything in their power to take as much of a chunk from that service as possible--especially as they are trying to do with Origin what Valve has done with Steam in a way that D2D, GOG, etc. don't do.

So yeah, Valve is pulling the games because of a TOS violation, but if you think that EA was innocently surprised by that and isn't trying to use it to gobble up some of the market, I have a bridge to sell you.

@onan Yeah. I already had similar issues with EAs other digital services and swore them off. If I have to get BF3 through D2D or retail, I will, but I have nothing but mistrust for EAs services and tactics.

So if I develop a new IP to be published by EA - do I still need to forfeit my soul like with Activision... or just the standard breath/blood/urine like with local law enforcement?

Yeah your 3 Point Plan:
1.) IP -Keep all of our EA PC games on Origin. Begin removing and making up stories why we (EA) removed said titles from other digital services when our intentions are clear
2.) Platform -Origin will be the only digital service provider to get EA only IPs
3.) Talent -since we bought Popcap, we will continue to release Origin Only games from Popcap as well as exisiting EA studios.

Anyone else always slightly bothered reading articles like this? Regardless of EA and everything they do, it's just weird to think this is how business-oriented the videogame industry has become. When I think of people coming together to make a videogame, I think of people like indie developers that work with small teams, small budgets, yet produce quality games. It's too bad companies feel it's necessary to incorporate all of these business/marketing plans to sell games, I'm of the opinion it's totally unnecessary when, again, you have plenty of developers making games that, while may not be technologically amazing as blockbuster releases, provide just as much entertainment/time wasting without laying out over-arching long term goals like this.

I can respect EA for being a competent business and doing well because they employ this kind of stuff. I'm also aware that now that this is the climate of the industry, they really have no choice but to plan things out like this. but it really changes my perspective on gaming in a negative way...I don't know, maybe I'm just too old.

TL;DR, Articles like this are reminders to me of what the industry has become and how it just isn't as appealing to me anymore.

I think their only real problem is the marketing of their (non-Bioware) EA Partners' games.

I'm not a fan of Origin in the least, but it kills me when everyone wants Steam to be the defacto digital distribution platform.

I like having choice, and while I'm not a fan of exclusives, I don't Steam to be "the platform". I want competition and I like having choice and I'll sacrifice some convenience to keep choice.

@TheDetective

Steam already has an ENORMOUS player base. Huge..

Also, Imagine you had 300 games and hundreds of friends on Steam and now you want to play BF3 or SWTOR or any EA game and now you have to set up a whole new platform just for one publisher.

Adding all your friends, organizing your games again and relying on Origin to keep running. Steam isn't going anywhere. But making games exclusive to a new platform that is in it's BETA phase is a stupid idea.

You don't like Steam? That's fine, your loss. But think of the millions that use Steam on a daily basis.

EA is getting a bad rep this year, and it's all their own fault. First with BF3 and the pre-order bonuses(they changed after too many people complained) again with SWTOR on LIMITED PRE-ORDER sales and adding a fee for pre-ordering. And now with forcing Origin...

Sigh..

Honestly, they want to make Madden...what, #24? That's some serious cash-milking. I'm already ready to move on to new IP's after enjoying Mass Effect and Dead Space.

If I want to play the same game over and over again...I will play THE SAME GAME. I won't buy new versions of the same thing.

Then when their games won't sell as well since they're not on Steam, they're going to blame Piracy. No, it's another stupid program we have to have in order to play our games on our computers that we don't want. It's also the fact that if your account is inactive for a year on Origin they can remove all your games and delete your account. Yeah, I may have gone through a terrible time in life and quit playing on my computer for a while, then I have no account? Woot! Then there's also the fact that Steam has amazing sales and many people have almost all their games on Steam (I have 100+ as well as a few people I know personally).

Actually once you install the game that you download through origin you can run it without origin being on. Which mean even less resources than steam.

Well lets say you buy a game on Origin and what not. You don't use Origin for a year or so, computer dies. So you get a new computer or fix it, have to reinstall the game. Oh look! Origin deleted your account and removed all associated content from it since you were inactive for over a year. Darn. Looks like you'll have to rebuy it! Man, aren't you glad it's not Steam?

People are ridiculous, all you have to do is install a simple platform and buy the game. How many people didn't buy Starcraft 2 or don't download World of Warcraft because they aren't on Steam?

@Azev No they didn't I wish people would stop spreading this, the media especially who misquoted and gave everyone false hopes.

What they actually said is that they've been working with ideas for more Mirror's Edge and that if a sequel were to come out, it would likely make use of Frostbite 2.
