Sony announced that it sold 1.8 million PS3s worldwide between April 1 and June 30 (Q1 for Sony), a drop of around 600K from Q1 of FY 2010. Though numbers may have slipped, Sony is still predicting an uptick in sales for the whole of FY 2011: 15 million PS3s as compared to 14.3 in the year prior. On the games side, Sony fared a little better with 26.1 million PS3 games sold versus 24.8 in last year's first three months.
The real success story for Sony's console business is the PSP, which moved 1.8 million systems in the first quarter. That's compared to 700K during the same time period for the Nintendo 3DS and the 1.2 million PSPs sold in Q1 FY 2010.
In closing: Nintendo really needs a Monster Hunter game on 3DS.

I have a 60gb fatty that I been using less and less lately because I'm afraid the bluray drive is dying. I'll be giving it to my father since he plays videogames like once a month. So I'm gonna get a slim for myself as soon as the price drops. Unfortunately my sister has quite a collection of PS3 games and uses the fatty very often, so I'll have to get her a PS3. My cousin is low on funds and we play on Xbox live all the time, but my 360 usage has gone down significantly, so I'm gonna get him a PS3 this fall. So 3 total.
Oh, I don't live with either of my parents so I'll have my own PS3. My fatty used to stay at my mother's house, where my sister lives, but now it's at my father's house. And yes, that means I only played my PS3 when I went back to my mothers house. I've been a PC/360 guy for a few months and I miss those dualshock controllers. Hope that clarifies things a bit.

Awesome, I just got a new PS3 on special at Amazon (Black Ops unit with $50 credit, it was pretty much $200 PS) to replace my current 120GB model which I sold on eBay together with black ops)
I may have to pick up another unit and some type of TV for the bedroom so that my wife and I can play games at the same time, maybe even some co-op action with Uncharted 3 in November.

@Tihn well psp have a good games on it they don't have to be new to attract new people to platform. My friend recently got PSP when i told him that there is a load of very good j-rpgs for it. But yeah not much is coming in future i reckon it's because Vita is coming and it sony concentrating on it.

Nintendo doesn't need a Monster Hunter title, they need some actual first-party titles. If they had even just the Ocarina of Time remake in the launch line-up, I'm sure they'd of sold a hell of a lot more 3DS units, and probably not have to cut the system's price by nearly a 3rd already.

3DS needs full support from both Nintendo and third party devs/publishers if they want to ensure a full foothold before PS VITA comes out; in the same manner they had with the DS vs PSP. Nintendo's a great company of both software and hardware... but this slack-ass piece mealing of features that should be standard by now, is just shameful.
Nintendo needs to integrate their damn points system already, too. It's ridiculous that you can't use the same points from the Wii upon the DS and vice versa. It makes me wonder if the Wii U will have its own price point system too.
Then, they need to integrate the Virtual Console library as much as functionally possible. Obviously, there's N64 games that might require more tweaking but having seen some of the "remakes" they're throwing out instead, it can't be that difficult to remap.
Lastly, the online scene is absolutely deplorable in comparison to the competition. I'm told the Wii U will change that, but let's be honest here... they said the same about the Wii. So hopes aren't high for any of this. I really would like to see a more heated rivalry in terms of quality features and games between Nintendo and Sony; almost in the way of SEGA and Nintendo in the 90s. At least then, we'd see some more stellar stuff coming from either company.

I cannot speak for everybody (that would be pretentious), but at least in my case I still have a PS2 and use it a lot for several reasons (sometimes even more that my Xbox360).
1- In almost 9 years it has not given me ANY issue and I know that if it fries a replacement is cheap
2- I still buy incredible games that again, are cheaper and, in many cases, better than current-gen ones
3- JRPGs Nuff'Said!
4- I can swap games with people since everybody seems to have one or to keep buying one
5- No stupid DLCs. Everything was in the whole disc
Now, I may sound like a Ps2 fanboy but I'm certainly not one. I just love that it is a game console and does not tries to pull a lot of tricks out of its bag (no streaming, subscription services, patches for bugs that should be fixed during QA testing, no motion-controllers gimmicks). And by the way, that was something that I loved from pretty much every pre-PS3, 360 generation.
I have a great steem for current gen, don't get me wrong. Unfortunately despise the great graphics and engines and all the mumbo jumbo, I think that companies are missing the focus on games. And yes, one of the reasons I'm still reluctant to get a Ps3 is backward compatibility.
but hey, that is just me and I needed to vent.

@Therion I agree with your comment. I'm getting a bit sick and tired of the practices this gen also. If the next-gen gets even worse with DLC, DRM, etc. I may have to go back to older gens, I've wanted to play some older gems anyways.

You got some great points there, but you also missed few things.
I am actually a fan of DLC, sure you have to pay bit extra for it since it adds value to your game and it is not as if people that work for your Game Developer work for free.
There is not way to eliminate all the bugs no matter how great your QA team is, I work in QA and while many of the bugs are documented (some don't get fixed because limited resources or lower priority) it would take years to go through every possible scenario.
Now if I can get a fix for old bug through Title Update that is awesome (just look at Uncharted 2, probably one of the greatest titles of this generation).
I think PS3 is just starting to hit the strides, we price drop to $199 it will dominate the market until next gen consoles get their hold on the market, which may take 2-3 years from now. I think PS3 will hit 100 million consoles 4 years from now.

Why would you be upset about DRM if you bught genuine product you are all set, but I can understand that it would be upsetting if you lost your internet connection and still wanted to play your game, some games require NON STOP internet connection, that really sucks.

That isn't the only version of DRM though. You got versions that boot you out of the game without saving just because your connection hiccuped. Then you got versions that only let you install it X numbers of limited times, and whether or not they "refund" it after uninstalling is irrelevant. Then of course there is the phantom software associated with it that you have to go out of your way just to remove even after uninstalling the game it came with.
Just because you bought the "Genuine" version doesn't mean it doesn't affect you. Hell, a "genuine" buyer might as well pay for the game then throw it away, downloading a cracked version of it that doesn't come with all the annoyances of the DRM.

Kind of want to get a slim now, sold it when to get a PS3 and I've been pretty disappointed in it ever since.

You guys realize that the chance of Sony dropping the PS3's price this year is like... 0.00% right? They can't. The PS3 costs $299. The Vita is going to cost $249. Sony is not going to narrow that price gap even more. Makes the Vita look like a ripoff, even though it's not.

Did you read the article above, SONY is forcasting that they will sell 15 million PS3 this fiscal year.
Last fiscal year they sold only 14.3 million and their sales for Q1 in 2011 vs Q1 in 2010 are (600 k) that is 2.4 million vs 1.8 million. That is 25% drop in sales.
Now if sales continue to drop like that at current price $299 then SONY will only sell: 10.725 million units this fiscal year (14.3 million times .75 because their sales are 25% lower in Q1 so far and this is best case scenario) but they are predicting that they will sell 15 million.
Only way they can achieve 15 million this fiscal year is if they drop the price of PS3 to $199. Case closed.

@pickupdoctor Yeah, I saw that, but you're predicting a $100 price drop. Or a $150 price drop for the 320GB system. That's crazy. That's insane. There's no way they're doing that. I think Sony is just hoping that all the games this holiday season will spur people to buy more PS3s. I think they're feeling pretty good, noticing that Wii sales are down finally.
If they're going to do any price drop, it'll probably be a smaller one, like to $279 or something along those lines. Like I said, I don't think Sony is willing to jeopardize Vita's launch by making it look overpriced in comparison to the PS3, or the now-$170 3DS.
