3DS price drops to $170 on August 12

Well that's one way to jump start sluggish sales.

Nintendo has just announced that the price on the 3DS will drop to $169.99 stateside on August 12. That's down from $250 currently, which we don't have to tell you is a pretty shocking drop, considering the tech involved and how recently the system was released.

A similar cut in Japan (effective August 11) will take the system from 25,000 Yen (around $317) to 15,000 Yen ($190). We don't yet have a specific price for a corresponding European cut, but Nintendo tells Eurogamer the price will drop by "about a third."

still not buying it.. games are crap and 3d effect makes my head hurt.

Games are crap? Really?

Zelda: OoT is amazing.
Street Fighter looks almost as good as playing on the XBox 360 and the online through wireless connections is practically seamless.
Tom Clancy Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is a fantastic SRPG.
Samurai Warriors is pretty fun also.

That's not even mentioning upcoming games like RE: Revelations and MGS: Snake Eater.

Sorry you have issues with the 3D effects. I personally don't, but I know it affects my wife occasionally. Have you messed with the 3D slider at all? I hear not playing with it on full blast tends to alleviate some people's problems.

Good price, but all they really had to do is have a NEW mario game to go at launch and the thing would have sold great. Why can I figure this out but well paid executives can't?

@MarkcusD Maybe the real question is: why aren't you a well-paid executive? :)

Hmm, want to get one now, but the only game I'm interested in so far is RE: Revelations and that's not till 2012. There's Super Mario 3D Land, but I'm not sold yet.

Cool, now it's a reasonable price but I'll wait for the inevitable release of the 3DS with a new design and hope Advance Wars or Fire Emblem are released or at least announced for the system.

Even better reason to ask for this for Christmas. I sure hope they put out a sweet combo package for the Holiday. I would love a Ocarina Of Time 3DS bundle.

when they come out with new colors I'll get the 3DS. Unless they don't come out with new colors before Animal Crossing 3DS is released, that is....and maybe, just MAYBE, then I'll get Aqua Blue, but I'd rather have a Fuschia or Purple one

An $80 price cut just a few months into the system's life... Nintendo must be really desperate.

I think I will Finally pick one up. I Just wasn't comfortable shelling out 250 when I can get a Wii and game for 100 dollars less. Now we just need more colors. Aqua Blue was a poor choice
