I'm only slightly surprised by this and not all that bothered. Blizzard's been coming up with new ways to make money off its games for a while now. It's a shame in WoW's case since they seem to put out more money-making features for that game than innovative gameplay features.

@(Unverified) It's why I have VALVe as my favorite game company. They seek new gameplay features, and they do have cashgrabs, but they're all off to the side in the vein of PWE.
PWE - You don't NEED that $15 7-man flying dragon mount, you can spend ingame money to buy yourself a griffon. But the dragon is cooler, so there goes $15.
VALVe - You don't need that $7 Dragon Mask for pyro, but you want it and don't feel like waiting to craft it. You have no patcience, so there goes $7.
Also, take the example of TF2. They had it be a normal game for 4 years at a nice low price of $20. They gave it many free updates over those 4 years. After they added a microtransaction shop, they noticed they were making more on the shop and less on people buying the game. What'd they do? BAM, TF2 Free2Play, and the Steamdom Rejoiced. And they're working on DotA2, which is rumored to be F2P as well, with microtransactions like TF2 has now. And it'll work, because they're VALVe, and they put gameplay first, which gets people in, and then offer you stuff you want, which gets them money and makes the game last longer because they can afford to support it.

This is a neat feature for people who want to use it. Everybody else can just feel free to ignore it.

It's not going to be easily ignored when there's bots running all over the place farming stuff for companies.

I love seeing free-to-play practices on 50-60 dollar full retail releases.

I dont get why people are getting their panties up in a bunch for? Does other people's gear EVER have an affect on how you played Diablo? Back then there might have cause an inflation to SoJ as currency, but thats bout all I can remember. because everyone just grind on their own little world, and if other people have better gear it actually helps you grind faster. Who cares where Person A got his item... there isnt a AH you can stand in front of and flaunt your gear/guild/mount like WoW anyway.

The game with or without Real Cash AH does not affect your experience on the game, and this is especially true if you only play with friends.

Try playing when your internet is out, have random people stealing boss gear and hauling @ss on an unprecedented level, or logging in just to run spam macros for their gaming sites...

I'm sure you'll have sand in your vagina too...

You should make sure you know what you're talking about before you speak.

"each player will be getting their own loot drops that only they can see and pick up. This stops the hustle to click on items first and allow players to play the game without worrying about fighting for drops."

source: http://www.diablofans.com/topic/25979-drops-for-you-and-me/

This new system will not affect the game in a negative way in any way. If there was no real money auction house, people would do it anyway through third party websites/forums.

How could there be scams? You purchase an item in the AH, you receive the item, money is removed from your account. If you choose to purchase an item through any other means, then it's your fault for being an idiot, not blizzards. If someone calls your telephone, and you give out all your banking info and SSN and your identity gets stolen, is it the phone companies fault?

I've been spoil by having great internet my whole life so i am not sure how it works else where. but i believe you can create private games online like D2, and essentially be playing single player. Nobody you dont want would be able to join your game.

And almost every single PC games these day requires a internet connection before you can play.

That's a pretty hardcore fanboy speech there...I commend you. And I say this as a Diablo fan.

If you think this can't be exploited..then your a bigger fool than I thought...when real money is involved scam artists 10x more motivated.

But you know what..., your right! Let's see what the actual outcome of all this will be and get back with me on all that...I get the feeling your going to be disappointed like the rest of us...oh but...that's right...you already know don't you....

Not a bad idea. Might as well have the RMT people work for you if they're going to continue their practices.

The people that'll probably have the BIGGEST issue w/ this will be the top dogs in the RMT business -- their workers will probably be able to make 10x the amount of money as they would acting as slaves to their employer by 'going direct.' Doubt Diablo itself will have the ability to change the entire landscape, but it could get interesting if the system lands on WoW as well.

@Muu

Most often, those workers only have access to US and European accounts via the company they work for. So they'll still be slaving away, and they'll just undercut whatever the going in-game rate is. Its not like they have any required profit margin. They'll sell whatever for however much if they think there's a market for it.

Blizzard isn't eliminating any competition, they're just joining the party. They have the good fortune of legality, but that only gets them so far.

My interest continues to wane for Diablo III, just too much time has passed between games, the industry as a whole has evolved so much since the days of D2 that now I can have the same experience with something like Torchlight for a quarter of the price. I'm sorry D3, but I just don't find myself interested anymore.

Neato. I'll make sure to be an early adopter and find as many dupe exploits as I can to rack up cash in my bank account.

I am laughing so hard inside. I honestly can't believe it, but I guess redheads are evil...kotick...i mean you.

I can't believe this is happening. I mean I thought it was a joke at first, but then I read it more. I think I am definitely not liking Blizzard anymore. I didn't want to think it was Blizzard that I hated, but it seems it is, even Pardo is in on this idea.

I refuse to be a sucker of this magnitude..sorry. I get off here.

It is like a legalized black market and only legal because you give Bli$$ard a cut of your earnings. Sort of like how gambling works, gambling is only legal as long as you pay the government taxes on the money you earn.

"But I actually think that with Diablo, it actually will end up being a good thing, at least something that players will be excited about. It really is something that a lot of players are already looking to do."
-Vice President of Corrupting Good Game Design Rob Pardo

Yeah that was why I was looking forward to this game. That is why I checked news and updates about Diablo 3 for over a year... I don't care about playing fun new classes, building my own character, revisiting the cursed town of Tristram, defeating an army of demons in an epic storyline... That's all secondary. I was really hoping Blizzard would give me the chance to be a gold farmer. Now I can become what I hate in a game that I (still?) love.

In the beginning of this gold farming business, didn't Blizzard oppose the practice on some kind of moral/ethical ground?

Now I wonder if Blizzard was just blowing PR smoke up our butts. Instead of truly opposing this stuff, they were really just waiting to figure out how to profit off of it themselves?

They are just responding to the current websites that sell D2 items for real money. They see those "illegal" sites making a lot of money, and found a way to fit it in.

At least this way, the players will be getting most of the money, Blizz only gets a small cut.
