Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions hits iPhone this Thursday
45
While it may have missed the "July...twen..blah..blah.." release window that was promised before, Square Enix will finally bring menus and moogles to mobiles this Thursday. That's when the strategic wizards-on-a-grid simulator, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, lands on Apple's iPhone.
It's important to note that the game will only be compatible with iPhone 4s and 3GSeses, and that iPad players will need to wait for the iPad-specific version, which should be launching around a month from Thursday. Historically, though, it's never been a good idea to count your chocobos before they've hatched.

Though I doubt it, I'm hoping the price will be under a respectable $7!
Mind you, I just checked the App Store and FFIII is still $15.99 ...

Truth be told, as much as I love FFT (I have both the PSOne and PSP versions); I probably would pay that price regardless. My PSP & games were in a case that went missing nearly a year ago; so I'll have to purchase it again anyway via PSN for the PS VITA or on iPhone/iPad.
Damned either way to enjoy my favorite FF game of all time, haha.

Yeah I would gladly pay 15, this is one of the best in the series. Not to mention there arent really any good tactic-RPG games on the iPhone.

Even IF I owned War of the Lions, I would probably still buy this version. I'm not in anyway saying iOS gaming is better than the DS or PSP but I really love the convenience of one do it all device.
In fact, as much as it pains me to say this, I might not get a 3DS or Vita. At least not for the foreseeable future. I'd probably fold if Kojima announced a new MGS.

An original MGS is definitely possible on the 3DS, but the MGS3 remake is actually adding more than some might think. Other than the obvious 3D, improved control, and touch screen use they're adding co-op that's suppose to be similar to peace walker. Do you remember the ape escape game in the original, they can't use that because it's owned by sony, but they seem to be trying to replace with something yoshi related because they have declining exactly what it is.

I want it for my ipad but I might just buy it anyways cause I've gotten sick of waiting and I might explode from all the waiting.

@(Unverified) You can still play it on the iPad, it just won't be optimized for it.

Considering that it's only $9.99 for the digital PSP version, I would hope that they would price this a bit lower. Knowing Square-Enix, however, I have a sneaking suspicion it won't be reasonably priced.

For the love of god, why don't devs make their apps universal? Since I can't play it on both, I'm more likely to buy it for neither.

@gundamxzero Yes, but they will be anti-aliased pixelated, take up only 80% of the screen, and have super large buttons.
Up-scaled iPhone/iTouch games on the iPad suck!

One of the best final fantasy in terms of plot. I'm holding out hope for an android release

Wonder how much space I need to reserve on my iPhone for this? What gets the boot? The iPhone is already a superior handheld game system than the DS Lite was....

Correction. This game has zero Moogles.

@tanooki equipped He is right though, at this point in Ivalice history moogles were hunted to extinction.

Here's a far more important question- did they fix the attack-cast animation slowdown, or is this just another broken port? Because I couldn't tolerate the first opening battle on the PSP- which is a shame because I love Final Fantasy Tactics.

@Nestaja THANK YOU. Someone else who has some sense. Check out the preview video... They seemed to fix the slowdowns (maybe), but they just cut out ALL the sound effects during those sequences, probably because of performance. Still unacceptable... *sigh* I dunno if I'll tolerate it.

@Vidaluko You can see a little bit during the spells, just like in WotL.

I don't see how you people can stand playing crappy ports. I played 2 minutes of the PSP port and instantly turned it off once I experienced the horrific spell slowdowns/audio desync. Now, with the iOS port, it looks like they just outright refuse to play any sounds during spells.
Original game: Terrible translation
PSP port: Unbearable slowdowns/audio issues
iOS port: No sound at all during skills/spells
When will we get a proper English version of such a wonderful game? :(

The Devs have already posted on their FB page that the sound issue was a bug with the build they used.
THE FULL GAME WILL HAVE ALL SOUND EFFECTS!
No worries guys...this looks to be the real deal. And I must say I am impressed with their integration of touch. The rotation of the battlefield was completely re-worked just for the iPhone. Nice!

@Noigel If this is true, then I'll be a happy camper. Still, I'm waiting for some detailed video reviews to come out to hear and see how battle flows.

Posted: Aug 1st 2011 6:37PM LucasTizma said
@RebornEvilChild You must not have played the original PSX game to know how horrible the performance is on the PSP.
Anyway, yes, the iPod Touch 4 is in the same generation as the iPhone 4 in terms of hardware capabilities.

@LucasTizma Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to play the original. I hadn't joined the Playstation wagon until the PS2.
And I do know iPod 4 has same hardware capabilities as iPhone 4 but some companies mysteriously don't support iPod like the new Google+ app which is only compatible with the iPhones and not iPods.

Yeah I was hoping to get this but if it's $16 I might as well wait. Hopefully ff3 goes down in price, usually all of squares game go on sale when a new one is released. Even though this game may be worth $10 on psp, I don't think the smartphone platform should be charging so much for a game. I think its possible to have more smartphones in people's hands who play games on them than it is to have people buy a ps3 or xbox. A ps3 or xbox may cost around the same as a phone but they aren't portable and the only real thing the ps3 has on the smartphone world is a blu ray player. I've been shocked by the production quality of mobile games these days.

@mikemyerz666 considering the PSP version is just a port, and this one has custom controls for the touch screen (beyond just tapping on menu items), I'd say the price would be justified if a bit higher. At least I would assume they'd want more money for the one they put actual work in on.

Oh yes, plus this game has been released on multiple platforms(PSX, PSN, PSP) and they've already gotten the initial worth out of it. It was a greatest hits title on PSX so they should be charging less for this tiny version of it.

When I first thought of it, I thought I'd wait for the iPad version. But after seeing the demo and how well they implemented touch controls, I think this is going to be an awesome pocket addiction.
