Man and Shadows of the Damned is so good too. Sad to see it just die out like that....I'd love a sequel myself.

I don't get it...what exactly is James Gunn's involvement in this? Considering that it was a game already in development before Warner Bros. involvement I can't assume he's writing the game...maybe just making the translation funnier and more suited for american audiences? I like Gunn, Slither is one of my fav movies of all time so I'm down, but still. I'd like to know what exactly he's bringing to this.

Most likely he'll punch up the translation. A few podcasts ago, Joystiq explained how 8-4 basically wrote all your favorite lines from Shadows of The Damned.

I hate Gunn's movies, but maybe he's more suites for games. Never not psyched for a Grasshopper game.

That a was about a bikini samurai squad. This is about a cheerleader and her disembodied head. It's DIFFERENT.

(also Suda51)

To be fair OCB was /supposed/ to suck, most everything D3 publishes from japan is a budget/bargain bin title from the beginning. The difference is it's a niche title that was supposed to satisfy a primal need for T&A and B&G. This on the other hand is likely to be a bit more refined and polished.

Can someone please explain to me why people get so excited over Suda 51 games? I've bought 3 of them now and the only one I even bothered to finish was Shadows of the Damned and, aside from the music and voice acting, was thoroughly unimpressed.

He's a funny guy and all, I guess, but it's like someone made a list of all the things that you *shouldn't* do when making a game in 2011 (invisible walls, unskippable cut scenes, QTEs, insta-deaths, shoot the glowing ____ enemies, long boss battles without checkpoints, etc.) and he just uses that as his design documents. Sure, it was kind of charming, but not nearly enough to make up for all the clunk.

So what is it that I'm missing? Is it like the game equivalent of Frank Zappa, where either you "get it" or you don't? Because, like Zappa, I just don't "get it."

I think you answered your own question. Personally I love his style of games. While the gameplay isn't always too solid, the crazed story and humor is definitely there in spades each time. He's just one of those "love it or hate it" developers that pop up.

@baby sea tuna I loved No More Heroes, didn't enjoy Shadows of the Damned at all and never played Killer 7, BUT I'm still looking forward to this. I think it's a style over substance thing mostly.

Shadows of the Damned has a very similar control style to Dead Space, which I hate. The slow, confined, over-the-shoulder view and moving like you have lead ankle weights. No thanks.

This game, however, let's you slice things up as a Japanese cheerleader.

Sold.

So, wait, what is Gunn doing? I thought Suda was writing the script. Is Gunn writing an adapted translation, a la Neil Gaiman and Princess Mononoke?

@gatotsu911
Pretty much. You can't always just translate a title directly and expect all the humor to make it, sometimes you need someone to rewrite the translated dialog to make better sense to a new audience... just as long as they dont try to change obvious Japanese things like changing someone named "Ryu" into "Roger". Man do I hate that.

Same publisher as Bastion? Looks like a double win for WB.

I enjoyed Shadows of the Damned, though I rented it. It's probably not worth $60 as I beat it in 7 hours and it doesn't even have a new game+.
