Epic on Gears of War 3 leak: 'saddening' and 'frustrating'

As you might imagine, Epic Games wasn't exactly thrilled when an unfinished version of Gears of War 3 leaked onto torrent sites early last month. Executive producer Rod Fergusson told Edge in a recent interview that the breach was "saddening" and "frustrating," mostly because some fans were choosing to "ruin their own experience" before the full game's launch.

Fergusson specifically called out folks who shared video of the leaked game online, adding, "I get people going, 'oh no, I just watched this thing on YouTube and it's totally given away something'. And I go, 'well, why did you go looking and why did you watch it?" Probably the same reason why we can't stop going to Nicolas Cage movies: We can't not watch them, despite the fact that they're pretty harmful to the human psyche.

So I guess they shouldnt release the game at all then, wouldnt want any assholes posting spoilers after the official date.

They probably shouldnt beta test it either since assholes would be ruining their experience by playing unfinished code which makes Fergusson all sad and frustrated.

But play testers are actually going to help improve the game while the people torrenting the leaked copy are just going to brag to all their middle school friends during lunch.

It was only twoish missions that were leaked. Less then 5% of the game.

And the leak came with praise. A lot of people who were iffy about getting game due to a lot of console-centric footage, outsourced PC port, and different things. When they heard that the leak was actually really good, those iffy people became super hyped.

In addition, the developers used the leak to gain feedback from the consumers, on what was good and what needed imporvement.

Crytek did or EA, one of the two involved in Crysis 2.
They claimed the PC market was dying because of Piracy and leaks.

It´s the same because even though they don´t say it, they always talk about the console markets as "safe", and users usually act like that too. The bad publicity is always geared to the p.c. even though we all know that games like SSFIV AE were available 2 weeks before official launch just to mention one, but companies only blame the p.c. for this kind of stuff, consoles are always seen as "safe" but that´s not real and this is the best proof of it.

It's seen as safer because you have to mod your Xbox just to be able to illegally download games. Not to mention the fact that you can easily get caught if you sign into XBL with a game that isn't out yet. I've seen plenty of people get banned for j-tagging and what not. It's just more accessible on the PC is the point they're making.

Yeah, the build that was leaked (from the few seconds of the leak I saw) doesn't have any facial or body animation during the cut scenes. Sure if you just want a spoiler, then I guess it'll suit them. But if they want the full experience, they'll get the full game in September

Yeah, I agree. I don't think it was a damaging leak, and it did restore some confidence, but their both in the same boat where they lost control of their respective titles. I think Epic got it worst, but I still feel it's embarrassing to have your code leaked (maybe I just always associate leaks with Valves Half Life disaster).

And I thought 12 hrs of the game were leaked - at least, that's what I heard.

Yeah National Treasure was definitely a steaming pile of dung. I thought the first one was retched and refused to watch the second. So many of my friends as family were like "Oh, why don't you like it? It's a great movie." I thought it was a bad KIRF or Indiana Jones.

Pardon me for being upset. This guy made games I grew up with almost two decades ago. Without the PC, he wouldn't be anything, Gears of War really changed this guy from a relatively humble developer to an arrogant self-proclaimed rock-star.

Its more upsetting since I am not one of those PC pirates that hurts the platform and caused him to completely piss all over it in the first place. Sorry if I take some pleasure in bad news coming out of the other camp, being bitter old me.

The real spiteful cocks are the Microsoft people that are keeping these games 360 exclusive, if it were up to Cliffy B I'm sure Gears 3 would be on PC.

Microsoft canceling the PC version of Alan Wake was one of the most spiteful moves in recent gaming history, just one of many bullshit attacks on PC gaming made by the asswipes at Microsoft.

UT - UT2004 had a rocking community...
UT3 destroyed it all... and why?
because they made the UE3 primarily for the Xbox 360 and didn't give a crap about the PC community behind Unreal.

Well i tell you one thing: if 3 people in a 50 man Clan buy UT3 (or god forbid, download it illegally before the release date) and all 3 tell the other 47 clanmembers that it SUX (and we all know UT3 did suck)! then you just lost 47 first day buyers.

I love Gears of War... but i really want a new proper Unreal Tournament for PC, with LAN, with Map Editor, with double-wall-strafe-jumps and all that sh*t you could never do with a Gamepad!

i think it is interesting to see games in an early *unfinished* state and get a peak behind the curtain, then later compare the final product.

They make 2 games that were on the 360 only (first was on the PC) and you think they've abandoned the PC, don't be silly. Chances are that after gears 3 they will work on UT4.

@Rubbishy Me UT3 didnt do that well and Gears1 was horrible on PC, the iPad game is more likely.
