...Surprise, surprise.

Wait no, *totally* expected. Let's see if their board members take an "Iwata" style paycut.

If Call of Juarez the Cartel is any indication of what this studio is capable of, it will turn out to be a major turd.

Feh. After they tried to hamfist a stamina/fatigue system into a Pay To Play, I swore Squeenix off completely. Just as I've done EA and Activision. I suppose all the big devs got too big for their britches, now the only thing they can do is fall. I wanna see some anvil dropping, Acme style!

Well of course their profit is down, they haven't made a halfway decent game in years.

I was never a big fan of Square Enix, but I at least hope that they stay afloat because they own EIDOS. If it wasn't for that, I really wouldn't care. They're washed up, and their lack of any decent titles proves it.

Let's just hope Deus Ex keeps them in the game.

@MW4560 "they haven't made amazing game in years " i might agree with
but "halfway decent game" no way
seems to me people don't have "average grade" anymore
the game is either "amazing GOTY" or "PoS i wont play it even if i was paid"

@alzeer Why should I settle for mediocrity? I pay $60 plsu tax for a game these days, so pardon me if I don't want to waste it on something sub-par. Either a game is absolutely fantastic and totally worth my money or its something that I'll play and end up forgetting, which is exactly what most Square Enix games have been over the last few years. If a game is indeed "average", then its not worth my time. I only want to play of what there is on the market- why wouldn't you?

I distinctly remember them saying they would cut the smaller games that don't give them such revenues in order to focus on new releases for their major IPs.

http://www.destructoid.com/more-detail-from-square-president-no-more-non-mainstream-games-allowed-87774.phtml

It (honestly) looked promising. They said they would cut the cooking mamas and the nicotto towns in order to deliver better games. What happened to that?

It will come in a wave for SE now.
Final Fantasy Type-0
Deus Ex: HR
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Hitman 5
Tomb Raider
and so on.

Deus Ex is sounding like a resounding success from advance reviews, so hopefully this will start a turnaround for the embattled SE.

The biggest question is whether Square will actually respond to market changes or stay the course until failure?. Buying Eidos is not sufficient, they need to approach game development differently.

I haven't bought a Square game in years, and that includes games in one of my favorite series, Kingdom Hearts. After all these years, Versus XIII looks like a mature version of Kingdom Hearts (In my opinion), and I don't think I want to play that either. There will have to be some serious improvements in the formula for me to even think about buying Versus XIII.

Taking years to develop a spinoff JRPG based in the same universe as your last game, and releasing it only after everyone has moved on is a great recipe for success.

Wakfu is very fun in it's current beta stages. Hopefully that F2P will rake in some nice dough for them.

I almost feel bad for SE. They kinda seem like a company who is still trying but keep tripping over themselves and not asking for help from fans. It doesn't seem arrogant to me, just more like they wish they had the competence to do it themselves.

"That game wasn't that good? Oh um, Well, how about this one?"

The new lead behind FFXIV is great. The game is really improving over its terrible launch. And my server is so active!

Yeah, I don't get it...they have such promising titles to release like FFvsXIII, KH3, and others I can't think of atm, but continue to say nothing regarding them, all-the-while releasing tons of spin-off crap that doesn't sell well!

And not too long ago they released a statement they'd be all for remaking some of their older more exciting FF titles if the demand for them was great enough. Its like, umm hello FFVII has most the world pining for a remake, and it wouldn't hurt to remake FFVI as well. Both of which are a goldmine, yet they continue to ignore us, as if we're being silent.

Also, sheesh...FFXIV...le sigh! I read the forums ever so often and its like they've given up. There are so many tiny fixes, that are mandatory for a successful MMO being asked about and requested, yet all we keep getting is a broken record response of "sometime in the future" when most of these fixes could be made in a day and hot-patched immediately.

I'm on the verge of giving up on SE, they just don't get it, and while I'm quite excited about Deus Ex, Tomb Raider & Hitman...those are still entirely Eidos developed regardless that SE owns them now...

@(Unverified) Yeah but remember this is Square Enix and most of their older game series are pretty damn dead and newer ones such of Kingdom Hearts rely on fillers because KH3 will not go into development until after FF VS. XIII bombs, in which cause people will be pissed cause by then Birth By Sleep Vol. 2 might be released as a game.

I was going to say:
"Here's a deal for you, SquareEnix, I'll throw some money your way if you stop being so greedy with your iOS games and lower their prices by like a half."

Then I went on the app store to make sure I wasn't making a fool of myself. Turns out some of their games are on sale for a week "to celebrate the release of Final Fantasy Tactics." It seems that most of their games are about 50% off right now.

Well played, SquareEnix. Expect some money come from me via Apple.
