Nomura considering 'HD technical test' for Kingdom Hearts anniversary

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance will finally make its hands-on debut at the Tokyo Game Show later this fall -- but does that news really do anything for you? In the latest issue of Japanese gaming mag Dengeki PlayStation (as translated by Andriasang), Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura explained that it's becoming difficult to get new players into the series with each new iteration. We get the hesitation -- we've played all the Kingdom Hearts games, and still can't follow a majority of their plots.

Nomura mentioned a plan to help bring new players into the fold: As a celebration of the franchise's 10th anniversary, he hopes to release an "HD technical test" of the series. Could that mean remakes of the first two, past-gen games? Maybe a teaser trailer similar to that of Final Fantasy VII HD which Square Enix will undoubtedly never follow up on? We'll try to squeeze some answers out of those lollygaggers during TGS next month.

Hey, how about KH3? I have a bad feeling it's going to be the next Duke Nukem...

@Captain Worcestershire It cannot be another Duke Nukem Forever since the game hasn't been ANNOUNCED yet. We know it's going to be released but the Nomura hasn't even announced it or even started to develop it. His team is still working on this game along with FF 13-versus in addition to this HD collection he might want to do (which is awesome in my opinion).

@auflame I'm just tired of all these side projects. Like a comment below says, there are only 3 games that really mattered in 10 years. I have high confidence that KH3 will be great, and if they release an HD remaster of the first 2 games, I'll definitely buy them. It's just I've been waiting for so long for news on the third one.

For the last time the KH team who have done the two main games are working of Versus XIII. Until Versus XIII is finished they will not start development on KHIII.

The next Duke Nukem is going to be Final Fantasy versus XIII. 5 years and counting. What, 1 game-play trailer? + 2 CGI trailers? No Tokyo Game Show appearance this year either. AHHH, the agony.

Hope Nomura doesn't take as long developing KH3 after Versus -,-

Ten years and only three games in the entire series that actually mattered. Ridiculous. I wouldn't mind HD remakes of the first two, though. I'm just not buying any more little spin-offs.

@littlepunkryo Non of the games are spin-offs technically. Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep is KH 0, Chain of Memories is 1.5, 356/8 days is 1.9, and this one 3D is 2.5. The only one I consider a true "filler" game is re:Coded which is a useless game except that it reveals more of the final secret scene from BBS.

Ill pass on this until all Side stories are on one disc. im getting pretty tired of waiting for an actual KH3 game.

Cause kingdom hearts 3d is called "dream drop distance" hence the name 3D and if they do a HD collection knowing Square they would give it a crazy name like that.

I'd be all for it, if they made KH I and II HD Remix for PS3. Especially if it was the Final Mix versions.

I'd be all for either one but i think it would be better for Vita. either way, and HD version of the first two would certainly get KH back on my radar. one of my favorite PS2 series but damn Square takes friggin forever to release anything now days.

I think it's difficult to follow the canon because its stretched out over every console used for the past 8 years

When will people stop calling it a Final Fantasy VII HD Teaser Trailer? It is part of the ending video for Crisis Core... I do think an HD version of Kingdom Hearts and FFVII would be pretty cool though.

You are wrong. It was a tech demo of the opening scene in Final Fantasy VII for the PS3. Never the less it was never intended as a full fledged remake.

I do believe they showed it off, but the exact same video was played as the final scene before the credits in Crisis Core. So was it a tech demo or just a play on videos because it is the end of the true story of cloud and then replays (in HD graphics) the beginning of FFVII. I watched that ending video in its (what seems to be 26 minutes of video) numerous times.

I am not denying that it was a Tech Demo, but they moved it from a Tech Demo to the ending of Crisis Core, which makes it an ending / intro video. I don't mean to offend you, but it is no longer just a Tech Demo if it was released as part of a production game.

well Crisis Core was a prequel to FFVII right? so why wouldn't having the intro to FFVII at the end of CC make sense? i think you're both right. it was a tech demo for PS3 but it fit Crisis Core's needs as well.

im hoping this is for an HD remix of the final mix Kingdom hearts. ill buy it in a heart beat. Also KH3 plz

The only thing that would get me back into the series is the American release of Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix (the only FM that really matters to me).

that would be sweet if they made hd remakes for kh1, kh2 and birth by sleep and put it in a collection like what konami's doing for metal gear solid

i would totally hop on that and who knows? maybe it mite attract even more fans and im almost positive it'd give square loads of moneys since kh is still very popular... i just hope those who gave up on the series after all the spin-offs will still be into it...

KH games are good, I'd love a HD re-release.

Hopefully it will be an HD collection of the Final Mix versions of 1, 2, Birth by Sleep along with COM and even 358/2 Days and Re:Coded for the heck of it :)

Also, am I the only one who's not that desperate for KH3? Aren't you satisied enough with 1, 2, Birth by Sleep (a terrific game which is basically KH0) and now Dream Drop Distance? Along with the spin-off titles COM, Coded and 358/2 Days? Do you people need to be reminded each time that the main KH development team is BUSY WITH FINAL FANTASY VERSUS XIII, THAT'S WHY KH3 isn't out yet. I for one am grateful that they at the very least whet our appetites with all these games. Keeps the series alive.

Anyone remember how they made an HD teaser of FF7 awhile back and did absolutely nothing with it? Expect the same thing to happen here.

RE: Coded was good now get a move on it and make 3 so we can finish this dam Xehanort saga. I spent years figuring out the dam plot T_T

If there was ever something I wanted to happen but never thought would, it would be losing my virginity...but an hd re-release of Kingdom Hearts is a close second :-p

This is what I hope happens:

KH1 and 2 Final Mix including Bith by Sleep all in HD available for PS3, XBoX, and Wii - U

Pretty much exactly what it sounds like, sadly :(

I'm seeing all this support for an HD port of I and II, but why not go all the way? Hell, let's get Re:CoM in there, that was on PS2 too. And maybe even Birth By Sleep. They brought over a PSP game for the MGS collection, surely they could do it for this. Even if it is just 1 and 2, I hope they'd at least be the Final Mixes. If they can at least do that I'd be more than happy.

I feel like I'm going to be out of college by the time KH3 gets released.

That said I've been replaying the original Kingdom Hearts and I've been thinking how it would be great if it was in HD and if they actually animated Sora's face in all the cutscenes.

But shouldn't Nomura be worrying about getting Versus 13 out the door before he plans anything else?

Guys, they're working on KH3 after a threshold is reached on VXIII. This is the last "side story", even though all these stories are important. Had somebody not played re:coded, how would they know why riku and sora were taking the mark of mastery exam? All stories are important and canon, just not necessarily on consoles.

Somehow, lollygaggers sounds like the PERFECT word to use with this game.

Here's another idea, Numora: focus on the games at hand. Finish Final Fantasy 13 Versus, then go work on Kingdom Hearts 3.
