NPD: Catherine sold 78K copies in July
42
No, the cake isn't quite a lie, but it did omit a key slice of information. Last week, Atlus trumpeted strong first-week sales for its eccentric puzzle game, Catherine, via a celebratory cake: "200,000 sold in the first week," it exclaimed. Try: 200,000 sold-in the first week (meaning shipped).
Following today's NPD report of video game sales in North America, you may have been curious as to why Catherine didn't appear among July's top ten best sellers. The lowest-ranked game, Mortal Kombat, had sold 85K units by month's end. Catherine came in below that, selling 78K copies in its first six days (still making it Atlus' biggest launch yet).
Another weird, well-received Japanese game, Shadows of the Damned, sold 14K during its second month -- proving that there will be no cake in hell.

It would be interesting to see sales numbers per console.

NPD uses actual sales numbers, vgchartz picks numbers out of the air and calls them factual.

@Reen Atlus "survives" because they don't recklessly invest hundreds of millions of dollars into games that may not come close to make their money back. They understand their audience better than most publishers, so they hit their sales expectations for most of their games and in the case of 3D Dot Game Heroes and Demon's Souls, they greatly exceed their expectations. Not every publisher needs Call of Duty-style sales figures to survive.

I am very angry with the people that didn't buy Shadows of the Damned it's such a (pun intended) damn good game.

I agree, but now comes the uncomfortable threshold where I have no desire to pay $60 for a game destined for the bargain bin. I absolutely do vote with my wallet on many games that end up being poorly received, but sadly SotD is not one of those games for me. Neither is Catherine for that matter.
I bought both No More Heroes games when they came out on Wii, and now they're coming to HD consoles. You're welcome. ;)

I caked through Shadows of the Damned. Even on Very Hard (or whatever they called it. Note you have to beat the game once to unlock very hard. Also if you're in it for trophies beating it on hard doesn't unlock normal and easy.) While a very fun[ny] game it was too easy.

This is one of the reasons the industry is going the wrong way. People complain that the same is selling more and want something different but then they don't back up buying those that sell "different" content.
Atlus, just to let you know I contributed to the cause. That makes me feel better for the industry.

@SilverPR Nerds don't like new things. They say they do but they really just want to play the same thing over and over again. It's why we get the same Call of Duty game every year.

No, one of the reasons the industry is going the wrong way is that companies (and people like you apparently) only care about games that sell millions.
If Catherine gives them a profit there's nothing to sneeze at. Plain and simple. Companies are about profit. It's not a frigging lottery.
Plus Catherine isn't exactly a good example for anything but that extremely quirky japanese games that make absolutely no sense unless you read up on it before buying it, (even then there's little sense) still sell.
If they made a profit that's all they deserved. This game will probably sell over time and through word of mouth. Never going to top the charts and there's no reason why it should.
Also, for the record, it sold half as well as it did in Japan. Japan had nearly 150k sales. So... you were complaining about what, again?

Right, I'm Anti-Japan because I'm supporting the game and simply because I said that people will, basically, misunderstand it.
You know, people that buy games by the hundreds of thousands. People that do take games by face value for first impressions. Generally, people NOT on a gaming site...
Take your idiocy elsewhere.
Thanks.

Shadows of the Damned is a reasonably good game. It's too bad it hasn't done well in sales.
The $60 pricetag with limited replayability is the kiss of death though for that title, it's just not something buyers will tolerate anymore (though they did more so with last gen's ps2 games).
I like it, but I'm lucky enough to have gotten it for $20 thanks to all the amazon promo stack-ups.

What killed that game was no advertising and EA just throwing it out there.
Hell tulhe week it came out caught me entirely off guard.
Kinda makes you wonder why EA even bothered with it Id they were just gonna throw it out there to die anyway.
(I bought it by the way)

200,000 copies were purchased by retailers, not by end consumers. Thus, Atlus sold 200,000 copies.

@2Slick - Retailers can sell back any unsold copies though, can't they? That was always my understanding.

With all the coverge for this game, I'm a little surprised by the sales numbers...this really shows how the gaming forums and mags can hype something...as Public Enemy says...Don't Believe the Hype. I wonder...is it really that good of a game...I've heard the puzzles are maddening?

As long as Atlus turns a good profit, they will continue to stay in business and support off-beat games like this. It doesn't have to be giant-killer to be a winner. If that was the case, there'd be no such business model as startup companies and sole-proprietorships.
