In July 2010, on the back of the newly redesigned Xbox 360 and shelf-clearing sales on the old model, Microsoft enjoyed one of its strongest months of non-holiday console sales ever. So while the Xbox 360 managed to best its console counterparts this July, it was also "the first month that the Xbox 360 saw a year-over-year decline since December 2009." That fact doesn't bother Microsoft product manager David Dennis, who told Joystiq, "If you actually jump back two years and look at what the typical run-rate is in the middle of the summer, it's pretty close. We're actually a little above where it was."
Considering the first Xbox console only enjoyed a four-year lifespan before the Xbox 360 arrived on the scene, Microsoft doesn't have a lot of institutional knowledge to rest on when it comes to maintaining a vibrant platform late in a console's lifecycle. But six years in, and the Xbox 360 has managed to reinvent itself thanks to Kinect. "Console transitions are expensive," Dennis said. "They're expensive for platform companies like ourselves and they're expensive for the third parties that have to learn new programming languages and learn new architectures."
After rocketing to 10 million Kinect units sold in just four months, we wanted to know if that momentum had continued. "We did not expect to maintain selling a million every ten days for the rest of its lifecycle," Dennis said. "But I think the normalized run-rate it's settled into through the normal course of the year, we've been pleased with the performance of it." We asked if casual, Kinect-focused XBLA games presented a challenge, educating mainstream consumers about downloading games online. "When you think of what kind of a perfect game you can do for Kinect that's the sort of perfect jump-in, jump-out type of party game, you think of Fruit Ninja." Dennis cited the Fruit Ninja pack-in with Gunstringer, which will ask consumers to redeem a code on Xbox Live to get their free game. "It's just a different way to open people's eyes" to the importance of Xbox Live, Dennis explained.
And in many ways, it's not just Kinect but Xbox Live that's kept the 360 young, Dennis said. "That connection to Xbox Live has really enabled us to add new features like Netflix, Hulu, and ESPN. As well as just refresh the dash so it feels like a new experience."
That new dash, which Dennis explains is being called simply "the new dash" internally instead of a separate name "because we didn't want it to stick like NXE did," is still coming this year, but details are scarce. "We have something fresher, what we think of as a more entertainment-focused dash, coming this fall," Dennis explained. "I can't give you an exact date, but I can tell you it's launching this year."
Similar to the NXE in 2008, the "new dash" "will have a beta program so there will be a gradual opening up and showing it, letting people get hands-on and play with it." Unlike 2008, this new dash has been under wraps outside of a short tease on-stage at E3. "I think one of the reasons we have not been saying as much about it is that, we sort of alluded to Live TV coming to the Xbox and that sort of core functionality is in the new dash and we don't really want to push that out with stuff we haven't announced yet."
That stuff, of course, is content. "We're still talking with lots of partners in various stages," Dennis said. "There's a lot of interest. People see what we've done with Netflix, what we've done with Sky in the UK. There are a lot of people that are very eager to work with us and others we may have to have longer, more textured conversations around rights management of content and things like that." As complicated as those discussion inevitably are, Dennis insists, "We're on track to deliver what we promised at E3 and that's to bring Live TV to Xbox this year."

A beta program just for the new dashboard?

@psnshe69mee For almost all of the updated dashboards, they have had a beta for it. Why? Fan feedback free of charge. They don't need to pay anyone in their business to look at the same screen over and over again when a regular consumer can look at it and say: Hey, this AD is way too big one my screen (which Microsoft will say: Ok.. and then? -- but you get the gist of it)

@GamingColt Here's some feedback already: Why is "games" the fifth tab over? If not the first tab, it should be the second tab.

The new dashboard actually looks quite attractive. Hopefully it's a bit more wallpaper friendly this time around.

I like the look of the new dashboard. I recently purchased a Windows Phone 7 device, so I'm getting used to the Metro UI. I don't mind seeing it making its way to Xbox 360 one bit.

Is it necessary to have yet another new dashboard? It seems like there is a new one every year. And what about our already purchased premium themes? Will those work, or will we have to buy them different ones?

@zack11190 New dashboards come to keep the ongoing customers not bored and feel refreshed when they look at their screen (or make it even more attractive and friendly to those looking for a console).

Microsoft at this point is behaving like hyperactive pre-teen girl, trying on new dresses every 2 months and "committing" to a "new look" every year, throwing out her entire wardrobe each and every time.
JUST PICK A DAMN THING AND STICK WITH IT.

And? That's actually good. Software UI isn't something you change every year. It's supposed to be there, in quick, convenient, intuitive ways that take as little effort as possible.
Overhauled UIs every single year tell me one (or all) of three things: they seem to think overhauling the UI is somehow a substitute for releasing a new console, they're so bad at design that they can't get it right despite repeat attempts, or they just fail to understand that UIs are meant to be as static as possible. Moving shit around just for the sake of moving it around only amuses people who enjoy someone dangling shiny keys in front of them for hours.

Other than the NXE, there hasn't been a huge overhaul. Last year we saw a refresh, but it was still more or less NXE, just cleaned up a little bit.
This is clearly a move to unify the Microsoft brand a little more. Windows 8 features a UI like this and the influence of Windows Phone 7/Zune is obvious.

Agreed. They actually seem to make it worse every time too. Sure, it's more flashy each time, but also less useable. For example, ever since they released the NXE I also use the mini-blades pop up menu to browse my friend list because the normal Avatar laden frend list is too bloated.

@PointlessPuppies In my opinion the XMB is horribly slow to load and it feels desperately outdated right now. I feel the PS3 and PSN could use a facelift.
MS brought out the NXE in 08 to improve the functionality of the old blades, which was becoming more and more difficult to find content on, and updates to NXE have been minor. Now that MS has Windows Phone 7 out there and Windows 8 on the way, it's unifying the UIs across all their platforms, which personally, I feel is a good move.
I'd take MS's approach over Sony's any day. They are a software company after all.

I'd rather take small UI tweaks over time (see Steam), than major overhauls every year. They're completely pointless.
The only time a UI should be changed is when there's a significant need to accommodate new features as they're introduced. As such, only last year's UI overhaul, which added Kinect functionality, should've been present. We didn't need the 2008 change and we don't need this one. The only real purpose for this is to make the UI look more like the Windows Phone 7 UI, which is nice but ultimately purely aesthetic and isn't needed at all.
Microsoft needs to understand a UI isn't something to be "refreshed" every year. They're menus. Making them flashier and moving items around really does't amuse anyone other than their ADD market. The only truly needed change was last year's given how it was custom-tailored for Kinect input, which was going to clunky at best had it only been shoehorned in there.

The was the blades from 05, NXE in 08 and now this new one in 11.
The only significant change that has happened to the UI has happened twice in 6 years.

@PointlessPuppies There's been ONE major overhaul in 6 years, soon to be a second! This dash looks like it will work far better than the last dash with Kinect, so provided it improves the service why shouldn't it be done?
Two overhauls in 6 years is not a lot, again, I'd take this over Sony's reluctance to change pretty much anything on the PSN. Honestly, the XMB is horrible. It pisses me off with how slow it can be when I want to check a message or compare trophies with people.

The Xbox Dashboard updates have been from necessity, to fit more content on a screen at one time. Also, Kinect has required an updating of designs. It's ridiculous to think that MS is spend cash to beautify our TV screens. It's because they have to, to get their content partners screen space and to get 100% Kinect functionality throughout the dashboard.

Fit more on screen? They've done exactly the opposite every time. The original blades with it's simple lists showed a lot of information at once. Even the original NXE showed more than it does now. Google up pictures of the NXE if you can't recall. The menus used to go further into the background, but that allowed you to see about 5 and a half options at once.
With the refresh they did last year the menus items are a now a bit bigger
and go more straight to the side. As a result you only see about 3 and a half menu items on screen at once.
I was down voted above, but I'm telling the truth. They literally make it less useable every time. They add more bling and make aesthetic changes at the expense of usability. We'll see how it goes this time, the pictures do
look somewhat promising. But I won't be shocked if it's worse yet again because that's been the trend.

I think MS and sony need to add a feature that allows the user to customize their dashboard. As more and more crap gets added it just gets more cluttered and very few people use everything.
I love the XMB but I never use PHOTOS, VIDEOS, NETWORK, and USERS and I only use Netflix in the TV SERVICES section. it would be great if I could just toggle the visibilty of all of that.

I think we are going to see a price cut next month to prep the space for the launch of a strong exclusive holiday season. I think the even as the Star War package is priced at $449, we are likely to see many retailers selling it for $399 with a promotional price cut (At least I HOPE!), which is why I think the Dec 31st launch date is false. I think Microsoft needs to look at Wii, and how Nintendo waited too long to cut prices or price things accordingly, in the case of the 3DS, and they are now suffering horribly. Microsoft Game Studio also needs to get off their arse and get busy on developing exclusive content, other than XBL. I’m excited about the upcoming update, as I suspect it will have a lot of goodness to it!

I for one like the updates to UI. They really reflect new trends in gaming. Ever since the streaming services were added I noticed more and more of my buddies spending extra time on their dash navigating, buying and streaming rather than in-game or turning their console off. This will help attract more gamers in general and make users more likely to visit certain areas of the system (like the marketplace).
I however hate that damn Zune program, it is like a plague. NO XBOX I JUST WANT TO USE THE INTEGRATED VIDEO PLAYER! I want my old video library back.
