Notch is getting married this weekend, and he's celebrating the, uh ... celebration of his love by giving free Minecraft to everyone ... who buys a copy of Minecraft!

Wait, let us explain. Everyone that purchases a copy of the game this weekend (not using a gift code), will receive a free gift code to give to whomever they want. Once you purchase a copy, the code will show up in your account on the Minecraft website.

After all, nothing says love like giving someone an insidious addiction.

First, I had to figure out how to generate Minecraft blocks from a JPG. Then I had to figure out how to import those blocks into an existing maps. And THEN I fired up Minecraft and took a shot.

In the end, I learned yet another completely pointless skill.

Being a completely open-ended game with no real goals or purpose, Minecraft relies on the player to find interesting things to do. This usually boils down to “Build a big house and maybe tunnel into the depths” or “Make it to the Nether and kill a Ghast.” Outside of that, I hope you enjoy grinding for colored blocks and then putting them together forever, because that’s all you’ll be doing here. Having to waste your precious time, creative spark and effort on making a game entertaining seems like a lot of effort for something that’s ultimately little more than a cutely styled plaything.

nspiration for creating music, paintings, sculptures or whatever else is fleeting… it only comes once in a while. So what possible reason is there for you to waste your spark/drive spending 300 hours building a 400-foot tall facsimile of the Reddit guy? Other than pandering to Reddit users for up-votes, of course. Congrats, your hard work has made another viral video to promote the game, more advertising dollars for Reddit and helped Notch acquire yet another solid gold house and rocket car.

though I don't find the hand that funny, or even that weird looking (c'mon we've all seen more messed up graphics) I really admire the commitment to actually build it in game for the article.

I need to play this more. Life is quite busy, though. Other games, girlfriend, work, upcoming school. What a great idea the creator had and I wish him well in the future.
