Obviously he's not talking about "care" in the same way you "care" about your dog. It's generally understood that when people talk about a company "caring" about them, they're talking about said company pushing out products and services with them in mind, striving for the satisfaction of that consumer.

In that light companies like Valve do "care" about their consumers, even if Gabe Newell isn't going to personally feel at a loss if I lost my dog last week at the mall (I didn't).

Good luck to them but these games are incredibly niche and would not sell well.

Most hardcore gamers pirate their Wii games anyway, shooting themselves in the foot.

This is how niche tastes get heard though. Also, EVERYONE else seemed to totally 1-UP Nintendo on the niche market this round. I mean A full blown honest to goodness VISUAL NOVEL for PSP is coming out!! Even their own DS is getting a proper JRPG in Solatorobo!

Really, not only did NoA drop the ball they don't seem interested in playing anymore!

@Reen As dead as the Wii is I don't think a bit of pirate fun means anything at this point. Nintendo of America has already said no thank you we don't want your money on these titles so have at it IMO.

Just wondering, is Operation Rainfall really a fan-driven initiative or is it an elaborate viral marketing stunt?

Because there's no info on who exactly is driving this initiative, which is why I'm skeptical about this. Going through the whois look-up on the site only brings up GoDaddy.com or something.

I'll say this, that is a good point...

If it wasn't for the fact that you and me both know NoA and their marketing team isn't THAT smart. This would be way too complex for them, since there is an obvious lack of kittens, carnival mini-games, or Nintendo characters to sell the game for them.

I have to be skeptical because it seems kind of ridiculous to have to buy something in order to generate interest in bringing something over, especially when the company in question made no mention of it.

Sega did this to us with Valkyria Chronicles 2, promising that a 3rd Valkyria game would be out if enough people bought Valkyria 2. I don't regret purchasing VC2 because at least Sega explicitly mentioned it and they delivered on that promise with VC3 (which has been very, very good).

This Operation Rainfall, however, I don't know who is organizing it and it seems too suspicious for me to buy into the whole "buy Final Fantasy to get Nintendo America's attention."

To be fair, the idea of buying Final Fantasy (the first game released in the series) is very possibly two-fold.
One is what was stated, to show that there is a strong interest in the RPG market here, and on the Wii as well.

Secondly, Final Fantasy was the brain-child of one Hironobu Sakaguchi. He later went on to create Mistwalker Studios, who is the developers for The Last Story (he's directing the game). So by buying Final Fantasy, you're also showing support for his products.

Okay, so I looked it up, there's OPRAINFALL.COM and OPERATIONRAINFALL.COM registered, both of which just forward to the main website (hosted on Blogger). They have a private registration, so there's really no telling who owns them (or even if the registrant of those domains are even part of this project). For all we know, it could be a viral setup.... They could use this to gauge interest in the games prior to release (if the rumor from OpRF is true, NSTC Xenoblade is done already, and Last Story is already being worked on).

Though, I don't think Nintendo has any of its domains through Go Daddy. The .com is through Network Solutions, the .net and .org are through Melbourne IT, etc...
(though, seems odd they're all over the place like that, too...)
... I suppose that could be part of the setup, too.

I can understand the first point. The 2nd point, however, is untenable largely because it seems to be too much of a stretch to connect The Last Story with Final Fantasy. If anything, asking people to purchase Final Fantasy only encourages the idea that legacy games are profitable and that remakes are equally profitable. That doesn't improve the odds of Last Story nor any of the other JRPGs in question in crossing the damn pond.

The problem with relying on the European market to provide Nintendo America with an incentive to bring it over is sort of a 50-50 gamble. I say this because Europe has traditionally had a greater exposure to Japanese manga and anime whereas the US has been much more resistant to accepting Japanese manga and anime and it required the likes of Sailormoon and DBZ to break down those barriers.

It just seems too weird to tell people to go through all this purchasing shenanigan when Nintendo America has said absolutely nothing about it.

I'd much prefer that a company be frank with us, like what Sega did with VC2 and promising to deliver on VC3 (which they did).

If Nintendo America wants to ask us how much interest there is for the JRPGs in question, the least they could do is ask the various blog sites or even GameInformer or something to poll the user base. Even asking about it on their own blog would have been much more preferable than going through this roundabout BS.

It very well could be company-driven.
But if it is, it was VERY WELL DONE.
I'm one of the many that saw the thing unfold from the very beginning. People talk about "doing something about this" on forums and facebook groups, but no one really doing anything about it.
Then suddenly someone decided to take the head (I believe it started in neogaf? Or am I wrong? Forgot which site) and actually do something about it. Then the letter writing, facebook spamming, and project rainfall site building began.

It looks completely legit considering that they didn't just outright start with a typical corporate "Pay money here!" strategy. It just built up into this.
We can't really confirm if whoever started all this wasn't working for Nintendo (unless you wanna' bug the head which can be found on facebook and on the forum sites he started in), but if he was: he did it perfectly and you gotta' congratulate that kind of effective viral marketing.

If he did, it's his job, and he did it beautifully. The man should get a raise.

I agree that it seems to be very well organized. The leadership's secrecy in all this just seems to compound the matter. If it really is a corporate stunt, I'm of the opinion that it is a fairly annoying sort of corporate stunt. Especially since they are now asking for people to buy Final Fantasy on the Virtual Console to "persuade" Nintendo America.

Of course it doesn't help that my Wii no longer reads disks due to a fault and worse than that my PS3's YLoD'ed and makes me want a good long RPG even more...

It's probably going to get the same response from Nintendo like the past couple of (same) letters. So far they're already set on seeing how it performs in Europe. I'll be importing it, but as far as I'm concerned they are dead set on their current schedule.

To be honest; I don't know how buying a bunch of copies that only costs $8 from a hugely established franchise would make Nintendo feel better about releasing 3 brand new non-established games that will costs $50.

There's a fine line between petitioning and groveling. It's time to move on. She doesn't love you; paying for her new IUD and letting her borrow your car because her boyfriend's is in the shop isn't going to show anyone "what a great guy you are".

Well the first point was to get Monado (Xenoblade) to the States (with amazon preorders).
This one is for Last Story. Since it is the creator is the creator of the original Final Fantasy games. They couldn't do a preorder for this one since it had no State-side preorder set up.

...I have no idea what they'd do for Pandora's Tower.

Oh, I was under the impression it was becoming an "all or nothing" kind of thing and this was still about Xenoblade. I take back what I said, then.

However, I do think that NOA has demonstrated time and time again that they simply don't care (Reggie would certainly be happy to sweep in for the photo op if they ever decide to localize any of these for their own reasons and pretend like it's "for the fans", but I think everyone's slowly beginning to learn better). Well, at least we can finally put to rest that timeless fanboy myth that Nintendo is everyone's pal whereas MS and Sony are soulless corporations. And honestly? It's about time. As of late, Nintendo has made a fortune off of the goodwill of gamers with little to no reciprocation.
