iam8bit founder Jon Gibson says the opening of the new Super iam8bit art show in Los Angeles' Echo Park neighborhood this week is really about a "rebirth." Iam8bit is not only premiering over 100 new pieces by artists inspired by old-school video games, but it's also showing off a brand new gallery space, and reinventing itself as a company.
"It was just me before, by my lonesome for so many years," says Gibson. "And now I have three partners and we're all equal, and we're all taking charge." Taylor Harrington, Amanda White, and Nick Ahrens have now officially joined the company, and the group will all work together on the art collective's various projects.
The new space will be helpful as well -- iam8bit originally found it while putting an event together with Capcom, and eventually leased it themselves. Gibson plans to use it for a number of different functions. "It's so big," he says. "We can do shows here, we can have concerts, we can do movie screenings."
The Super iam8bit show has a book associated with it, currently available in the gallery's storefront, open for business Thursdays through Saturdays in LA. And the art show itself is open for the next month. If you're not planning to be in Echo Park any time soon, you can browse through and see shots from last night's opening gala (including a wall-sized Galaga machine, Drew Skillman's retro Kinect hack, and a musical appearance by chiptune artist Leeni) below.

But isn't that the crux of the hipster aesthetic?

Ha, it is. Not to mention all of the mediocre screenplays they've written and have never been bought by a single studio, therefore making the studio execs totally blunt to understanding true, indie art. But it's okay, they're dream of making it to Paris will come in due time...

I'm still waiting to see how the new issue of Juxtapoz wants me to answer that.

Who said these artist didn't grow up playing this stuff too?
How exactly do you see gamers? Gamers come from all walks of life. So these artist love to draw shit they like, If they add their own take so be it.
You also shouldn't hate on People getting a chance to show their art and as well as what they love.
Also on a side note, hipsters don't always equal artist and visa versa. You people really need to stop generalizing shit.

@Dog Dawg Truth. I like a lot of the takes on some of these series. Though I'll agree that the headline pic for this story was ill-picked (There were a lot more amongst the 64 pics taken that encapsulate what this - and the past shows - are/were comprised of, better) even those pics aren't hideous. People bandy about the word hipster too much nowadays. Really, very little of this is anything that I'd call true hipsterdom. They may be like, pretentious arthouse kids or whatever, but honestly, most of this stuff smacks of effort too much to be labeled "hispter".
That said, I love a lot of the "interpretations" of older series that I grew up with, there seems to be a lot of creativity present, and a personal touch to a lot of stuff (especially a lot of the 2-D paintings/drawings). I especially enjoyed the Ice Climber painting in the preview from last week, and #61, the arcade hodgepodge with "Rise From Your Grave" in the middle. The Eggplant Wizard sculpture in #51 is awesome, too.
As far as your comment about generalizing shit, I've just chalked it up to gamers being gamers. Check out @PandoTeam's comment, and that pretty much sums it up, imo. People that consume shit feel somehow entitled to bag on everything, and gamers seem like especially rude little babies about things that are outside of their predefined box.

@PandoTeam You don't need an answer to that, because you've already explained it. People who do nothing but consume seem to feel entitled to bag on everything, and gamers especially, seem to be malcontentious.

Should have used a different picture for the front image. There are some great works in this gallery.

@Prince David Yeah, isn't that the truth. They should've used a pic of the Ice Climber painting that they used in the preview earlier in the week (or last week, I can't remember), I loved that. Or perhaps the 3-D/2-D Zelda 1 sculptures. =)

I went to this last night, thought it was great though not without problems. I was a bit peeved that a number of the best pieces had already been bought before the general public were let in. There were a TON of press outlets there, which is fine, but not when they take up space in the gallery doing interviews that they could've done in the hour and a half before people were let in. Also I'm nowhere close to being an art connoisseur, but a lot of the pieces seemed ridiculously overpriced (My only frame of reference is how much similar pieces go for at Gallery 1988 and Gallery Nucleus).
All that said, I did have a lot of fun. The organizers were incredibly friendly, all the attendees were great to talk with (except for the ones who looked like they missed their clubbing stop), and those roombas were awesome. Plus I got to meet Andrew Pfister, which is an event unto itself.

Modern Art is everything that Art ever was before, with more options. It's only as limited as your understanding.
