Playing games online can be a mixed bag of fantastic and horrible experiences, depending on what you're playing. If you're lucky, the game you're interested in has an active, helpful community of friendly people, eager to help new players become members of the neighborhood. If you're unlucky, however, your online gaming experience may take a decidedly different, far less enjoyable form.
Nintendo, seemingly aware of the perils of interpersonal interaction online, have filed a patent for a "Massively Single-Playing Online Game," which aims to provide all of the benefits of a persistant online world, without any of the drawbacks associated with other people. The general idea is that a player's actions will affect various gameplay mechanics for all other players, much like in traditional MMOs, however the players will never actually interact with each other. A player may build themselves a house in a persistant world, for instance, and while other players can find the house, they cannot find its creator.
The Big N also gave economic examples, wherein a player's actions may increase or decrease the scarcity/value of an item for all players across the board. NPC interaction was also pointed to as a way for players to communicate with each other indirectly, with computer-controlled characters acting as messengers.
It's important to remember that technology companies like Nintendo file patent applications on a fairly regular basis, and that this application's existence doesn't necessarily mean that we'll be seeing this kind of gameplay implemented into anything anytime soon. It's also important to remember that a Pokemon game using this technology would be off the chain.

Although I've been clamoring for a real Pokemon MMO, this sounds pretty dull!
2-4 Player online multiplayer is far more alluring.

Uh...why?
Is there really any reason to implement this other than to PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!?! Gameplay-wise it doesn't seem to improve anything.

I'm all for single-player games (I can't stand multiplayer, especially MMOs), but a MSO game? I see that working for Pokemon and Animal Crossing, and that's about it, but if this is Pokemon, online, in a "massive" setting, wouldn't a MMO Pokemon game be the one thing a lot of fans would absolute DIE for? Hell, it may be the one MMO that would turn the tide for my hatred of them.

I'd build a house and then delete the door when people went in, just like I do to my sims.

@Rocket Raccoon True, I hope they have other players be represented as orbs like in Fable 2.

Kinda reminds me of Guild Wars and how it has "single-player" sections. ...only this is worse and kinda backwards in that it takes all the negatives (drops get stolen by other people) and none of the positives (you can't even see the freaking people!? Are you kidding!?).
Although, I guess if you think about it in terms of Animal Crossing, it kind of works, but is still not a very good idea.

Yeah, I don't think I see the real benefit to this. Unless they come forth with some sort of ground breaking idea or game to go along with this, I can see this concept going nowhere fast.
I mean, if there's no interactivity(I'm not sure "Indirect messaging" counts.) between players, Big N may as well have designed the houses to be a certain way, or adjusted the prices, etc. It's not like anyone would know the difference.

It's similar to animal crossing then? That's okay, but I can't deny that if animal crossing were fully online I would enjoy it a lot more. As long as they finally make a pokemon console game, similar to the handheld ones, but in 3-D. Count. Me. In.

I think Nintendo wants to keep Pokemon portable. It seems they value the ol' "meeting up with in real life with friends to trade pocket monsters" thing.

@The Only Girl I remember the days when you needed to have a link cable to do that, or jam your gameboys together so you could get your mystery gift. Aah the memories.

I personally would enjoy this immensly, depending on the game of course. I love the mmo's, but there are times i'd just love to play in a larger universe than the console, without having to deal with idiots, which is what i seem to find on every mmo now a days. Not to mention after losing everything in wow after soloing to level 80, i quit. Too many hackers on the big games, and frankly i prefer to play alone now, or have friends over for console gaming. But that is just me, and i realise that many of you, (okay, most of you) really enjoy the interaction of other people. I wish there was a version of wow that was single player, that had all the elements of the online wow, and not just the silliness of the one that is out there.

@MemZ It isn't and MMO it's an MSO. MMO stand for massively MULTIPLAYER online game MSO stand for massively SINGLE player online game.

As mentioned by other people on other webistes. Yes, yes you are.
Liking the idea of econimc values being changed. I also imagine it to be infused with Animal Crossing like many others.
However i cant' help thinking of a Minecraft Server but playing in such a way it means your partners never online, but being able to see there creations... That and all the damage they managed to cause whilst exploring your creations...

Eh, several games have systems very close to the one described. Hell, Demon's Souls online mode was essentially a massively single-player game, with everything shifting about depending on various player actions. Except it was better since on top of altering the world and leaving messages/rumors/tricks behind, players could choose to interact with others as well by summoning them into their world or invade others.

Eh, someone tried owning a patent FOR MMOs, and has even tried suing companies with it. Patent Laws are very... very f$%^ed up, so you can pretty much patent a bunch of crazy talk if you wanted and sue someone if they use something close to it.
Hell, Bethesda is trying to sue Mojang over the fact that their game is called "Scrolls", as if they own the word.

Part of the fun of playing online is playing with actual people. I don't really know where Nintendo is going with this...
And it's just a patent also. It doesn't really mean anything will come out of it or if it does, it may not be any time soon.

"gamers" are so boring, I swear they lack any imagination.
A mix of Zelda and Animal crossing would work great with this.
The goal is to roam the labyrinth wilderness for resources to trade and improve your plot of land and house.
Other players can see your house and land, and leave messages and what not. Have the ability to send requests to team up and roam together in a small band.

I think you got some bad information. Even worse that you assumed it was true and gave out a backhanded retort to everyone else for not having imagination. If anything, you are victim of an over active imagination in this instance.

I think they're just scared of what could happen, especially in a competitive game like pokemon (if it is that). I know even though I can mute I've heard more than my fair share of curses and racial slurs aimed at me, and that was just for beating people on halo. I can't imagine what would be said if I beat someone with a pikachu, let alone the abuse female gamers would get, as there are many female pokemon players. It's horrendous with any other game.
