Copy and paste last two words, paste it in beginning of sentence, delete the originals.

But it was a good reference.

The cloning started awhile ago, for example, under XBL Indie games the top three downloaded games in order:

Total Miner
Fortress Craft
Castle Miner

Try to guess what those are copied from.

Castle Miner can't have been anything but a rip-off of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. There's no way at all. Ever. Not possible. Couldn't happen.

"Indie Circle"?? Sounds like somebody on the outside didn't get approval from the circle. Seriously how many games from the "indie circle" could you easily say inspired a lot from other games.

I have played and enjoyed a lot of blatant clones. They were better and cheaper. Played a ton of KC Munchkin as a kid. Was I just supposed to get ripped off by the 2600 version of Pac Man?

Get me the best product out there or die.

The reason it's cheaper though, is because someone else already did all the research and math to create the original game from nothing. It's a lot faster, cheaper, easier, to make a chinese knock-off once the actual original product exists. And when it comes to non-physical/tangible products, knock-offs arent made with cheaper material (as there are no materials).

No. It takes a lot to program a game. If somebody borrows some ideas and improves them that's called evolution. If game developers stopped stealing ideas we would be still playing Pac-Man. (Actually Pac-Man probably stole a lot of stuff.)

It's all evolution that makes the awesome games we play today. You can pick apart any great game and it really has been done before. The great games just do it better.

The gaming industry has always had this type of problem. I also see it on more than just cloning. We have always seen mimic games of certain themes. Sandbox games such as GTA, and first person shooters like Half-Life have their fair share of mimicking titles. These gaming genres encompass a vast playing style where other devs can follow the basic theme and still create their own individual type of game such as the Saints Row series.

Cloning is just ridiculous where it is almost like at a elementary school test. The fellow dev right behind the creators of the original game is copied but its created in a crudely drawn fashion on some crayon with difference in the game and sparkly effects to make it look different.

Gaming in is now like the movie industry where individual ideas are few and far between. The new exciting games or ideas that do come out are copied the hell off and that type of game gets milked.

If Minecraft is a clone, it makes FortressCraft into a clone of a clone, which is far more sinister.

I wonder what it would take for an affected company to win a legal battle and get something like royalties off the sales of the offending game.

@Prestidigitator

It was easier when games were similar like with Pac Man and Tetris. Games are too complicated now to be similar enough for a court case to be successful. There will never be another legal battle won over stealing game ideas again.

He says "Clone" and I say Evolution. It's the nature of the business (any form of entertainment really). Companies will always look to other companies/games/past successes for inspiration. Some of the most popular games/franchises today are mostly evolved versions of previous games/franchises. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is just an evolution of Wolfenstien 3D (yes, yes, many Evolutionary steps in between, but hopefully you get the point).

If this guys game is really that good, consumers will recognize that and purchase it. If he's worried about losing sales to "clones", he just needs to come up with something innovative enough to throw off the competition. It's not easy - but that's what game design is all about - it should NOT be easy.

Fruit Ninja: Ripped off by Fruit Slice
Flight Control: Ripped off by Air control
Plants vs Zombies: Ripped off by PvZ
Bejeweled: Ripped off by ...too many to name
Angry Birds: Ripped off by Angry Farm

Seriously, these are just the games I know about, there are probably dozens more of games I havent even heard of. But considering many of these game are free anyway on the android store or other archives as it is I dont understand how any of them are making any money anyway. I mean even with the ad supported stuff all you have to do is turn off your wifi or internet function and they dont even show.

He should of also brought up FortressCraft on XBLA. A ripoff so blatant nobody will deny it, on a system that is about to get THE REAL GAME. Oh, and of course, the extra insult to injury, it is the best selling XBLA title to date. Doing better than Castle Crashers, Braid, Splosion Man, and Bastion, all titles far more deserving of that honor of top seller. But alas, those games are original, and well made, so clearly they can't be the best sellers. Instead they were constantly beaten by rereleases of old games, and now flagrant IP theft.

When a game is already a rip off (look up Infiniminer) I don't care about the middle or end games in the cycle. Those 2 can copy each other till the cows come home... they're both just clones of Infiniminer.

There's a huge difference between taking inspiration from a game and simply stealing it that most of the people commenting here don't seem to understand.

I see the "Minecraft is an Infiniminer clone" argument being thrown around a lot, but the way I see it Infiniminer was much more a competitive game and much less of a creative game, and obviously Minecraft (more so at the start) took the creative route. Yes, they're both have blocky worlds you can build in, but the gameplay differences are night and day.

With Ninja Fishing and Radical Fishing, the gameplay has been virtually untouched. The key differences are a theme swap and replacing shooting the fish with slicing them (i.e. the Fruit Ninja segment).

Ninja Fishing is in no way "an evolution of the genre." A genre does not consist of a set of very specific mechanics. This is not Call of Duty vs Battlefield, this is blatant theft.

What Gamenauts did was cash in on a small teams hard work. From how I understand it, a small group of peoples livelihood relies on Ridiculous Fishing (the official iOS port of Radical Fishing) and Gamenauts has already almost guaranteed a major dent in their sales. I really cannot believe some of you can stand behind them and even berate Boyer and the developers for saying something about it. That's just unbelievable to me.

One last thing: please read this: http://aeiowu.com/an-open-letter-to-gamenauts/ It's an open letter from the artist of Ridiculous Fishing (which is the official iOS port of Radical fishing). If you can still support Gamenauts after reading that, than... I don't know. Just wow.

HELL NO. It's because their shit will get ripped off before they get to market. Quit your QQing and learn2business.

If you can't compete with someone who is 'ripping you off' then you might want to consider why you're no longer able to innovate.

To those bashing Minecraft: Notch (the creator of Minecraft) has come out multiple times saying that he knows he copied aspects of Infiniminer. But the thing is, he's taken the basic concept and gone so much farther with it, adding a survival aspect, crafting, and many more features that make it unique to Infiniminer. He also prefers to think of his game as more of an "homage." It's a little like how there are a ton of 2-d platformer games that have many similar mechanics to the Mario games, but add or change so many features that the only thing being copied is the basic concept, which tons of developers do anyways.
