I tried this during beta.

The review understates, SO MASSIVELY, the amount of handholding at start. You have a campaign to teach you how to build. To teach you how to move units. To teach you how to gather wood. To teach you how to gather food. To teach you how to gather stone. To teach you how to build armies. To teach you how to build a town center.

Seriously, and there's NO way to skip this and get to a real game. I never made it past all these BS tutorial "missions" to see if the rest was worthwhile because the time investment required was ludicrious. I've been playing Age of Empires since the first installment, and I figured out how to play in one or two sessions when I was in FIFTH GRADE. No one wants to sit through this crap.

And let me add that the campaign actually UNLOCKS THE TECH TREE. Yeah, you don't just get your civilization's tech to go and wreak havoc with - they make you sit down and think "Oh, good, I beat a mission, now should I get the Wheel, or Polytheism?"

@MasterYogurt
This was a huge pain in the beta, but actually the full game does have the option to skip the tutorials.

I've been really enjoying the game, I think people have been judging it very harshly and assuming it's "dumbed down" based solely on the graphics and that's really not the case.

My only problem is with the pricing structure, it's just far too expensive. If the retail codes gave you access to the four civilizations and the bulk of the current content, it'd be fine. But instead you get practically nothing for totally insane prices.

That's the problem with people playing open betas. They can't seem to get it through their thick skulls that some of the things they didn't like will probably be changed by the time the final release comes around, and then go around parroting outright lies that haven't been true in months.

I didn't NOT enjoy the gameplay, I just couldn't get through its abhorrent pacing to get to an actual game. For me, it was like replaying the Plants vs. Zombies campaign - absurdly slow and the artificial limits on available tech, doled out at an absolute drip of a pace, preventing you from actually enjoying the wealth of strategy and fun the game had to offer.

Even with a tutorial being skippable that doesn't help the slow accumulation of tech being a game I don't want to play at all.

I want to love the strategy portion, but the Farmville portion won't get out of my way. And though they may have fixed the tutorial they haven't fixed THAT much larger, underlying problem.

@MasterYogurt I actually didn't think they were bad at all. They give you objectives and you can complete them quickly, if you poses the knowledge to play. For RTS tutorial missions, they are extremely quick and streamlined, you can easily ignore all the help texts and get on with playing. It does suck that their mandatory, but it also sucks that you have to play beginner zones in MMOs

"The same can't be said for the game's Hanna Barbera-inspired visuals. Even my wife, who, mind you, spends more hours than she or I would care to admit absorbed in casual games, stopped by my office while I played just to say how awful she thought the graphics were. Just a heads up developers -- she's your target audience."

Eh, if that's one of the major "problems", whatever, the graphics look kinda nice to me.

@BrianH Yeah, I love how inexperienced and/or wannabe developers always hold their girls' opinions on a much higher ground it should. As if there wasn't any playtesting on that demographics. "my wife think it's ugly, so it surely is". I see that every day. What I don't see, though, is people putting that on reviews!

Age of Empires II is still an excellent game. It's unfortunate that I'd rather pay $20 to Microsoft to re-release it with the original graphics and updated online support than play this new version.

That said, I fully intend to check it out tonight. It all depends on how much free content there is. $20 per civilization seems steep to me: $5-$10 would be more appropriate, as half the fun of AoE is selecting "Random Civilization" when you start a game.

Regardless, nice review. I'll be checking it out!

@ilduce620

Each Civ is actually a campaign (see my GAAAAHHH above) so you actually get stuff but a casual person is not going to pay 20 bucks for a campaign.

And a hardcore player has better things to do, too.

So no one will.

@MasterYogurt Well, it there's a reasonable campaign included for $20, that's better.

Still, I played lots of AoE II back in the day. I would always play in a group against the AI, and while others would go "Random Civ," I'd always play as the Byzantines. This kind of model, releasing individual civs slowly over time, really rubs me the wrong way because I'm used to having a good number of civs available, where on Day One, you get your choice of two.

And over the next 6 months, it'll be moved up to four. In AoE II, there were THIRTEEN to choose from. I guess that's really what makes me the most angry: only having two civs to choose from, with no substantial increase in sight.

Exactly how I played too. I mostly played AoE 1 and Myth and I consider races like fighting game characters. They have similarities but different playstyles, and finding one that matches your predisposition is key. Having only two races is, to me, like having only Ryu and Guile in Street Fighter 2, with more characters coming later - it's a silly decision.

I want to sit down, build some awesomely cheap Hittite catapults, take down the Romans, and not care about campaigns, storylines, or building my Farmville town.

@MasterYogurt Damn straight. The Street Fighter analogy is apt.

I got to play it some last night. The old AoE mechanics are definitely in there, but until I can play PvP or an old-style "Skirmish" mode, it'll be hard to really know to what extent this resembles the old game. I never played much of the single-player campaigns, instead focusing on random skirmishes with the AI, or "comp stomp" matches. I'll stick with it for a bit!

Age of Myth was pretty awesome. I'm sorry you missed it (it didn't have a numeral so it was sorta easy to overlook.)

This is one of those games people definitely need to experience before making assumptions based on the art style (as with most games, say, Jet Set Radio). I was in the beta, and honestly did not have high expectations going in, although I'm a huge fan of AOE2. After a month of playing and learning all the mechanics of the game, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

I didn't know joystiq until Massively and WoWInsider became sub-domains of the site. I'm not sure who the site is trying to compete with, but the review is really weak on both content and commentary. It's not clear why the game got 3.5 stars either.

AoEO basically a 10+ year old game that is mashed up with the worst attributes of facebook games. The emphasis isn't even on what was a good game when it was originally released, but is instead on unlocking tech tree levels through grinding.

I can't complain about anything in this game, it's free to play and if I ever want more content I can purchase booster packs. At least I can decide if I like the game before I begin paying for it.

Haven't played the game yet, but when talking about the graphics I can't say much else than that is just a matter of taste. Me and my friends all love the graphics simply because it fits the genre and type of game perfectly.

My g/f doesn't play any games more or less, but she got intrigued when she saw AoEO just because of the graphics, so while some might not like it, a lot of people do. In the end, shiny colorful cute things draws a lot of casual players from facebook or wherever, and they are prepared to shell out the cash to make their little city even cuter so honestly I think they made a good choise.

That being said, if this graphics had been used for say SC2 I would have raged, but again it has more to do with the type of game it is imo.

I played some in the beta. I didn't like the presence in my town of the cash shops, which you had to have and couldn't do anything with. I didn't like the small maps. Having played AoE from the get go, I wanted a great big map I could conquer, instead you get tiny highly predictable maps with discrete goals. This may not be true later on, but I stopped playing before I got to the later on part.

My main impression was that the whole reason this game existed was to get your first $20, then your second $20, and all your $5 and $10 contributions in between at the cash shops. I have no strong dislike of cash shop games, this one just seemed so blatant though that I would have to say, here, take my credit card and call me when you're done to even start to play it. I would have preferred to pay $50 up front and get the whole game, which I might have gone for, but the scam of F2P when it is actually pay to win, really annoyed me.

The graphics are cute and enjoyable. The game play itself is entertaining.

The review doesn't mention that the average RTS and AoE player will get raped relentlessly in PvP. I played three matches and quit forever after I lost the third match to a guy who zerg rushed me with peasants...
