The problem with DotA as an e-sport: It's so boring to watch.

well, some people think chess as an exciting game. Maybe the pace isn't really up to your taste?

It's funny, because I don't ever see an actual act of checkmate in a high-rated game. Good chess players know when to resign when there is no escaping checkmate.

@pizzafreak360 Same thing is true of Starcraft, the game is practically never played to completion, just until one player knows they are going to lose and says "gg." They call it "typing out" which I find humorous.

It just needs some charismatic commentators and it'd be much more exciting.
Watching Starcraft replays is pretty boring as well until you add Tastosis. Then suddenly, OMGWTFTHISISAWESOME!!!

Speed Chess at competitive levels makes this look like grass growing.

I don't understand the appeal of MOBAs one bit.

I've only played DOTA like a few times way back when it was first released in Warcraft 3 and for me this doesn't seem like a fun game to watch. I started one of the videos and they took 10 minutes just picking players. I guess I'm just used to the fast action of fighting game streams.
I'm still going to buy this game, though. Because of watching that video I downloaded LoL and checked out the tutorial.

Including what was a flaw in the Warcraft 3 engine such as "denying" has to be one of the most embarassing mistakes HoN and Dota 2 have made. It does not make the game more competitive, it just draws away from the other aspects of the game that should be focused on such as team coordination. This game is only an upgrade to Dota on a visual level. Maybe some people like unnecessary complexity, but I'll stick to playing LoL.

@platypusrme could not agree more. Denying makes the game look more complex, but really detracts from the champ vs champ aspects of the game and also destroys any chance of a comeback if you screw up early on. Making a game more complex and "hardcore" doesn't make it a better game or e-sport, it just makes it less accessable. I'll try DOTA 2 when it hits beta, but these archaic gameplay mechanics and the hostile community will probably turn me back to LoL.

Denying is not an embarrassing mistake.

For newer people being pitted against players who can creep control well does make the game have a harder entry point, but for good players playing against each other it adds more depth to the game.

@yami5ct And the LoL community isn't hostile? One of the reasons I stopped playing LoL!

@sinergy Sure, LoL has some typical poor sport internet idiots, but I've found it alright for the most part. Much better than the DotA community who've in my experience have been very elitist, we don't want your kind here, types. I much prefer plain poor sports to elitist ones.

It makes it possible to have a more one-sided game, which is completely unnecessary and takes away from the actual champion battles. It takes no extra skill to kill your own minions, so don't try to pretend it's only for the "elite" players. Dota was filled with countless unnecessary features. If you really think it makes you "pro" for thinking they make the game more "in-depth" then just keep playing HoN.

Is there some high level rock-paper-scissor choices going on, or are these two just slow?

Wow, i would of expected some improvements. All it is right now is the Dota with a new coat of paint.

Wow, this was so incredibly dull. I've had more fun matches against AI (in another dota-style game).

I'm very curious as to how they are going to ease in new players. I've played a ton of League of Legends, but trying to learn a whole new set of champions that others have known for years and years, especially with new items and whatnot, isn't easy.

I had a couple friends from school who played DotA, but I never got into it, so pardon my ignorance. How does the game work: the littler units spawn and attack buildings and such automatically while you control a hero to defend them by attacking their players (PvP) and their littler units to ultimately destroy all their structures?

@FROMtheASHES777 Yes. There's a bit more to it, but you pretty much got the general idea of it. (you level up as you play and gain new/more powerful abilities. This is on a per-game basis, everyone always starts at level 1. There is also an in-game store that you can buy items from using gold that you get from killing enemies. Also on a per-game basis)

Hmmm. I was expecting more. I am a huge DOTA fan, but I was expecting a much larger overhaul, and at least a new voice. Its still the unreal voice they are using here when you start scoring killing sprees (3 kills). Hmmm, I really don't like the graphics of HoN (too shiney for me), but HoN seems to be further ahead than Dota 2.

Never played League of Legends, heard it was for kids really, but I think I may have to give it a try.

Oh, and if they have voice chat you can bet I'll be squelching the entire Dota 2 community as they all tend to act like ass-hats and keyboard warriors.

They've just taken dota and imported a less childish cell shading version of LoL GUI over the top of it. Not much change at all.

Yes, I thought the same too. Everyone was saying "DotA 2 will blow all other MOBA games out of the water but I just saw a slower paced HoN with LoL's graphical style. The commentators were really bad also...

I don't understand why they don't have casters for these replays, it would really help new players get what's going on.
