1st person shooters are the most popular genre on many platforms not just the Xbox. It has a diverse library you just need to actually look for the titles. As for old school scrolling beatemup/ arcade shooters games have you tried the XBLA marketplace?

And anyway get with the times! Games arent going to stay old school forever! Gaming is becoming more and more popular in the west so it will ultimately lead to great change. I dont know how it is over there but it sounds like you are stuck in traditional ways.

I do own a 360; however, I hate what Microsoft has done to the games industry e.g. killing Rare, graphics over gameplay, nothing but shooters (almost), absolutely no brainwork required for games, downloadable content opposed to unlocking things in games with your hard work etc. Therefore this news actually makes me really happy. Microsoft are such a greedy company with quite frankly I wish the same would happen to them in other countries.

@conman30 Microsoft is not a greedy company. All companies are just greedy ;). By saying MS is greedy you say it like the others are there for charity ;). This is not true, as all companies look for the highest turnover for the littlest investment.

Whether it is Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Disney... it doesn't matter they all do it. Infact if you talk about Graphics over Gameplay, Sony usually has a hand of that. Not that they don't make good games, but during Console launches they flaunt numbers as if they mean something. They did it with the PSone vs the Saturn, the PSTwo vs the Dreamcast and the PSthree vs the 360. The numbers don't mean anything but they do bring it like "OMG LOOK AT THIS NUMBER! SEE HOW MUCH THE COMPETITION SUCKS!"

All companies are like that, and do shit like that. The best thing you can do is just get used to it, and only buy the console which has the games you like. I think Rare is mostly in a drought as they are working on the Launch titles for the Next Xbox (this usually takes a few years, and they did the same with the first Xbox, after the Conkers Remake, Rare basically moved the two Xbox titles to the 360 and still needed 2 years of work on them).

Since these titles where called bland they now are taking a bit longer. While PD:0 wasn't that bad in multpilayer (was alot of fun even, but people only looked to GFX to put it down) and Kameo was a great title but again was held up to ridiculous standards. I mean take Banjo Nuts and Bolts, a really nice game, but people had such huge standards of it that it was a let down on that alone.

But I do agree that MS needs to cater LESS to the Japanese. Let them stew a bit and return to the same formula, gamewise not design marketing wise, as the original one. More games from their own studios and using their HUGE backlog in IP's. To make some good sequels. Midtown Madness 4, Crimson Skies 3 (1 on PC 2 on Original Xbox), Letting Rare do their own magic, Let Lionhead do their magic. Ontop of that try making more studios that think of new IP's besides Halo ;).

Microsoft is greedy. To not see it means you are either a fanboy or capitalism has rotten your mind. Of course every company is out there to make money, but some at the same time do care about their customers in the process. "Care" here does not mean care like care for your dog; care, it means they put out good quality products that will last them(customers) for a long time and the products do what they are supposed to do and maybe even more. This way, their customers will be happy and keep coming back.
Try looking at companies like Activision, EA, (and maybe Capcom) then look at Atlus, notice any difference?.
Let me tell you something, I have an old walkman, car audio, fat PS 2, fat PS 3, PSP, all are Sony products and to this day not even once did any of them ever failed me. Get the picture?

I actually agree with you. Don't know why, but I do.

I'm getting a PS3 soon, so I can enjoy all the Sony exclusives.

And you're right about Xbox 360 having a lack of 1st-party games. Halo sold the original Xbox, and it sold the 360 (along with Gears). Call of Duty doesn't count since it's a multiplatform game.

He's not talking about game length. God of War 3 also fills up much more space than the average 360 game, with all of it's uncompressed textures and whatnot. And the 360 could never get MGS4 on a single disk.

Blu-Ray = 25 to 50 GB
DVD = 8 GB or more

DVD is an antiquated technology that isn't suited to HD gaming. If DVD was good enough, then movie companies would be putting HD movies on DVD... But they chose Blu-Ray instead cause it allows for massive amounts of data without much compression.

Japan, gaming wise, is like a very spoiled kid who is a fussy eater. The kid can get a lot of very good toys and food. And only likes a certain type of food that the rest of the world doesn't like as much. It also is highly patriotic to such an extend that it will shun any other food besides it's mommy's home cooking.

Not that that is a bad thing, it just is a fact, MS could as well just give up on the Jap Markett, and make more games like they did on the Original Xbox. The games their own fanbase actually loved. Crimons Skies, Midtown Madness 3, RalliSport Challenge,.. you know the things that made us buy an XBox.

If Japan doesn't want it, then just offer it through webshops and that they can order it from you if they want one (they can then also pay for the shipping costs). Rather then cater to them and get slapped in your face. You made mistakes MS, and Japan will not forgive you for those mistakes. Deal with it and take your losses. Cater to your own fanbase for a change, who are loyal and are craving for the games that where on the original one. Maybe with the addition of the Mistwalker titles, but that isn't a must either.

I have to say that after I sold my PS3 about a year ago I have been tempted to get one. The reasons why I don't are many. I'm tired of being lied to about getting tv screens at home. No cross platform chat which is unforgivable. They are supposed to have better graphics but the multi-platform games almost always look better on 360 (ie. Crysis 2). They take away features like Other OS which I loved and they have limited what you can do with the USB ports. I also don't like any exclusives that much. God of War 3 was a huge disappointment for me and so was Gran Turismo. Resistance 2 had some of the wrorst online of any game I have played on the current generation. That's great that you love PS3 but what are you attempting to do here. Do you really think people are going to read your lies and say hey that guy is right. I should sell my system of choice and get a PS3. Your not going to convince anybody to get anything.

It's clear the Japanese arent interested in the Xbox 360 and its games, and thats totally fine with me. They can stick with their old xenophobic ways. If they dont want to embrace change and the advancement of the industry then that is their loss, not ours.

Meanwhile here in the west the industry is booming and bursting with a ridiculously diverse list of games across all platforms. With new and old studios still making amazing games. The Japanese market isnt of interest anymore, although i admit it could be more interesting if they were on board.

If you look at the profit and revenue data of various game companies, your comment doesn't really hold up. Ubisoft and EA are responsible for some of the biggest budget games in the West, and many of their games lose money. Meanwhile, Nintendo's profits were very large for the same fiscal years.

For example, EA lost $700 million in FY 2010, Ubisoft lost 72 million, while Nintendo gained $1 billion. Take Two gained a mere $42 million I believe.

If you remove EA and Ubisoft from the picture, you're basically just left with Activision for big powerhouse publishers in the West. And nearly all of their profit comes from Call of Duty and World of Warcraft.

The Xbox has done more for the industry this gen than any other console. It has revolutionised online gaming, introduced indie/arcade games to a larger audience, voice chat/friends/messaging, achievements, XBL is the only console version to rival Steam on the PC, it has for the most part brought gaming to the masses in the West. Oh and lets not forget the controller which the majority of gamers admit is the best desgined controller thus far.

You say the Xbox releases a million FPS a year? Yet so far this year PS3 has released the same if not more - Killzone 3 for example.

So grow up you silly asian kid, and WAKE UP. Gaming is changing and denying this isnt helping you or anyone.

This is probably the best comment, i think you hit the nail on the head. There is a large amount of evidence of xenophobia in Japan. People arguing against that and the other reasons listed in your comment seem overly sympathetic and even defensive towards the Japanese (but thats their agenda and their business). Its quite clear the reasons behind the Xbox and its lack of success in Japan, i just find it interesting why poeple are denying them. Maybe its because they are PS3 fans and feel like they have an active interest in the image of the Japanese and its market, which is kinda ironic really, they would never do the same for us over here.

At the end of the day, all I can say is their loss. According to NPD Microsoft sold 277K consoles in July, giving them the highest console sales for 13 out of the last 14 months in the US. In six years, they have sold 1.5 million consoles in Japan. At their current pace, they will sell another 1.5 in the US in 5 months. At this point, if I'm Microsoft, I'll politely pull out of Japan and spend all of that advertising/marketing money that they have been pouring into that country for the last six years, to invest in new IPs, and to lock up exclusivity on other franchises. It is clear that the Japanese aren't interested in the Xbox, so shift the focus, energy, and finances back to those who are.

Console unit sales are not the whole picture though. With the Xbox 360 selling as low as $100 a piece, Microsoft has to sell 3 of those units to match a single $300 PS3 unit. If you have numbers that break down how many of the more expensive 360s are being sold, then that is something to consider.

Congratulations for adding nothing related to either my original comment or the article. The U.S. is the world as far as console sales go, accounting for 3-4x the number of consoles sales compared to Japan in the case of the Wii and PS3. Also accounts for 30x times the amount of 360s sold. Bottom line, I presented facts that claim that the U.S. is definitely more important than Japan in regards to sales. You told me how super awesome your PS3 was. Congrats again.

@ the people who say that ms should consider japan a lost cause i ask :is that how you become a conglomerate and industry titan? ms (and sony and nintendo) have become what they are today by forgoing convention. by making a plan, applying it and sticking with it until they became what they are now.
what if the nintendo progenitors had let the game crash of 83 scare them away from making games?
what if the sony people were too timid to battle sega and nintendo circa 94?
the reasons i can ask these "what ifs" is the same reason ms wants to be in japan. because its a company that seeks profits and expanding success. not one that looks for territories to label as "bad markets".

Let's be honest here, most westerners probably wouldn't buy all the jRPGs and anime-style games that come from Japan. They're not even being ported. How many people here have even heard of Idolmaster? Is that xenophobia? Or just preference?

Japan and Asians as a whole don't like realism/FPS games the way westerners do. The Japanese prefer solo console games, other Asians prefer PC RTS, DOTA, MMOs, etc. That's just how it is.

After a lot of bashing and trash talk, a lot of you are still unable to face facts.

Fact 1: The European and American markets far outweigh the buying power of the Japanese. Microsoft will continue to feed the buying habits of these markets. If you don't like how many shooter games there are, question your friends, not Microsoft.

Fact 2: Playstation and Playstation 2 were amazing consoles because they had the MOST games. Microsoft took this marketing strategy from Sony with the Xbox 360 while Sony focused on teching with the PS3.

Fact 3: Japanese games aren't what they used to be.
