Disappointed that EA's Battlefield 3 won't be sold on Steam? So, it turns out, is Valve's Gabe Newell. He takes a surprisingly responsible stance on the "complicated" issue of EA's absence from his digital distribution service, telling Develop that "we have to show EA it's a smart decision to have EA games on Steam, and we're going to try to show them that."
Newell says there isn't just one thing Valve can to do convince EA that Steam is a good place to sell its games -- instead, it has to "prove we are creating value on an ongoing basis, whether it's to EA or Ubisoft or whoever." Steam has a whole host of good reasons for EA to use it, says Newell, including "happier customers, a higher quality service, and [EA] will make more money if they have their titles on Steam. It's our duty to demonstrate that to them. We don't have a natural right to publish their games."
Newell didn't go into further detail about just how Steam would convince EA to come back, but we hear homemade cupcakes are always a nice option.

@Kibbles XIII Who is the "bad guy" now???? well, guess Valve shouldn´t be worried, when people don´t use Origin then EA won´t have a lot of choices, we need to keep in mind that EA only reason to leave Steam is to take the market away from Steam, that´s something that is not really negotiable....

Having been in the Alpha, I tend to agree with you. I was not impressed with Origin. What I am impressed with is the way BF3 is shaping up in the vids, which leaves me thoroughly torn as they've said that even hard copies of the PC game are going to use Origin!! I've been a fan of DICE and they're games from near the beginning and have played nearly everyone which makes this an even harder choice!

If battlefield 3 goes on Steam, I guess that'll make my year.
I dislike using origin, the messenger never functioned correctly, Punkbuster always made me manually update, Punkbuster also kicked me until I disabled all my running programs (Anti-virus included...),
I have no friends who use origin, so I have to also log on Steam, Windows Live, Skype, Vent, Etc. But if I do, The stupid Punkbuster kicks me.

I learn a lot from the differing approaches of EA and Valve.
EA: "It's Valve's fault that we want to spam everyone who buys our game. It's Valve's fault that we want to shut down online multiplayer for games after the customer has paid us for them. Steam is so restrictive. What are you looking at? Get mad at Valve!"
Valve: "Everybody wins if EA games are available on Steam. We haven't done a good enough job of showing that's the case, so we'll continue to work with EA to see how we can address their concerns."

I've never been a huge fan of steam other than the game deals and easy redownload, and its not hard to see why EA wants off of steam, they can easily support their own distribution, and they dont have to pay commisions to valve for each sale.
I'm buying BF3 regardless, now if only EA went DRM free, then I'd be trying to get origin to overtake steam

Yeah.. EA are likely to go DRM free, and they would definitely care enough about both PCs and the customers to make Origin better than Steam. Give me a break, if you hate Steam enough to actively search for competitors for the hell of it, then it will take the industry a long time to come up with something on even equal par.

@Haggard EA will never go DRM-free.
As much as they try to deny it, they are directly competing with Steam because they didn't like some features of Steam that seemed restrictive to them. They are trying to get other developers interested in releasing on Origin as well, and you can see from a mile away that they aren't going to give their games to customers without DRM, apart from their older stuff on GOG.com.
They seem to have an increasing amount of control over their games, shown in the sequels to great Bioware RPGs such as Dragon Age and Mass Effect. DA2 and ME2 were not nearly as much to do with Role Playing as the originals were. All to do with accessibility.
WHERE IS THE INDUSTRY TRYING TO TAKE ITSELF?!

See, this is difference between Valve and EA (or most of the rest of the "big boys") - instead of giving us the typical PR spin on this, Newel actually seems sincere.
It's really disappointing to see a large publisher like EA, with an already large base on customers, resort to such cheap tactics to get the upper hand on the competition. If you want to win customers you do that by providing a better service with better value, not by sabotaging the competition.

You actually have a great point. All my EA games were tied to my Army email address, and when I got out a year ago, it was shut down. A few weeks ago I went in to play some BF:BC2 after a long break, and forgot my password. I will now never have access again to my Mass Effect games or my Battlefield games.
Yes, I know, I'm an idiot for forgetting my password. Who can blame me when each company requires a different set of requirements? Well, I do, but still.

EA will now say they are leaving Valve/Steam because of a harassing CEO and his demonic visual to destroy a customer's choice to pick a preferred digital platform.
P.S., Origin is mandatory.

Obviously this is EA push to get all of their stuff exclusive to Origin, at least newer games that matter. This is way too much of a coincidence with the timing and which games they pulled. Add on top of that the fact that Star Wars Old Republic and Battlefield 3 will be Origin exclusive...yeah.
EA's answer is pretty bullshit. Last I checked they never had any issues with the way DLC was handled and STEAM is the best thing going for digital distribution.

I believe you are right but that doesn't mean EA isn't either. Even if this is all a scheme because they are lunching their own digital distribution service, I can't blame them either. Why wouldn't they? I own most of not all of my games on Steam and love it, but on the other end, I understand what EA is trying to do. Why give money to valve for distributing their games when they could make more by doing it themselves. If there is one company that can do it, it's EA. Their current portfolio of games is big enough to get people on board.
The funny part is how people cry like babies because they don't want to buy their games on Origin. I get a big "deja vu" episode when Valve launched Half-Life 2 and it was mandatory to install Steam to even play it. Yet the end of the world didn't happen and we are still here today. Hell, people even fell in love with Steam, myself included.
I too would rather have all my games at one place but this is still getting dangerous. Valve, like any company, are there to make money. If there are no competition, then the customers will end up paying for it. It's like when everyone thought Google was God and Microsoft was the even. Now that Google has money, they are applying the same dictatorship business strategy that Microsoft was doing in the 90ies. All companies are greedy and are there to make money.

@jsx92 Last I checked no one cared about whether or not they sale on Steam but making bullshit excuses about why they are pulling their products from a service that shoppers have chosen. In the end it will be EAs problem and Ricotello will have to answer to shareholders about why consumers aren't purchasing these PC copies like they should have.

valve could make me happy with steam if they'd only let me ENLARGE the text of their interface!
it's sooooooooo damn small and light grey on dark grey just makes it worse.
valve must have great benefits for everyone to have such perfect vision on their staff. either that or they're so cheap everyone in their office is still running 800x600 resolution, which i would find near impossible to believe.
c'mon valve, it's 2011, time to let go of your 'perfect layout' in favor of a modicum of usability, please.

People always accuse others of being valve fanboys, well maybe it is justifiable.
Valve has never let me down (except for ep 3) they provide an amazing service, the best deals on games in the world and don't have any anti consumer tactics to force me to buy their game in a certain way,
EA on the other hand have brought up many great devs run them into the ground and now own biowarre who make brilliant games and are forcing people to buy there games in a certain way.
It wouldn't be a monopoly if it was on steam because that would add MORE places to buy it, that's the opposite of a monopoly..
