Awesome, but ridiculous and fourth-wall breaking in a way. It's very self-aware. I will be avoiding this like I avoided Blitzball in FFX. Give me things to kill.

Reminiscent of the pod-racing from Phantom Menace, with the goofball commentators and premise. Little weird to see jedi and sith teaming up for a friendly game of Bombing Run when they're not trying to save/enslave the universe though, heh.

Looks like a spiced up Griffball from Halo. GriffBall is a blast to play so I can only assume that Huttball will be awesome.

Looks like Bioware is more suited to make Facebook games. After the footage from their tacked on "on-rail" shooter portions, and now this, they look like they'd be more suited to make tacked on mini games.

Pass.

@dissectional75 what planet are you on? So Mass Effect 3 is a tacked on mini game? Maybe Dragon Age 2 isn't everyone's cuppa but that's just being contrary and inflamatory.

Oh, Lightsaber baseball is doable, just use a cortosis-weave ball. I'd watch it to see the Sith batter "accidentally" throw his bat at the pitcher.

All I would want in The Old Republic is for them to have Pazaak tables in it. I would spend hours at a Mos Eisley Cantina playing Pazaak games against fellow players betting and winning credits.

That my friends would make the game more awesome than it already is.

I wonder if people actually watched the old star wars movies. I mean, that's what people love - the old movies. This is so phantom menace...

I don't mean to criticize them for doing this goofy game, but the star wars IP has been butchered so horribly since 1999...

@Bijanorama They're attempting to expand the star wars galaxy and storyline.
If you want to hate then hate.. Don't buy this game .. No one is really going to care.
I will for certain pick this game up ..This is the only MMO with monthly fee that actually looks worth it

@ChainSmoker I'm not commenting on the game, I'm commenting on the abuse of the IP. I have no interest in MMOs. I used to be a fan of the star wars universe though.

If you genuinely think this will "add to the galaxy" I'm sorry, you're wrong. This is Star Wars, not Tron.

@Bijanorama So the entire Universe should only be limited to what you witnessed in the films or books?

Yeah, it's a bit more than egotistical to think what you say goes in terms of what the Star Wars universe should be. In the original trilogy, we saw, what, 3 planets? Tatooine, Hoth, and Bespin? No wait, Endor and Yavin (technically moons), so 5. In a galaxy filled with hundreds of millions of planets and species, who knows what else was out there.

Just because it doesn't feel in the same spirit as the original 3 doesn't mean it doesn't belong in the same universe.

@greycobalt So, it seems, the developers of this game have free access to influence the universe in any way they see fit. Star Wars has a huge following, it seems counter productive to do crazy stuff with the franchise. After all, it's a story. Altering and editing the story line seems like abuse of the original IP. I don't think I'm off base when I say that huttball isn't entirely appropriate considering the original story line.

I understand it's lighthearted, I understand it's mini game. But come on. Really? I think it hurts the brand but whatever - it's not my IP. :)

@Clemalum07 No, I just think it should be, realistically, within the same universe. The original movies were so good! This just cheapens the brand.

Look in the background of the bar in Episode 2. You can see tv screens of races and ball games that look in the same spirit as Huttball. And RotJ and TPM established the Hutt species as gangsters who entertain themselves with death-risking sports(arena fights and podraces), so a death-filled ball game fits right in.

Like greycobalt said, if you wanna stick to the movies, TOR would have maybe 5 of its 17 planets tops. It depends on if you allow namedrops and cameos or if they had to be fully in the movies. Ord Mantell was namechecked in "Empire", then there's Coruscant, Alderaan's cameo in ANH and RotS, Tatooine, and Hoth. That's it. 4 planets seen onscreen, a 5th namedropped. That's 12 worlds you wouldn't have. Sure Taris and Korriban were in KotOR, but that's not the movies right? The movies didn't have the Galactic Republic fighting a Sith Empire either, so that's right out.

Point is, sticking to the movies is boring. The EU is much funner. Grand Admiral Thrawn is better than everything in the prequels combined.

I agree!

I tell everyone I know who likes Star Wars, but doesn't want to read any of the EU, to read the Thrawn Trilogy. I might have some reservations about some of the other books, but that trilogy is golden. I really wish they did something with those books. Like an animated movie or something.

Yeah, the Thrawn books were great....if you didn't pay attention at all to Star Wars.

Here's the problem:Thrawn is AN ALIEN. Did you ever see any alien Imperials? No? Just white dudes with accents and dark jackbooted uniforms? Kinda like Nazis? And their stormtroopers, looking like Klan members? Yeah, that was the entire point, the Empire was meant to be a Nazi/fascism parallel. No ALIEN would ever climb rank in the Empire.

Guess if it didn't have splosions and light sabers you weren't paying attention.

That's the point though. It's been mentioned many times that Thrawn's ascendancy up the Imperial military career path was unusual and likely the only instance of a highly ranked "alien" in the Empire. It's likely one reason Thrawn was only secretly made a Grand Admiral.

The minigame looks pretty interesting.

But something I think they should add to their galaxy. In Episode II when Obi-Wan and Anakin were in the bar. On one of the view screens there was a game being played with droids that looked very similar to football. That would be a good spectator sport to bet on, or even make your own team of droids to go against the opposing droids.

Basically. They were Rickshaw droids(technically named RIC-series general labor droids), the same kind used to drive Anakin and Padme around Mos Espa in Episode 2. They were seen on the screen playing Nuna-ball, a controversial game that pisses off the in-universe Animal Rights Groups. Sports involving death? Definitely sounds like something a Hutt would get involved in.

Great idea, will be interesting to see if any competitive leagues spring up around the game, or if Bioware will do that themselves.

While I'm at it, when will Joystiq ever fix their erroneous description of TOR? The Description at Top Right on all TOR article describes the game as having the Galactic Empire as the good guys and the Sith Empire as the bad guys. It's the Galactic Republic as the good guys, not the Galactic Empire. I know the Republic becomes the Empire, but not for another 3500 years after TOR. Please fix it, please? Just replace the word "Empire" with "Republic" in your use of "Galactic Empire".
