@Kiichi but the article also said that they ignored the co-op mechanics...

Instead of synchronized taking out of patrol.. they just... muscled through the map.. and got killed when a bunch of soldiers came to take them out...

You can play metal gear solid like gears of war too.. it just.. wouldnt be what you expect from mgs.. Who knows what kind of coop features or events were in the demo.. sounds like the tester just.. ignored them.

After a while you just ignore the previews on here as most of them come out with a consensus that whatever they are previewing is "subpar".

We all know BF3 is going to be a great game.

As dapoktan said, they ignored the co-op mechanics, as they mentioned themselves. And they were dissapointed by the fact that you have the option to "run through guns blazing". Most FPS games have this option unless your playing ridiculous difficulty, or online lol. Especially Call of Duty, which they conveniently praised its co-op but didn't seem to be bothered by running and gunning in IT.

All the writeups on here are more wishy washy than a washing machine.

That's ok so did Kiichi. They said co-op was fun, but complained that it didn't force you to work together. Sounds like kind of a cop-out to me, it's like they're *trying* to make it sound worse than MW3 even though they had fun playing it.

I may be wrong but is the reviewer maybe being a little "co-op spoiled?" Everything I read says this is traditional co-op its just not the same as mw3's idea of a co-op mission. Biased much.

@gundamxzero when I hear co-op I think more on the lines of Splinter Cell co-op or Portal Co-op. Except in cases like GoW or Halo where it's essentially play through the single player missions with a buddy. Sounds like BF3 is some kind of hybrid. Play through special missions with no additional co-op type features with a buddy.

Would be coop with 31 people. Unless everyone just gets together to see how destructible the environments really are.

It sounds disappointing because this was a terrible preview. Ben admits to going guns blazing and acting alone, you can do that with team death match too, but that would make you that douche bag that helped your team lose. You can't blame the game for not FORCING you to cooperate, it's the fault of the douche bag that refuses to do what they expected to do when you CHOOSE to play online with other people.

Co-op should feel seemless not forced.

@Kimchi Kommando This sounds like the kind of co-op I want. I don't need a special "side" mission. I'm happy with an awesome SP campaign that lets my buddy come and play the same thing with me. If you just play together, I'm sure that one hard part would be a lot easier. Who knows? It sounds great to me and I don't own any of the BF except 1942.

@Alex Trebek I am more than welcome to love any preview I wish. I've read it, and I thought it gave me a bit more information about Battlefield 3. I don't see anything wrong with it. The author of the article may be "ripping" off the game, but I look at it as earning more knowledge on the game's gameplay. Looking forward to Battlefield 3.

Ben: Yeah I don't know, the co-op seems like it could use some work.

Battlefield tards: OMMFG I'm putting up a kickstarter to put out a hit on Ben "I'm a pedophile" Gilbert. In the meantime, I plan on defaming his character through slander and libel, vandalizing his property, and raping any and all of his family members and friends that I can get my hands on. Have you heard that Ben Gilbert once sodomized a puppy? Of course you did, you heard it here. Death to Gilbert!

It sounds like you're saying 'It didn't feel cooperative because I wasn't cooperating'. Just because the game doesn't force you into cooperative play doesn't mean its a bad coop game. In any case I'd far prefer this kind of coop to no coop at all (which is probably the real alternative considering the amount of extra development time that would have to be given to making a dedicated cooperative campaign with cheesy 'you're cooperating now!' sequences).

Come on. Every single one of us knows the difference between a well-designed co-op mode that encourages teamwork, and a poorly designed co-op that feels aimless.

Just because Ben had something critical to say about a game we are excited about, doesn't mean that we all have to pile on with, "I WASN'T THERE BUT YOU MUST HAVE BEEN PLAYING IT WRONG U R DUMB"

Are you serious? It's not that Ben is being constructively critical, it's that he went freaking way to play the game WRONG and the have the nerve to blame the game for not taking his hand and making him play cooperatively, like a mom making a fussy spoil brat eat his veggies.

I welcome constructive insightful critique, but this was not even close. Ben went in like a MW3 fanboy and just started pissing on everything that wasn't exactly like MW3's co-op. The problem is I watched the co-op preview myself and it was awesome. No articifial "save you're buddy" escort crap, just strait up two friends surviving a firefight.

I've noticed that nowadays people hate when games look alike, but they want all games to play the same.... Reading this review, it's like they completely forgot that this is Battlefield, and should be compared by previous Battlefield games and not other franchises if it is going to be compared at all, otherwise it just seems biased.

@MattF Well said - if they didn't get more than half-way through, then they probably weren't cooperating enough or being appropriately tactical. But, as BF3 doesn't spoon-feed the tactics to you, I suspect Ben and co. were just running along playing SP together. If a squad of soldiers is clearing a street together, they are most definitely working cooperatively - sure, if one of them was Rambo then the rest of the squad wouldn't be necessary, but generally they are, and if they weren't all there some of them would end up dead.

Sounds like the previewers need to spend a bit more time playing tactical shooters. Which was the same impression the Joystiq review of SOCOM gave me as well ;). It does sadden me that the mainstream market can't seem to cope with anything other than an arcade blockbuster FPS these days.

The coop will still add a layer of fun even if it is like SP, but with two people. Every holiday season big games come out, but this one feels different. It feels like some all time classics are going to come out, with battlefield 3, Skyrim, uncharted 3, and dark souls I cant freakin hardly wait. Cheers to gaming everyone.

Two things man. Firstly, I happen to love the fact its single player campaign you can opt to play with your wife or brother or whatever. My wife and I finished both gears of war games and my brother and I used to play together of dozens of nintendo games. All this means is if i have a friend that I want to enjoy the game with I can experience the whole game with them. Secondly, The MULTIPLAYER HAS FRICKIN JETS...LIKE REAL FLYING...UP IN THE AIR JETS. That is all

Other than reviving, who really needs any other co-op mechanic? I've seen so many games add a bunch of co-op mechanics that seldom ever get employed when I play the game. Like Army of Two. IMO the only co-op campaigns that feel like they need co-op are when enemies are bullet sponges, are deadly accurate, or do a lot of damage.

I THOUGHT Spec Ops mode was not really full campaign, but just replayable side missions. Forgive me I haven't been keeping up with MW3 as much.

I feel like what they described was your typical co-op. You can't really ever have dependency on each other in any game's co-op, unless it is on high difficulties. Otherwise most dependency is just forced, for example, having to lift your buddy up over a wall, or for instance being the eyes in the sky while your buddy is on the ground. This isn't "natural" dependency, but just the way is forcing you to play.

My feelings are the co-op sounds just fine!

Exactly my thoughts too - COD/MW3 - both have their ups and downs multiplayer and co-operatively, but both are enjoyable in their own right for what they do, and they make you play it.

It appears this one reviewer, is a cod afficianado, and he loves the 'you plant, I defend' mentality to coop.

I will enjoy both, but BF3 is my main online multiplayer shooter - as I have said in previous MW3 news reports on here, its just COD4 with a new skin... again.

Reasons to boycott:
- No modding tools
- No Map Editor
- Not Available on Steam
- Forces you to use Origin (which sucks)
- No innovative gameplay (Same as BF2 but with nicer graphics)
- Price way too expensive for a slightly better engine than Bad Company 2, for half the price you can buy games like Red Orchestra 2 that do everything that BF3 does and does it better.

The fact is I should be happy this game is coming out because there are MORE avenues of purchase. There is only ONE vendor that wont sell it and neither the vendor nor the publisher is being absolutely up front with us about it but on top of Origin I have Direct2Drive, Impulse and any number of other options for purchase. If you really thing Steam is the only thing that can "Save" PC gaming, then the market really is in a sad state.

@R Planteer Competition is welcomed, but what ea wants is not competition. They want their games to be available only on origin. If ea were launching a service like D2D or impulse, it would be competitive and people would be perfectly fine with it. But as it stands, origin gives ea a monopoly on the sale of its pc games.
