I don't want to sound like an ass or anything, but I played a few games on my friend's PS3 and for some reason a lot of them seemed to be low-resolution. Yes, he has HDMI cables and all that. I even asked him after seeing the games.

The point is, I can't bring myself to get a PS3... simply because I have a 55 inch 1080p LCD. I would love to get a PS3 for games like Uncharted and LBP, but are those games output in 1080p? Or even 1080i, I don't care so much if it's 30/60 fps.

I just was squashed by the fact that GTAIV, Resistance, and some Tony Hawk game looked so... low res.

I'm not hating, I just... you know... value the money I earn, I like to spend it on stuff I don't have to be cautious about.

To be honest a lot of the games are 720p. I wish they were in 1080, because of what Sony bragged about at E3 so long ago.

I am by no means a graphics whore though. If a game is fun it's fun and I'll enjoy it.

Chances are his setup was done incorrectly. You had to only have 1080 checked on the PS3 to output it to that on all occasions, otherwise it'll pick and choose. Some games still might bypass though.

Also, few games on consoles are true to their resolution in rendering. They're simply upscaled to 1080p. So... yeah you're the first person I've seen make this specific and weird complaint.

Uncharted 2 and 3 will not run 1080p native. There are BARELY any 1080 (native) titles at all.

I know what you mean. Every time I turn on my PS3 and start playing some games it takes a good while for me to get use to the low resolution.

I game mostly on PC and I'm always playing at 1920 x 1080 or higher, and it looks super clear.

95% of console games are rendered in 720p or in SubHD (much lower than 720p). The few 1080p games are pretty much arcade games.

and with a large screen, it really sucks.

I don't think it's a weird complaint. Why the hell would I want to have to select and deselect and this that and the other on a PS3 just to play in a higher res? It should automatically select the highest resolution.

My point is, I already have an Xbox 360 and from what I could see (basically comparing GTAIV) the resolution seemed quite low.

I'm just sort of a maximizer, if you will. I won't get a PS3 simply because the damned thing is supposed to be all high res, yet some games are downright blurry.

You should bring your xbox over to your friend's house (or his ps3 to yours) to do a true comparison. I had a crappy tv before and it really had a poor display. I didn't notice it because it was what I was used to.

There aren't any retail titles that run in 1080p on the PS3. On the 360 however there are maybe 10-ish but nearly all of those 10 are god awful with the exception of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1. PSN and XBLA titles however have a few that are native in 1080p.

I guess nobody here can tell you what's up with the difference between the 360 and PS3's resolutions. That or they just don't want to tell you.

The PS3 outputs exactly what it renders (most of the time). The vast, vast majority of retail games this generation render at 720p, so that's what the PS3 output and leaves it up to the TV itself to upscale it to 1080p if that's its native res.

The 360, on the other hand, does the upscaling itself. It doesn't mean that the 360 displays at 1080p natively, that's just the resolution it feeds to the TV after having upscaled the image itself.

Whether the PS3 or 360 looks better is entirely up to the TV. Needless to say, if you have a lower-quality TV that doesn't do upscaling very well the PS3 will look "worse", but if your TV is good at upscaling it can match or even surpass the 360's upscaling abilities. Practically no retail games output at 1080p (with just a few exceptions) regardless of whether they're on the 360 or not. Image quality depends entirely on how good your TV is at upscaling and how good each platform's version is (e.g., whether the 360 version of GTAIV is just better looking than the PS3 version).

To be perfectly honest I don't find anything wrong with my PS3 display on my TV. Sometimes it can actually look better than when I play my 360, but I don't own any games for both systems so I wouldn't be able to make a side-by-side comparison. And even then if you get one of those games where one of the two gets a terrible port it doesn't mean it's the console display's fault.

@PointlessPuppies

The majority of people who buy HD TV's will buy the more affordable types, leaving the super high end TV's to those with a lot of disposable income or a great degree of technophilia.

If you're ever tried to hook a PC up to a bog standard HD flatscreen, you'll see how crappy it looks compared to if it was connected to a monitor. I'm not sure why this is, but it's something I've seen quite often - all my friends are nerds like me, plus I've tried connecting my PC up to a few HD TV's just for convenience (Just so I don't have to set up to sets of screens in my bedroom), and been dissapointed every time.

Given the lack or decent resolution that the TV itself outputs, I'm not sure how super important the difference between 720p and 1080p is anyway, particularly if the screen size is below 40"

@Enosoma GTA 4 runs at 1920 x 1200 on my PC, and with all sorts of added tweaks to make it look better, and play better.

You really should be a PC gamer if you want the absolute best overall experience possible. It requires a bit of tech know-how, but you learn a lot along the way, and any problem you face can be overcome (with varying degrees of technical difficulty).

@Anticrawl You're wrong.

The first ever native 1080p console game was Ridge Racer 7 and it also ran at 60fps, released in Nov 2006 (the first ever 360 game renedered natively at 1920x1080 was NBA Street Homecourt released in February 2007. It was also 1080p on the PS3). There are also well over 60 titles (both retail and PSN) that run natively at 1920x1080 on the PS3 (not including WipEout HD as that runs with a variable resolution - increments between 1280x1080 and 1920x1080 - to maintain 60fps).

A lot of XBLA titles that have been ported to the PSN came with a native reoslution boost. Titles like Lumines, Braid, Geon and many more were all native 720p on the 360 but arrived on the PS3 as native 1080p titles.

I already read books. As for giving to Africa, UNICEF has been begging for my spare change since as long as I can remember. And yet the situation is the same as it was 30 years ago. Throwing money and food at the poor is not a solution. That money should go towards making them self-sufficient or relocating them somewhere where they can be.

You know what, let's not spend any money on anything. Cars? Just walk everywhere! Houses? Find a nice cave to live in! Clothes? You don't need them in a cave because it's dark! Food? Plant a garden and hunt off the land! But if we find any money or anything of value we'll be sure to just give it all away. Yeah that sounds lovely.

What you're referring to is caused by pixel density. A 55" 1080p display will always look worse than a 22" 1080p display due to the pixels per inch. There's nothing you can do about it except get used to it.
