After its abrupt cancellation last year, Penny Arcade Adventures: Episode 3 has risen from the ashes with developer Zeboyd Games taking control of the project. The studio is best known for its Xbox Live Indie Games and PC releases, Cthulhu Saves the World and Breath of Death 7.
RPGamer reports that, given the retro nature of Zeboyd's titles, Penny Arcade Episode 3 will take on a similar graphical style (think: the 16-bit Final Fantasy games); Alex Mauer will be providing the soundtrack. This marks the first game in the series not developed by Hothead, which left the project last year and went on to develop DeathSpank.
Episode 3 is set to be released in 2012 on "as many systems" as possible. More information will be revealed at PAX East next year ... but that won't stop us from harassing Gabe and Tycho for information all weekend.

Between this and Torchlight 2, today is proving to be well above average

Maybe I'll finally get off my rear and play the first two. I bought them in a cheap bundle but never had the time to play. I'll likely play them right before the third releases.

@Nobledevil Gaming Optimist Exactly how cheap was the bundle you purchased because i bought them as a bundle for like $4.00 and the last time I checked they were still $15.00 each I couldn't pass it up as i thought it was an error from the PS store.

I purchased them on PSN that same week. I believe it was $3 for both of them. Only played through the first one so far, well worth my $1.50

Why does everything with "Episode 3" in the title tend to fall into oblivion?

Ah, the series could only be improved by this direction. 16-bit for life!

I'm not so sure. The main attraction of the first two games was that you were basically playing a Penny Arcade strip that looked and sounded like a Penny Arcade strip.
Without that novelty it's just an adventure game with familiar characters.

After playing the first two games recently (got them during the dirt cheap $2.50 price)... I don't know how to feel about this.
I loved the fact that my character LOOKED like a Penny Arcade character in and out of the games cutscenes, I loved the continuity between the two, and god-dang I loved my light-rake weapon...
But it sounds like this will drop all of that. I mean, how will they know I grabbed those secret items and what my characters look like? Will it continue with the how the first games were connected?
And as much as I loved Zeboyd's games, the gameplay itself was rather... simple...
As much as I've been wanting a 3rd game, I just can't tell if I really want it like this... At least until I see some screenshots and the like.

I never did read the plot of what the 3rd game would have been. Perhaps I'll simply play it instead.

I stared at the header image waiting for it to fully load.
Then I realized it was emulating pixels.

I think I might be the only person in the world that did not enjoy the Penny Arcade games.

Ehhh, not sure how to feel about this. I was excited to hear the third episode was back on up until I read it was going to be, well... different.
Great as I'm sure Zeboyd's work is, it's just not to my taste. I'd rather have a third episode that feels like the previous two (which were very similar to each other) than changing it at number three. To make a drastic example, it'd be like, say, Gears of War going side-scroller for the third game. It might as well be a separate thing.
