Dead Rising 2: Off the Record showing off Sandbox Mode at PAX

As if all the weird stuff we already knew about in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record wasn't enough, Capcom has even more to reveal at PAX this weekend. The company is showing off the game's Sandbox mode, which will let players run around Fortune City and cause as much mayhem as wanted "without having to worry about the clock."

The mode also offers a series of challenges in each of the game's environments (ranging from simple collection to killing zombies or driving around in vehicles) that will offer up cash as a reward. We've got a couple of Joystiq folks on the show floor at PAX, so stay tuned for a hands-on report about the mode itself.

Photojournalist and original hero of Dead Rising's Willamette incident, Frank West, takes center stage once again in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. Forget what you know about Dead Rising 2, as players will experience a reimagining of the Fortune City outbreak.

The new "Off the Record" storyline means an all new Dead Rising 2 experience. Frank will face off against more twisted enemies, build more outrageous combo weapons, follow his own unique mission structure and explore brand new areas of Fortune City to get his biggest scoop yet. Join Frank as he indulges in the insanity of "Uranus Zone", Fortune City's very own theme park. Full of deadly rides and crazy attractions, the sci-fi themed Uranus Zone is a true zombie-killing paradise.

Fans have asked for it, and now Dead Rising 2: Off the Record delivers a fully realized Sandbox Mode! Available from the outset and supporting both single and co-op modes, players can now explore all Fortune City has to offer without having to worry about the clock. In addition, Sandbox Mode offers a selection of gruesome and unique challenges such as 'Rumble in the Jungle', 'Chop Suey' and 'Silver Strip Smackdown,' all with online leaderboard support.

Frank's comeback also means the return of his trusty camera, with players able to earn Prestige Points (PP) for specific photo opportunities that are graded against criteria such as horror, drama, erotica and brutality. In addition to the new scenario, Sandbox Mode and gameplay enhancements, Dead Rising 2: Off The Record offers a suite of technical updates including load time optimizations, improved network performance and a host of system upgrades to deliver a more satisfying Dead Rising experience.

Dead Rising 2: Off The Record hits stores on October 11th for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

I'm not sure why people are so bothered about a sandbox mode. Both DR and DR 2 had time limits, but they also let you carry on when you failed the first mission, essentially turning it into a sandbox mode.
Off the Record doesn't appeal to me tbh loved the first 2, and if this was DR3 then I'd be all over it, even with the new features this is still just DR2 with a new playable character

@jimbo8e6 Failing the mission before certain case files would leave some areas of the mall inaccessible. But yeah, I bet a lot of people didn't realize you could continue the game after failing a mission.

I was a fan of the first and second, but they said it themselves, "What would Fortune CIty be like with Frank?" uhhhh it would be fortune city again... nothing special, just a reskin of the main character and you got yourself a cash cow.

Frank worked out to have a whole a load of moves in case west so it seems they picked up on that and expanded. Looking pretty good so far to me

Following the COD formula might work for DR too. Just give it a chance, the same game with the same name just a different number in the title has paid off in the past.

Seems like i was reading something about Frank needing to eat and drink in ths mode or he will start loosing health.

Suddenly, I'm interested in the game. I skipped DR2 because having to worry about the clock killed the fun for me in the original DR. I wanted to take my sweet time looking around, experimenting, and finding fun new ways to kill zombies, but I was always nervous I'd miss a deadline.

@CAG Danimal this. i hated how you were restricted to a clock.

@CAG Danimal The same. Stupid clock on DR2 made me run around the whole place without enjoying the game at all. Of course, running around from area to area meant I had to suck on those huge load times every ten or so seconds as well... hope they've worked on that.

@CAG Danimal I'm sure you have heard it a million times, but the clock/deadline was really artificial. You could ignore it, go do whatever you want for a while, and then start over with a buffed up player and worry about the story/timers. Once I understood that aspect of it DR2 was a lot more interesting.

Is this just dlc or a whole new game?

It's not a true sandbox mode if you still have slowly dwindling health and need to eat to stay alive. Once again, Capcom fails.

@A Burger do you have even the slightest bit of proof of this? Not only does the press release say nothing about decreasing health, but the gameplay footage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LT_hvNsoepA) confirms it doesn't exist.

Remember that this is 10 years after the first game, being in a zombie apocalypse would age anyone badly... Besides thats just artwork and he doesnt look like that in the game... He also turned to the drink and let himself go. Lots of drinking plus killing 50K zombies you wouldnt be a pretty person after! :)

I loved DR2 and i will be picking this up, a new Story + Areas + Combo cards + Co-op challenges = Yes please! Everyone is just trying to take a pop at Capcom here... Yeah they do milk DLC but i feel the content on this is justified for a retail release.

Dead Island is going to be way better the any dead rising game that was or ever will be

My son and I went to PAX, and I had never really taken notice of Dead Rising although my son has played it 100's of times. But he entered the zombie killing contest they held at PAX and after watching I can't wait for dead rising 2 to come out.

He came in 2nd place with 485 kills within 5mins. Kind of cool how you can mate the chainsaw with the motorcycle.
