Cutting out the original multiplayer killed this release for me...

I literally just wanted an HD version of the original game...

@Timjoy Yeah, playing the original multiplayer on Live would have been the only reason for me to purchase this, and I own every previous Halo game. I'll just wait for Halo 4.

Play the classic game mode in Reach, its all the old maps, modified health/shields to make it like the CE, and no armor abilities. It's quite fun.

@Timjoy They sorta couldn't. The original release didn't have much of, if at all, a netcode. 343 didn't want to split the community any more, since Reach is only a year old. The new update for Reach is going to bring it close enough as possible to CE, anyway; we're getting a 3-shot kill Pistol, again.

Agreed, it really is a dealbreaker. Halo is one of my favorite games of all time, and I feel like the new guys in charge just missed the point completely :(

The original xbox lan parties shall survive another 10 years.

The lack of original multiplayer "killed" this release for you?

I don't know about you guys, but I can't wait to get my hands on the brand new skin for the campaign, new achievements, terminals, the title updated multiplayer settings for Reach along with the 7 beautifully recreated maps... And all at $20 less than the normal $60 Xbox game price?

Although I was disappointed when they announced no CE multiplayer, all the news about the update and everything else they've said sure has me thinking that the lack of "original multiplayer" didn't KILL this release.

"343 didn't want to split the community any more, since Reach is only a year old."

So why, then, did they release this a year later? Obviously, this was a Microsoft decision, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to gimp one game because the release date *had* to be this year. I sense why Bungie left considering the position Microsoft put 343 in on this one.

EVERYONE IN THIS REPLY CHAIN NEEDS TO DO THEIR RESEARCH:

THE ORIGINAL GAME MODE IS STILL THERE! It will be in a playlist section in Reach Matchmaking, so you get:

'Competitive'
'Cooperative'
'Classic'

And it that 'Classic' you'll get the Halo CE experience, in playlists like 'Objective' and 'Slayer'. Do you guys see where I'm going? Sure, you might get the DMR in one of these games, but I'm thinking they'll use the original weaponset, because THEY'RE BRINGING THE HALO CE PISTOL BACK. And every other gun in Halo 1 is in Reach too.

I fear for 343. They've done an awesome job here, and so many people don't understand what the game even has. If I were in charge I would promote that more.

When I think Halo multyplayer, i think PC only, which was, btw, a freaking blast; outside of that, I completely agree. I can't wait for that initial storming of the Pillar of Autumn, by the Covenant, and the subsequent fight to the Halo Ring. I hold that sequence in the highest of regard. However, as far as FPS.s go, 10/4/11 has all of my attention. After that, then Halo!

They *HAD* to release it this year because it's being re-released to celebrate Halo combat evolved 10th anniversary.
Releasing it any other year just wouldn't make sense..

You can play the original game in HD right now!
Step 1: Get a copy of the original game.
Step 2: Put it in your 360.
Step 3: Press play!

It's that simple!

This is only true if you use the 10th Anniversary as a pretext. They didn't have to do that. Regardless, my point still stands.

There has never been a HD Halo fps on consoles.
Reach,ODST and 3 are all sub-hd.

The only HD Halo game is Halo 1 PC version and Halo Wars.

@SamuraisShadow

YOU need to do some research.

It is a game mode to emulate the classic game, but it's done in the Reach engine. I want THE ORIGINAL HALO CE ENGINE FOR MULTIPLAYER OVER LIVE.

What I'm asking for is extremely simple. Microsoft has confirmed it repeatedly that they're not doing it.

http://www.qj.net/xbox-360/news/halo-combat-evolved-anniversary-multiplayer-explained.html

Frank O' Connor was put to task, starting out their explanation with the fact that "the most significant change was the multiplayer component."

"We had to do this in a fairly compressed time schedule. And we looked at the original Halo multiplayer engine, it wasn't built to do anything except system link and making the engine work across Xbox Live. It would have been possible but it would have been a massive undertaking."

Do me a favor, don't tell me I need to do some research before you do your own. I know exactly what you're going to get, and it sounds like a neat mod for Reach - the old weapons and maps, IN THE REACH ENGINE. I UNDERSTAND. THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANT.

Thank you, now stop incorrectly "correcting" me.

It's the way many franchised series end up evoking: With an introduction to something new, you lose sonethibg old. Gain something, lose another.

Take Assassin's Creed, for example. In terms of gameplay, was AC2 better than 1? Sure. But some of the qualities of the first, like the tone and a few other aspects, were evaded in the sequel. One of the reasons why continuing a universe is sometimes tremendously difficult.

Was never much into the pistol.. I liked the AR, even in other games I aim high on the torso, head-shots were accidental.. Halo 2 killed sniping sections since it dodged reticules a lot of the time.. glad they didn't slap in multiplayer, I can rarely be bothered with that stuff, and when I do I'm bored in 20minutes

There's a quote from Halo 2 that comes to mind;

Cortanna
"You know, I think the Forerunners built these new structures around the old, to protect them, to honor them. Pure speculation, mind you. I'd need to make a thorough survey to be sure."

Too bad the new graphics add a little choppiness… the glossy smooth frame rate was one (of many) things that made Halo 1 such a joy to play.

I'm torn over getting this - I really enjoyed the original (and really didn't any of the sequels) but after probably hundreds of hours spent fiddling around all the maps, trying to survive crazy high drops, and peaking into all the corners of the map, I'm not sure I have an incentive to go back. Good classic game play and a good story I've already played don't get that much more compelling with HD graphics :/

Did we play the same game?

It was extremely easy to bog down the original Halo engine.

I never had the opportunity to touch an Xbox until just last year, so I haven't had the opportunity to see where the Halo series began (nor have I played any Halo title since getting a 360). When I heard they had given the original a spiffy HD redesign I got excited, and I am looking forward to checking out the game.

The original engine doesn't have support for online multiplayer.

They've repeatable stated they didn't want to change anything from the original engine so they created maps and associated modes in Reach to give as close a feel to CE as they could.

Reach has plenty of modes without armour abilities.

Their recreating the maps for Reach and making changes to support the armour abilities, but also doing a classic mode which is well classic.

I missed the simplicity of CS 1.6. Forget killstreak rewards, forget perks, and forget complex stats, I just want that feeling of going into a corridor with my mp5, and trying to head shot my opponent before he kills me. If I survive, hopefully, I will have enough hp left to make another kill.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Mind you I liked the sequels, but you have summed up the difference between Halo: CE and EVERY OTHER HALO EVER RELEASED in the most succinct was possible.

Kudos!
